labeled as "typists." It takes much more than a "typing monkey" to do true medical transcription. Verbatim transcription undermines our profession and only helps perpetuate the misconception that it is the transcriptionists who are largely responsible for all of the healthcare documentation errors rather than the ones doing the dictation. The fact is, medical transcriptionists correct way more errors than they make, by my estimation easily dozens to one. However, when typed verbatim it becomes possible for those doing the dictation to, within their inner circles, proclaim to themselves and each other that the crap that came back in the transcription was done by the error-prone typists and not really reflective of what was actually dictated. It plays right into the hands of those making all the dictation errors as they compromise the integrity of the healthcare document and jeopardize patient safety while at the same time envisioning a time when medical transcriptionists will no longer be necessary.
