Now that I have my certification, I am starting my job search. I applied to a medical center in a large city nearby that requires a credit check. What does my credit history have to do with a job?

I don't agree with it, but here's a link to explaining what the companies say. Unless you have some severe things going on, bad debt several times over and no attempt at responsibility of taking care of it, not who you say you are, etc., I don't think it plays a huge part in things.

Washing dishes and mowing lawns are "jobs." Coding and other jobs in health information and medical care are "responsible jobs" in that they affect the health, safety, and privacy of others. Coding deals with information that affects individuals and institutions. It involves money. There is the potential for fraud and abuse, and in some cases embezzlement.

Employers protect patients and themselves by doing background checks, including checking credit histories. Your credit history provides an indication of your personal and financial responsibillity. A background check provides information about past criminal activities and an indication of your potential for becoming involved in crime.

Healthcare employers cannot hire you if you have a criminal history. They cannot hire you if your credit report indicates that you might be a risk. Whether you like this or not, that is the way it is.

This is the reason many college programs will not accept you if you have a criminal background or if your license in another healthcare field has been revoked. They know you cannot work in the field. They also cannot place you in internship programs because those same background checks are required for that.

Some people have poor credit because of events they cannot control. If you do, be up front about it to employers. Provide supporting documentation if you have any and be prepared with a plan to improve your credit history.

This is something to consider before going into coding. If you have a criminal history or a revoked healthcare license, or even revoked credentials in another field, coding is not a good choice for you.

If you know you have bad credit, start improving it now because nearly ALL employers are using credit histories. It is one reason unemployed people have difficulty getting hired. That might not be fair, but that is the way it is, so if you need to counteract that, you should start working on it now. There are federal websites offering information.

Last night I did two fairly long duplex studies where the doctor says "use my standard" with a lot of "move this, take that out, insert this..." Not difficult, but time consuming. When I went in to look at my line count after my shift, I got a total of 20 lines for the two reports, or 16.48 cents! What gives with this? Did I miss the memo, or did they just not tell us? Next week they'll be asking us to pay them when we actually get work. :o( ...

Had an excellent job until hospital outsourced 5 years ago, downhill from there. Paycheck for the last 2 weeks was $88. I bet over in India they made more than me even with 35 years exp. I have to file bankruptcy in the next month or so. There's no way around that. I am also going to be starting a coding program. A lot of coding employers do a credit check. I guess I'll finish coding school in a year or so, so by that time, after building back up my credit, will the bankruptcy not matter so much to future employers? ...

I keep meaning to keep track of the straight transcription reports I type compared to ASR even though they are very few and far between, but I swear, every time I do get them, when I review my counts, it seems like some of them are missing. I turned in my 2-week notice and working the last week of the notice. When can I expect to get my last check as I am waiting on labels from the company to send back computer and cannot get CCM to answer as to if check will be held until computer is returned? Is there anybody with this experience that can tell me how long to expect to wait for the check and to wait for the labels as I have nowhere else to turn for the answers? I'm no genuis, but I think I have to make some changes here. My PT check for 20 hours was around 100 less than my FT 40 hour check. I like my FT job, good accounts, great supervisors, but the lines just don't accumulate there like anywhere else I have ever worked. Well, to the poster below in ESL garbage land, first let me say. I too was in that same place 2 weeks ago. An addition to my regular account, but it was all I was getting and NOT getting my OP notes at all. The reports were not more than 20 lines usually, but I spent much, much time in trying to decipher and be FTR. A doctor who cannot pronounce encephalomalacia!
