Can newbies get remote coding jobs? - newbiecoder

Posted: Sep 20, 2011

I am an MT and am currently taking a coding/billing course and plan to take the CPC exam after completion.  Does anyone know of any companies who hire newbies to work at home as coders? Any sites like MTstars that post coder jobs? I prefer to stay at home, but everything I'm seeing requires experience.  Thanks for any help.

They usually want you to certified and then work on-site for at least - a few months

Most places are still not hiring coders to work at home. A few will, but they usually want you to (1) be certified, and (2) work on-site for at least a few months. It's possible, but not very likely that you'll find a work-at-home coding job immediately. You might find a billing job like that, but those are a completely different kind of job. Coding jobs are usually just coding, not coding and billing. See some of the conversations below about that. There's a very big difference between billing and coding. Coding is a credentialed position in most cases. Billing can be done by someone right off the street with no training.

I have yet to find a company that will hire a newbie to work remotely as a coder - nm

Okay, thank you both for taking the time to respond. I had a feeling that might be the case that I would have to start in-house. I am keeping my fingers crossed that some of these companies will at least allow us newbies to test and show our skills before turning us away. Thanks again.

Remote Coding Questions.
Jan 31, 2015

I currently have a small IC MT account that I plan to support myself on while I get through coding school.  This IC account is all done via encrypted email and can be done from anywhere I can get a wifi connection.  I have worked on this job while visiting friends in Italy.  It is a wonderful thing.  My question is this:  Are there opportunities for remote coders (maybe not in the beginning) than enable that freedom?  I used to work remotely doing MT for a hospital ...

To The M*Modal Newbies On The Coding Board
Mar 23, 2014

on this board pointed out to me that I misspoke.  AHIMA does not approve coding courses.  What I meant to say was that, to take the CCS you must submit an application, which must be approved by AHIMA before you can sit for the test.  If you do not have the required two years of experience, or a professional certification and a year's experience, you can still sit for the exam if your coding program fulfills the requirements of A&P, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medi ...

Do I Bother Applying For "no Newbies" Jobs?
Nov 08, 2009

I've just finished MT school and am starting to apply for jobs while I wait for my final grade.  There is nothing in town, I live in a small town and the hospital fired all their MTs, so I need to work from home. But every ad I see says no newbies AND many say school doesn't count for experience. Of course, my school promised that most places did count our training as 2 years' experience, but I have this sinking suspicion they lied. Do I go ahead and apply for these jobs, or ...

Coding Jobs
Sep 21, 2013

I've been tossing around the idea of going to school for coding.  I researched jobs yesterday, though and I saw no jobs paying higher than $18/hr.  For those of you working in the field, can you confirm or deny if you make more than that?  I'm still pulling in $24-28 doing MT and am going to need at least that in a new job (I get that starting out I wouldn't get that, but I do have some experience in coding and would hope that would at least land me mid level).  ...

HIT Training But No Jobs - Should Have Studied Pure Coding
May 11, 2015

We all learn from our mistakes. Some of us just take longer.  After bumbling around for several years with HIT training, etc., it's time to get serious and go for a coding certificate.  What a waste these past several years have been and still not even close to being prepared for a CCS or a job as a coder.  Starting over again but doing it right this time. In order to get a coding job, you need that CCS. The rest was just filling in time and wasting money. ...
