Credit report and coding jobs - wanttocode

Posted: Jul 05, 2013

I have to file bankruptcy in the next month or so. There's no way around that. I am also going to be starting a coding program. A lot of coding employers do a credit check.  I guess I'll finish coding school in a year or so, so by that time, after building back up my credit, will the bankruptcy not matter so much to future employers?

What I think - Wondering

Bankruptcy probably matters to all employers. It probably matters in coding because of the financial nature of the job. How can you afford coding school when you are filing for bankruptcy?

Agree, and also want to point out . .. - sm

(Just realized that this got attached to the wrong post. It is a response to the OP.)

I agree with the above that credit is important to all employers. You will have this problem regardless of what job you apply for. However, there is a difference between bankruptcy and just skipping out on debts or chronic bad credit.

Coders are heavily involved with an employer's finances. Employers need to see honesty, good judgement, integrity, and a sense of personal responsibility. They have to see that in order to demonstrate that they are concerned with those things and that they themselves intend to be ethical and honest. It is a lot like getting a job in a bank. When a job involves handling money, employers become very cautious.

Employers also need to see evidence of ethics and an understanding of legal and moral responsibility. Now that identity theft is so common, they cannot hire anyone who might be tempted to sell information. Someone who owes a lot of money might be in worse shape than someone who has declared bankrupcy.

I think you should proceed with your plans, but you should also start now to take corrective action. Your community probably has someone who can counsel you on credit repair. I mean government sponsored agency, not some scam. Work with them even if you do not think you need to. See if they have a job placement program. Perhaps they can help you get a job in a doctor's office or hospital.

Your current difficulties in MT can explain your situation, so be ready to use that to overcome employer objections. You cannot do that if your application is just tossed in the trash. That is why I suggest using a local government agency to get a job.

I also wonder how you plan to pay for a year of school. How will you support yourself that long? Are you unemployed? If so, why is it going to take a year to learn coding? Even college programs are usually only 9 months. Some online programs take a year, but that is based on someone working full time. The AAPC program takes far less than that. I am not trying to be critical, but these are things you do need to consider.

Coding Jobs
Sep 21, 2013

I've been tossing around the idea of going to school for coding.  I researched jobs yesterday, though and I saw no jobs paying higher than $18/hr.  For those of you working in the field, can you confirm or deny if you make more than that?  I'm still pulling in $24-28 doing MT and am going to need at least that in a new job (I get that starting out I wouldn't get that, but I do have some experience in coding and would hope that would at least land me mid level).  ...

Coding Jobs Going To India?

This is a question for coders.  I am thinking about taking the coding course through Andrews school.  I am just asking about the outlook for medical coding in the future.  Have any coders out there lost their jobs due to it going to India or overseas or to any computerized program like Epic or Amazing Charts.  I am just asking before I take the course through Andrews.  I think there is a future in coding. Thank you for any replies. ...

HIT Training But No Jobs - Should Have Studied Pure Coding
May 11, 2015

We all learn from our mistakes. Some of us just take longer.  After bumbling around for several years with HIT training, etc., it's time to get serious and go for a coding certificate.  What a waste these past several years have been and still not even close to being prepared for a CCS or a job as a coder.  Starting over again but doing it right this time. In order to get a coding job, you need that CCS. The rest was just filling in time and wasting money. ...
