Coding jobs that hire you without certification? sm - Tired MT

Posted: Jun 08, 2015

I wanna switch to coding from transcription after 14 years. I do have an Associate degree in health information technology and know coding, DRGs, inpatient and outpatient, SNOMED and CPT codes, ICD9 and some computerized systems. I'd love to continue working at home. Right now I am an MT but wouled like to do something else. Us transcriptionists fear our supervisors calls, letters...we avoid email sometimes for fear of the dreadfull termination letters. Ready for bed now.  I need to work at home for my kids. Tia for listening.

The easiest route would be to get a certification. - sm

The majority of employers will require a certification. It is not going to be optional. Is there a reason you don't want to get that?

You mentioned a degree in HIT. Did you get the RHIT and is it current?

The thing is that if you know coding well enough to work, you will be able to demonstrate that by passing certification exams.

At this point, you will also have to learn ICD-10, the inpatient part of which is nothing like what you know. If you have been out of school for 14 or more years, you might want to take a coding course to get caught up and to learn ICD-10. That is really the easiest route. You will recoup what it costs fairly quickly.

Ha! and I want to win the lottery and live at the beach the rest of my life - aint happening

nobody cares if you have an associates in HIT and "know" coding. Without experience and credentials you might as well have an Associates in Fine Arts or something equally useless.

The right credentials CPC and CCS will do it, even without experience - Personal Experience

If you have the right credentials, the ones that are in demand, the CPC and CCS, you can definitely get a good job with excellent money. If you don't have credentials, it's just a dream. I have known people who got jobs before they got their credentials, at very good salaries, but they were credential-ready and were hired based on that, plus ability to pass employment coding test. Oh yes, the interview has to show that you aren't trouble waiting to happen too. If you have all that, there is no reason why you can't get that job you want. If you are missing any of those, work on it. Get the education, ability to pass the credential exams and employment tests that you need, and work on your interview skills.

The reason coding is such a great job is, all of those things count. You have to work hard to get into coding, but once you are in, it's wonderful. Good, hard work that is rewarding. You get paid for what you know. You get paid for the hard work you put in learning and sitting for those credential exams. You get paid for doing quality work. Coders get paid what their work is worth. I recommend that you do it!

Certification In Coding Or AA Degree In Coding??

Is there really such a thing as an AA degree in coding?  Sounds odd to me.  Health administration or management, or RHIT I can see, but coding? Is it not better to just become Certified even if you dont have an AA degree? ...

Coding Certification

Coding School And Certification
May 04, 2012

I am presently training in a new position at a physician's office.  I will be doing coding and billing.  I have coded in the past but I would like to go to school and become certified.  Can anyone please direct me in a good program rather on line or in the middle Tennessee area?  I have been an MT since 1986 and sadly this is a dying art.  Thank you. ...

CPC Certification -- Outpatient Coding Only??
Mar 26, 2013

With every intent of taking some classes in the fall to be able to sit for the CPC exam, I just read a post from another coder that the CPC only qualifies you to code for doctor's offices.  I currently work in a hospital, with the idea to try to transition to a coding position.  Will this just be a big waste for me?  What about the CPC-H?    ...

Coding Credentials/Certification
Apr 30, 2015

Good evening coders :)  I have been reviewing many posts and notice a trend of sorts.  Many posters feel that the AHIMA recognized RHIT credential is not sufficient to gain employment as a coder or that attending a 2 year AAS HIM program is not enough education to the ability to be a sucessful coder.  I was curious about geographic location playing a role in these assumptions?   As an employee in an HIM department, my director possesses the RHIT credential as well as majorit ...

Medical Coding - Wanted To Get CCS Certification?
Sep 16, 2012

I have  been a medical transcriptionist for just over 10 years but I am now looking into coding.  I was hoping for some info on this.  How easy is it to get a job working from home?  Is it hard to get a job straight out of school? What  would be the best school if I wanted to get CCS certification?  I have heard that Andrews School was a good one but would love input from everyone.  Thanks! ...

RHIT DEGREE VS CODING CERTIFICATION
Feb 13, 2013

In researching an HIT degree, I have mostly come across job descriptions that include coding.  I am currently a medical transcriptionist and jobs are now being shipped off shore.  Are coding jobs being shipped off shore as well?  And, if so, what would the benefit be of a degree in Health Information Techology?  What jobs are available other than coding and medical records? ...

When Will Coding Certification Tests Implement ICD-10 Testing?
Jan 06, 2015

Has there been an "official" word on when certification tests (CCA, CCS, CPC) will begin using ICD-10. AHIMA site indicates "once ICD-10 is implemented," which I assume would be October, but I swear I've seen posts that people have taken the tests using ICD-10 recently...?   Thank you! ...

Coding Jobs
Sep 21, 2013

I've been tossing around the idea of going to school for coding.  I researched jobs yesterday, though and I saw no jobs paying higher than $18/hr.  For those of you working in the field, can you confirm or deny if you make more than that?  I'm still pulling in $24-28 doing MT and am going to need at least that in a new job (I get that starting out I wouldn't get that, but I do have some experience in coding and would hope that would at least land me mid level).  ...

Do You Think Coding Jobs Will Be Sent Overseas Some Day As Well? Sm
Dec 23, 2009

I really need to get out of the MT profession.  I am a newly single mom and am making less money as an MT than I was 5 years ago.  I just cannot afford to do this anymore.  I always see coding jobs posted at my local hospital.  Do you think these jobs will be sent overseas just like transcription?  I am thinking of going into nursing but don't know yet.  What would be a good healthcare career to get into? ...

Coding Jobs Going To India?
Dec 21, 2011

This is a question for coders.  I am thinking about taking the coding course through Andrews school.  I am just asking about the outlook for medical coding in the future.  Have any coders out there lost their jobs due to it going to India or overseas or to any computerized program like Epic or Amazing Charts.  I am just asking before I take the course through Andrews.  I think there is a future in coding. Thank you for any replies. ...

HIT Training But No Jobs - Should Have Studied Pure Coding
May 11, 2015

We all learn from our mistakes. Some of us just take longer.  After bumbling around for several years with HIT training, etc., it's time to get serious and go for a coding certificate.  What a waste these past several years have been and still not even close to being prepared for a CCS or a job as a coder.  Starting over again but doing it right this time. In order to get a coding job, you need that CCS. The rest was just filling in time and wasting money. ...

Just Another Vent About Jobs, No Jobs, Requirement Of Jobs, Etc.
Aug 18, 2010

It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment.  If an employer can PROMISE IN ...

Certification?
Apr 27, 2010

I took online coding program years ago as well as an MT program.  I decided to go into MT but am wanting to start back up with coding again.  Is it worth it to do another coding program or to pursue a certification?  I'm not sure the money I'd need to spend would really justify either.  I've been doing a lot of research and while certification is preferred, it's not always a requirement in job descriptions.  Thanks ...
