not all CR agencies - use legal transcription companies

Posted: Jul 23rd, 2024 - 11:29 am In Reply to: Some court reporters work for court reporting agencies - and not all

There are agencies that leave it solely up to the CR to produce the transcript themselves and don't utilize LT companies. If the CR wants to seek out their own scopist or proofreader or typist or whatever, that's up to them to find them and pay them.

There are plenty of decent agencies out there who expect the job to be done right and don't settle for these shenanigans no matter who they allow to put hands on transcript production.

These agencies that farm out poor quality CR work to legal trans companies are just in a linear line of crap, crappy CR's, crappy agency, etc., but I still put some onus on the LT companies too.

There is no way an agency is unaware of a CR producing poor notes. It's common practice for the CR to turn in their raw steno notes to the agency, those have to be stored and kept on file for X number of years, varies by state.

Again, these agencies may be accepting poor work from a CR school dropout just to be acting as a warm body tapping on a writer in a depo when their main job is just to get the audio.

Also in states where you don't have to be certified to work, some agencies are desperate enough to hire students who haven't reached the speed level yet to be able to take down a depo.

Getting through CR school and getting certified is a horrendous, hard grind. I can't image there are hordes of certified CRs out there who would be willing to piss away their cert by doing that poor quality work. They could get their cert yanked for that, it is a violation of their code of ethics.
