I managed to hang onto a direct-employee remote position for many years; that position ended recently.
I knew the day would come--I've been outsourced from more than one facility in the past--but I decided to hang in as long as the job was there, and it lasted far longer than I ever thought it would.
From time to time I'd think I should start preparing for the inevitable but had no clue which way to go, with outsourcing impacting so many industries and my having no interest in going back to different types of work I used to do. So I just kept going and appreciated my situation--right up until the ax fell.
I've checked in here over the years and so many posts continued to confirm what my gut was telling me--that once I lost my job, it would be time to move on from transcription.
Whatever else I do will probably be for less money, but I think given continuing trends I'd be better off supplementing my income with something other than an agency-based MT position--and to my knowledge direct-employee MT jobs are almost nonexistent, and always come with the possibility of outsourcing at any time.
I doubt I'll find another line of work that suits me as well, and I am so sorry to see it go. It's a shame, how this specialty has been devalued to the point of no return.
Best of luck to everybody.
