Agree with your comment - about needing a credit card

My friend went to get her routine lab work done at her usual lab used by her insurance. They immediately asked for a credit card, even though she preferred to be billed later. She refuses to go back there now.

Are people just failing to pay their medical bills? I know the economy really isn't as great as it's made out to be, but when a person already has a payment system in place, i.e., medical insurance, what's the deal? Why require a credit card number when they will get their payment once the claim is processed. I understand this requirement for people whose only option is to pay with cash or credit, but otherwise it seems like they're just unwilling to wait for payment through the proper channels, no matter what.
