Any remote coders out there or is this a farce like the ads saying you can make $40,000 a year from home as an MT??

You have to have 3 to 5 years of experience before you can work from home.
Not to mention credentials - See Msg

They often require AHIMA credentials, but the pay is usually excellent.

I have an associate's degree in coding. I was not able to find a job because everyone wanted 3+ years of experience. I worked as an intern in a doctor's office while I was in college, but they could not afford to pay me once I graduated, so that opportunity went out the door. I then turned to transcription, which now stinks! So a lot of student loans later and I'm still making minimum wage or less. :(

I was not able to get certification because my instructor said we would have to get experience in a job before we could take the certification test. My problem was everyone wanted experience, but no one wanted to give me a chance to get that experience by hiring me. I worked as an intern in a small doctor office for 9 months with no pay. The doctor wanted me to stay and help out for free, but obviously that wasn't going to happen! Good luck and hopefully your experience will be better than mine.
Unfortunately, your instructor was incorrect. - sm

You don't need experience to take either the CPC or CCS. If coding is something you wish to pursue, I would suggest you go to the AAPC/AHIMA websites and find some materials to help you study up for the exams. You'll be in a much better position to get a coding job if you have either of those credentials.

What school told you this? Please complain to them about this instructor, because she gave you misinformation. Unless she meant that she did not teach you enough to pass any exam, you certainly could have.
Experience is not required to take the CPC exam. It is required to get the full credential, but that is something different. If you passed it, your school would have counted for one year of the experience requirement. Your job in the doctor's office would have counted for experience, too.
It is important to do your own research rather than blindly follwing what others tell you. It is also important to get experience any way you can, even if it is unpaid.
When you are looking for a job, you have to do so aggressively. Employers all "want" experience, but the fact of the matter is that they will take inexperienced, but credentialed, coders.
I agree that you should review and take that exam.

I live everyday in fear that I will lose my clients due to EHR and whatnot. I work for a large MTSO and have to work on a multitude of different accounts. I get 5 cpl for VR, which is awful VR by the way, but have gotten pretty good at this editing stuff. I stay incredibly focused, make tons of shortcuts in my Shorthand expander, and just go, go go. So it's possible but definitely not "easy." Please don't ask where I work. If you've been in this game for a while, you know that those of us still hanging on for dear life to our "good" jobs are not going to give up that information so we don't end up OOW.

I am an MT and am currently taking a coding/billing course and plan to take the CPC exam after completion. Does anyone know of any companies who hire newbies to work at home as coders? Any sites like MTstars that post coder jobs? I prefer to stay at home, but everything I'm seeing requires experience. Thanks for any help. ...
I noticed a few companies, one of them being Accentus, have coding positions that can be done from home. Anyone have one of these? Is the pay good or is it lower than a job out of the home? ...
Hi. I am an RHIT, 17 years coding experience. Recently relocated to a remote community and now searching for a remote coding position. So many "companies'.......so overwhelming. Can anyone point me to a good reliable list of companies that hire remote coders? Any advice? ...
Are there any companies out there that hire specifically for remote coders. I saw a few and applied but have never heard back. I do have my CPC but I don't know if they are looking for anything in particular. I also have almost 18 years of billing/coding experience. Maybe the jobs are just rare. ...
I currently have a small IC MT account that I plan to support myself on while I get through coding school. This IC account is all done via encrypted email and can be done from anywhere I can get a wifi connection. I have worked on this job while visiting friends in Italy. It is a wonderful thing.
My question is this: Are there opportunities for remote coders (maybe not in the beginning) than enable that freedom? I used to work remotely doing MT for a hospital ...
Has anyone ever heard of a company called Remote Medical Jobs? I've seen several medical transcriptionist job postings by this company over the past several months. ...
I am a MT/VR considering training for Coding/Billing and wondering how hard it is to get a remote coding job or if I would be limited to finding a position in an office, hospital, etc. I enjoy working from home, but in the past few years, just cannot make a decent living anymore. Thanks for any info you can give me. ...
I've been tossing around the idea of going to school for coding. I researched jobs yesterday, though and I saw no jobs paying higher than $18/hr. For those of you working in the field, can you confirm or deny if you make more than that? I'm still pulling in $24-28 doing MT and am going to need at least that in a new job (I get that starting out I wouldn't get that, but I do have some experience in coding and would hope that would at least land me mid level).  ...
I really need to get out of the MT profession. I am a newly single mom and am making less money as an MT than I was 5 years ago. I just cannot afford to do this anymore. I always see coding jobs posted at my local hospital. Do you think these jobs will be sent overseas just like transcription? I am thinking of going into nursing but don't know yet. What would be a good healthcare career to get into? ...
This is a question for coders. I am thinking about taking the coding course through Andrews school. I am just asking about the outlook for medical coding in the future. Have any coders out there lost their jobs due to it going to India or overseas or to any computerized program like Epic or Amazing Charts. I am just asking before I take the course through Andrews. I think there is a future in coding.
Thank you for any replies. ...
in my area. A hospital here is offering a $5,000 sign-on bonus for a FT inpatient coder as well as for a PT DRG validation specialist. Just wondering if that is the norm or if, since this hospital isn't in the greatest area, they are having trouble finding people to work there. Any thoughts? ...
Once you learn coding, it's fun! I've done so many other jobs in my life that I can't even count them. I can't think of many that were actually fun, but I think coding is. ...
Has anyone graduating from the Andrews coding course gotten jobs. I know how hard it is to get a job without prior experience. I am 61 and wondering if it is worth the expense and effort to take the couse. I have fifteen years of MT experience and also have worked in a hospital for years before that. Thanks. ...
I have to file bankruptcy in the next month or so. There's no way around that. I am also going to be starting a coding program. A lot of coding employers do a credit check. I guess I'll finish coding school in a year or so, so by that time, after building back up my credit, will the bankruptcy not matter so much to future employers? ...
I wanna switch to coding from transcription after 14 years. I do have an Associate degree in health information technology and know coding, DRGs, inpatient and outpatient, SNOMED and CPT codes, ICD9 and some computerized systems. I'd love to continue working at home. Right now I am an MT but wouled like to do something else. Us transcriptionists fear our supervisors calls, letters...we avoid email sometimes for fear of the dreadfull termination letters. Ready for bed now. I need to wo ...
Hello, I am a MT and wanted to also do coding, could you please tell me how to search for jobs at home once I am done with school ?? Does anybody have a board for coder jobs thanks so much ...
We all learn from our mistakes. Some of us just take longer. After bumbling around for several years with HIT training, etc., it's time to get serious and go for a coding certificate. What a waste these past several years have been and still not even close to being prepared for a CCS or a job as a coder. Starting over again but doing it right this time. In order to get a coding job, you need that CCS. The rest was just filling in time and wasting money. ...
Yep, you read that right: Twitter. I have an account and just now I did a search at the top of the page, and you wouldn't believe all the results that came up, local results from different parts of the country posting coding jobs. It's great. So that's just FYI for y'all. ...
The people I know who will now be getting medical insurance will obviously now go to the doctor when they get sick. It makes sense to me that there will be more coding and more billing, right? That's a good thing for us I think. ...
I recently obtained my Certificate from a community college for Medical Transcription/Coding. I also work full time at our county mental health clinic, scheduling appointments for patients, answering telephones and transcribing reports for 3 psychiatrists (2 speaking in broken Indian dialect). I have submitted many resumes online to all types of transcription agencies and physician's offices. Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get a job as a remote transcriptionist and if you have any ...
I'm curious how many of you graduated from your medical coding/billing course and found a job to work remotely? I'm currently a transcriptionist looking to enroll in a coding/billing course, but will not be able to work onsite to gain experience that most of these companies are wanting. I've been doing some research and most of them want you to have 3 years onsite experience. I will need something remotely after graduation. I thought I would check here and ...
We all know the frustration in dictation where they don't use a pause button, how our salaries dwindle to nothing as a result. I noted an ad on the Job Seeker's Board to train to become a "remote scribe" for .07 to .08 CPL. Doesn't it seem this would also dwindle to nothing as it seems there would be far more waiting for data to enter and would take forever to complete a line if you are working in real time. Anyone have any info on how this would work? ...
Is anyone willing to share their pay rate per chart for outpatient remote contract coding? I am also curious if you ever get an increase in your pay rate or is this renegotiated in your contract. ...
...qualify for this job? I just have experience with medical terminology, working in Radiology with a little customer service and phone etiquette skills and ability to multitask. The rest, not so much. Wonder what is the hourly rate of pay. ...
