Assumptions - Cheryl

I see that several people here are assuming that because over the last several years of pop-up fast-track training to become a medical transcriptionist, that that's all anyone's ever done to become one. Please allow me to inform you that 30 years ago, when I started doing this, there were no such things. I went to a 2-year college and earned an Associates degree in Medical Records Administration to be able to type transcription well. While specific training was not even Required back then, and we sat in the doctor's office and typed for him on a Typewriter, I went the extra mile to become the Best at what I did.
Maybe Your training is easy to throw away because you got Yours at some random online, fly-by-night cert. program, but I feel that for me it was something that I AM college-educated in and have stuck with for many years, and I'm not willing, for one second, to just throw it away because You said circumstances can't be changed. I didn't get where I am today with that kind of attitude and listening to people tell me to "give up".
I personally feel like I should at least Try to fight for my discipline...and NOT just roll over and take in the ass.
On a side note, I hold a Bachelor's degree in something else that I am able to do from home as a my own business. Since I received that, I supplement my income with the transcription. I FIRMLY believe that NOBODY, whether they have a college degree or a tech certification, NOBODY should allow themselves to be a victim in their career or anywhere else for that matter. This is America.
That being said, if they choose to farm this out overseas, etc. then there will come a time that they discover just how invaluable we are - when they Are sued for malpractice, and they Do kill someone. I don't even necessarily think the actual doctors know that their reports are farmed in the manner that they are, and I am quite inclined to believe they would not approve.
So, maybe all these years, the problem lies in your approach. Direct it somewhere besides the MTSOs. They've been called out on it before and they can be called out on it again, but don't stop there.
Reassess your approach.
And quit telling people that they are worthless because they didn't get a 2-year degree...some effort at learning a trade skill is better than settling for flipping burgers and waiting tables all your life. In ANY case, it's called Growth and I congratulate Anyone that reaches out and is willing to make a personal growth choice. This is not a punishable offense and should not be downplayed.
