Coding jobs going to India? - susan

This is a question for coders. I am thinking about taking the coding course through Andrews school. I am just asking about the outlook for medical coding in the future. Have any coders out there lost their jobs due to it going to India or overseas or to any computerized program like Epic or Amazing Charts. I am just asking before I take the course through Andrews. I think there is a future in coding. Thank you for any replies.

Anyone can say anything and claim credibility.

This forum does have some real coders who visit fairly regularly. We know that. Our proof is in how they answer the coding questions that others can't answer. Redpen is an example. She knows her stuff! Nobody is perfect, but if she answers a coding question, you can bet she has done her own homework. I value her opinion. Look down the board for several months, if you can do that on this board, and read anything she has written. Also, maybe she will drop in and answer the question for you.

If you read all the archived posts but cannot tell if they were authored by coders, how do you plan on telling if MY post NOW is written by a coder? I can repeat everything again for you, but what will that accomplish? You still won't know who wrote it.

I think that if you read those posts you should be able to see that noncoders appear to post questions like yours. Some noncoders post Chicken Little fears in response and there may be a post or two by a coder who talks about offshoring and EHRs. Several coders will respond to make it clear that they do not think offshoring and EHRs will have a negative effect on coding.

I've been tossing around the idea of going to school for coding. I researched jobs yesterday, though and I saw no jobs paying higher than $18/hr. For those of you working in the field, can you confirm or deny if you make more than that? I'm still pulling in $24-28 doing MT and am going to need at least that in a new job (I get that starting out I wouldn't get that, but I do have some experience in coding and would hope that would at least land me mid level). ...

in my area. A hospital here is offering a $5,000 sign-on bonus for a FT inpatient coder as well as for a PT DRG validation specialist. Just wondering if that is the norm or if, since this hospital isn't in the greatest area, they are having trouble finding people to work there. Any thoughts? ...

I have to file bankruptcy in the next month or so. There's no way around that. I am also going to be starting a coding program. A lot of coding employers do a credit check. I guess I'll finish coding school in a year or so, so by that time, after building back up my credit, will the bankruptcy not matter so much to future employers? ...

We all learn from our mistakes. Some of us just take longer. After bumbling around for several years with HIT training, etc., it's time to get serious and go for a coding certificate. Wondering if there are any coders out there who can give me an idea of the fate of coding due to the EMR. Are there still coding jobs out there?
