OK - my turn now - just got "terminated"..... - sm

Posted: Mar 07, 2013

"production" of course - been roaming around the whole countryside - midwest and northeast - all the different demands and doctor idiosyncrasies to look up before I can even type a ditsy little unintelligible report.  Now what does one my age do??  Not exactly front office material - all MTSOs being the same any more - what's left?

Oh no... I am so sorry - that is just horrible

[ In Reply To ..]
How come some people state they demanded a single account and got it, and others of us have to jump all over the place, through no fault of our own, and then like you (and again I am sorry) get fired.

Please, go file for unemployment and if they fight it, fight back. This whole thing of having to jump from account to account was put into place after our line requirements were established, which of course, is going to change the line counts when you have to spend so much time reading the client profiles and such. I think you could very easily fight this and win once you prove what is all entailed in being moved from account to account.

Terminated...OP.. - sm

Thanks for the reply - need something to kick start me - was thinking UE but don't have all the stuff printed out (and my printer is broken anyway)that I need to back up my situation like people on here have said to do. At 71 nobody is going to jump on the chance to hire me, even with 40+ years of experience. Yes I will fight. Thank you again for the reply.

Im sorry for your situation. If you are 71, can you retire? - In a way, being older kind of works in

[ In Reply To ..]
your favor, especially since you were let go for production. This job has become more and more demanding and the older you get, the more difficult that becomes on a person physically and mentally. I commend you for sticking it out this long. Im sure things will work out for the best.
I should add - sm..
[ In Reply To ..]
one of the things I meant about age working in your favor is that there is a lot of jobs that you may not be able to do any longer and I dont know if you have any health problems or disabilities, but you may qualify for disability if you do. There is one you can apply for that takes into consideration the number of years you have worked etc. I dont know all the details, but I have a family member going through the process right now. Its definitly something to think about and by all means file for unemployment benefits. You most certainly are eligible.
Wow - you're practically insinuating that if we're older, - we need to be put out to pasture. :(
[ In Reply To ..]
If an older worker has been an MT for a long time, then chances are they don't have much retirement savings, if any. And we all know you can't live on Soc.Security alone.
I didn't get that at all. - nm

nm
That's sure how it sounded to me! Assuming we're - to slow & infirm to do the work!
[ In Reply To ..]
This is exactly what the poster said - No insult
[ In Reply To ..]
"a lot of jobs that you may not be able to do any longer"

Since when does "a lot" equal "can't do MT because you're old and infirm?"

Geez.. she's just trying to give some suggestions to people. Maybe someone out there would qualify for disability some way--you don't know that, just because it doesn't apply to you. Not everyone's situation is the same.
I got from that reply that it is better that she is - 71 as opposed to 61 SM
[ In Reply To ..]
and qualifies for SS. Nothing about insulting older workers.
there are lots of jobs I can't do... - fgs
[ In Reply To ..]
That doesn't mean I qualify for disability.
terminated....OP - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Mentally - pretty sharp! not a problem keeping up with their various silly machinery buttons - mostly think it was being too attentive to details and making sure everything was correct according to their wants - does slow one down - doesn't it? I get a little SS check, but not enough to live on. The job was filling in the gap. Thanks for the thought, tho.
Terminated - outahere
[ In Reply To ..]
Sure she can collect SS, but that isn't enough to survive on alone.
Hope you are on retirement - me
[ In Reply To ..]
I can't wait to turn 62 so I can get on SS and work part time. I can make up to 15,000 plus collect my retirement. But by then the death panels will deem me useless because I have a cig now and then and can't walk more than a block.
Dr. Alvarez said its a government funded study called a mortality test.
Are we supposed to just take it or fight it?

about unemployment... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
you don't need to have anything printed out. All you have to do is go to the UE office and file. If you have earned enough wages in the qualifying period (usually the last 5 quarters, excluding the one we're currently in) you qualify for unemployment.

Don't worry about the terminology of being "terminated" vs "laid off". Please don't worry about having to "fight" anything. Unless you have engaged in harmful activities against your employer, you will most certainly qualify, and the employer cannot obstruct that. I feel for you, and I wish you good luck. Please don't hesitate to seek unemployment.
Unemployment - just here for now
[ In Reply To ..]
I applied for unemployment and it is right on line. Did not have to have any paperwork at all just the info on income you made in the year that they request on line and place of employment. You actually draw your pay right on line also when it is ready for direct deposit they will give you the date.
Is UE based on how many years you've paid into - the system, or on how much you - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
made this past year or so? Because if it's the latter, then even if UE paid twice what I make as an MT, I still couldn't live on it, because my MT job pays less than min. wage.

and maybe they will help you find a job - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know, have not yet had to file for unemployment, but maybe they will help you with training or placement. I am so sorry this happened to you. Some people may say otherwise, but MModal is looking to get rid of all of us.

Terminated - MTME

[ In Reply To ..]
Try Cardus. They are looking to hire and even though they aren't the best, they are better than M*M and perhaps can put you on right away. Good luck!

Thank you !.....OP - nm

same thing with me - new but old

[ In Reply To ..]
Same thing happened to me with Medquist last year. They had me on so many accounts, I would constantly bounce around all day from one to the other and as a result my LPH was never what it should have been and they fired me with absolutely no notice. Just got a phone call one day saying that my production was too low. I wallowed in self pity for awhile and anger but then realized that I could still be beneficial to someone (I am 56 and have done this for over 12 years) and I applied at Nuance and got hired there. I know there is a lot of bad stuff written about them on this board, but really no more than Medquist and if you just need something to tide you over like you said, I encourage you to take their test. You don't have to tell them you were fired or anything - just say you work or worked for Medquist. They never checked anything of mine and they seriously love taking people from Medquist. The test is not that hard at all and the only thing that takes awhile is going through all their online training (which is just sitting in front of the computer and watching some power point presentations). Don't give up.
Being old myself, how do you take online test? - Another laid off MT from below.

I just got terminated 2/25 from M*M too after 12 years there (started with Total EMed but through all the name changes, etc. ended up with now nothing). I am not sure where to go either.

Unemployment office and Nuance. Same boat. - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
They just do it over phone. Unreal. My TSM suggested I call HR rep, which I did 3 times today, but after seeing these other posts, it's a done deal. No wonder HR rep didn't answer phone! LOL.
Maybe they're letting older MTs go, gearing up to - buy out yet another company.
[ In Reply To ..]
Who knows - it might even be my company they're going to buy. Lately things at my job have been very strange, and my gut feeling is they're just about to sell out to M*M or Nuance.

Then again, maybe they're just in the market for a few hundred more Indians.

terminated last year from Mm - new but old

[ In Reply To ..]
I was terminated last year from Medquist for low line count with no warning. Had so many different accounts and was constantly being switched in the same day from one to the other, etc. I took a few months off and then realized I had to do something and I went online with Nuance and applied with them which involved taking an online test of transcription and multiple choice questions. Passed and was hired. They love hiring Medquist employees. I enjoy working for them. I have a great team leader. Am not bounced between accounts but do have several accounts I can turn to if needed to because of low work but so far have never had to. Definitely give it a shot

Me too. Is this Black Thursday or something? - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
I find it odd that most of these terminations are with those who are close to retiring. Seems fishy and underhanded, and not surprising with this company.

I think some agencies out there, and some lawyers too, would have a field day with this if it proved to be on a fairly large enough scale.

I wish you all the best. I am sure there will be something out there much better then here...and every single on of you deserve whatever it may be. Good luck!

Either way it is still not right that the majority of people being let go seem to be at retirement age. All I was saying was that who knows the larger scope of this outside of these boards, but if this is becoming quite common then something is very off.

The oldest MTs usually have the most skill, and we - have the most resentment for - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
what this career has been reduced to. We know we're being scammed. We know AHDI and all its stupid little rules are a farce. If we've been with the same company for a long time, we may be at a higher pay scale than they want to pay anymore. Or, we may have worked a long time for another company, at a higher pay scale, and then were bought out.

If your company offers health insurance, I believe very strongly that these insurance companies are pressuring them incessantly to get rid of their older workers (those who might be more expensive for the insurance companies, whose CEOs have payments to make on those second homes in Aspen and those shiny new BMW's.) I'm pretty sure that employers get deals and perks from the ins. companies if they can weed out the more mature workers.

If the MTSO has been trying to get American MTs to quit (so they can hire more Indians!), they're probably also finding that we older MTs are a lot tougher and more tenacious when it comes to gritting our teeth and sticking with the job. Normally those would be considered "good" qualities, but not if it happens to be an American who has them.

So, dear people, we are all being doubly discriminated against. Once for being "older", and once again for being American.
I wish every one of you that were fired would - email eachother and
[ In Reply To ..]
compare notes. Compare how many lines you all did from your stat sheets, compare you ages, compare if you had a warning or not, compare your line rates, and see if there is really something to call an employment attorney over.

I know that this is an "at-will" employment, but there is also something called "discrimination" and something called "unlawful termination," and if for nothing else, I would love to see you all throw a brick through this glass house!
Terminated.... OP - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Just a little extra note - I remember when I was maybe 61 and working in a hospital and reading Mary M's forum somebody mentioned that their hospital had just hired an MT who was 82. So there is hope - ya think??

Sure I've worked a long time in Med. Rec and I can code, do "chart analysis" and all that stuff - it was just part of the job - so I guess us old ones have a lot more knowledge and ability than they want to give us credit for.

Yup - looks like there's still hope. You all sure have pulled me up out of my hole and thanks again, again and again!
But how long ago was that? Was it back when MTs - were in demand, and most worked - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
in house? "Back in the day", my hospital used to hire older MTs, too.

But look at just the last 5-7 years. Big shakeups, big mergers, big push to offshore. The hospital I used to work for held out longer than most, but 3 years ago closed its transcription department and made all the docs start hunting and pecking on their new EMR, instead.

I've applied at a ton of jobs in the last 4 years, with a few live interviews. This is both in and out of the transcription field. Even for those jobs where my MT experience and skills are just what they need, and everything is all hunky-dory over the phone, the minute we meet in person, I can sense an immediate change in the interviewer's vibe. They've written me off before ever even interviewing me. I dress impeccably for the interview, I'm in excellent health, I don't have gray hair, and I can hide about 15 years of my age, but still can't pass for the 20-39-year age group they seem to want.

And that's just for the jobs where I wasn't asked my birthdate or SS# on the application. Once they get hold of my birthdate, I never even get a response.
we're part of the "invisible generation"..........sm - terminated OP

You are SO right !! - big time discrimination against age now. Yes that was at a time when everybody was bragging about how much they could make working at home. Sure wish I knew what the answers are - but everybody in this country is in bad shape as far as finding a decent paying job is concerned and it gets worse daily.
I agree you hit something on the benefits but - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Your looking at it wrong..Age has nothing to do with insurability through company policies, after all you could be 60 and paying the same rate as a 20 year old who is likely to get pregnant..What your missing is Obamacare..The job industry ALL over the place (low paying jobs like ours) cannot afford to keep health insurance on all their people, especically in our case where production matters..At some point when they are overhired, then the full timers are gonna get the ax because its not mandatory to pay part timers insurance under the current regime..It is also cheaper with all the regulations put in place to send work out of the country..So lets place blame where blame is due, on the government..A business has one goal and one goal only, to make money And if they make more sending it overseas and utilizing part timers and not paying bennies, well then that is what they have to do...Its pretty simple..Your blaming the wrong entity here people..I live by the if it doesnt make sense it isnt true..Very simply what on earth would make an originally American owned company send OUR work overseas?? Money and over regulation by the government...
Save the "Obamacare" debate for the politics board. - What Im talking about is employers - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
in just about every field in this country blowing off older workers in favor of younger ones. Insurance isn't the only reason, but I think it's a big one.

And if that's the case, one would think that workers old enough to get Medicare, instead of employer-paid healthcare, would be a much-sought-after commodity in the workplace. But I haven't see that happening, either.
Its not a political debate it is a fact - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
There is nothing to debate, read the papers and see what companies are doing..There is a reason it is being done and we will suffer..
