make sure your antivirus is up to date - computer crashed today

Posted: Aug 12, 2010

Nasty virus going around that attacks your internet explorer and basically will only let you go to 1 website, the site to buy the antivirus to take care of the problem.  When I called support they just took my address to send me a new computer.  Just a heads up to you all.  Oh yes and this was with Kapersky already installed.

This happened to me, too...sm - mb

But it was my personal computer and not my work computer. I'm at a loss as to how to fix it. Keep getting a popup to buy the antivirus product. Anybody else out there know how to get rid of this or am I just going to have to buy another computer?

When it happened to me, I had to take it to a computer repair service.

You can try doing a system restore back to a date before you got the virus. I got one on my work computer from facebook and was able to restore to a previous date and it took care of it. Of course you will lose anything you had loaded or saved after that date.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Malware bytes is the BEST thing I've ever found. If your main computer is completely locked up, you'll have to down load this on another pc or laptop and transfer it to a flash drive.

I know at one point I had a hard time running anything when the virus was in full force, and I think I found a 2 to 5 second window when the computer first turned back on again where I could run the antispyware before the virus took hold again. A full scan will take about an hour or more and you'll be shocked and amazed at the number of things it finds. It's saved my bacon a couple of times now.

Once you have the computer back restored, run Malware Bytes on a regular basis and Microsoft Security Essentials is free and it's also pretty good at catching stuff like this. I also have Spyware Doctor as well, but that's $40 and I would only spend that if it were my own computer, not the company's. I have all three and use them pretty consistently because it seems like once you pick up one of these stinking viruses you're a really easy target for the rest of them out there in cyberspace.

Good luck.

Malware Bytes and Spyware doctor are actually VIRUSES. - Theyll eventually re-infect your PC.

Best thing to do is take the PC to a competent repair service to restore the system & get rid of the virus. Also, it would be wise to get the Pro (paid) version of one of the better REAL anti-virus programs. The freeware is all just virus-ridden crap.
Sorry, you would be incorrect on that. - Happy MT Robin

Spyware Doctor is not free and Malware Bytes has a purchase option. They are not viruses.

when you get a pop up saying computer at risk, TURN OFF COMPUTER. Touch nothing on the pop up screen, that just activates it. I had to have my hard drive dumped. Expander, med dictionary, entries into regular spellcheck, voice player, everything but documents, had to be replaced. I cried.

Ditto re: Malwarebytes - Ang

I also recommend malwarebytes - I was getting one of those unsolicited scans daily on my laptop- bought malwarebytes and have had no trouble since. Worth the cost.

Malwarebytes is likely what infected your PC in the 1st - place, so youd HAVE to buy it. (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
Same with Spyware Doctor and all those others that offer freeware in addition to the paid version. Malwarebytes is what infected me in the beginning. I was able to get rid of it temporarily by doing a system restore, but eventually Spyware Doctor joined in on the destruction, and eventually the PC would do NOTHING. Couldn't even turn it off without pulling the plug each time.

So although MWB is now effectively keeping that malware program off your PC, you did exactly what they wanted by buying their program, because they held your PC hostage.

My best advice to all would be do NOT buy ANY *anti-virus* program that starts putting pop-ups onto your computer. Stick with the well-known brands: AVG, Norton, etc. Buying any of the so-called *anti-virus* programs (that are likely the ones that infected your PC in the first place) is just rewarding them for infesting peoples' PCs with malicious, invasive malware and trojans.

Norton let me get infected - Happy MT Robin

I picked up a massive virus with the most current version of Norton running.

Malware Bytes and Spyware Doctor are not the ones with the popups. I was recommended those by my computer service tech.

Sorry to sound like such a cheerleader for them, but I really want to correct misinformation.

Ditto again to what Happy MT Robin says - same for me exactly - you say it clearly and accurately re: malware bytes.
Actually, youre right about Norton. Its what I was - running when the Malwarebyte -

bugs infested my computer. My computer guy took off the Norton, and set me up with AVG. So far, I really like it. It updates frequently, and seems to be just one-half of a jump ahead of the malware viruses.

I was getting popups for Spyware doctor once I was infected by Malwarebytes. There was also another one before that... with an official-looking green screen... something like "AV Secure", or something. I made the mistake of thinking it was a Microsoft update, and clicked on it. That was the beginning of all my problems.

I've been getting popups for another one recently, but have learned never to even let my cursor touch them anywhere. I just do "CTL-ALT-DEL" and close that function.

Here's What I Did - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
It wouldn't let me into System Restore to an earlier date and would let me uninstall. So, finally what I did was run an advanced scan (I have Microsoft Essentials). It took an hour, but it let me into System Restore through a back door, and I simply put my computer back to the day before. All is fine now.

Happend to me too, twice. The 1st time I got by - Rocky Raccoon, MTSW

with running a system-restore. Next time nothing worked except taking the PC to the 'puter-repair-guy, and having to spend $250 to get rid of it and get my other programs restored.

So far, so good: Installed the Pro version of AVG ($39.95), but so far it's great. Every morning, 1st thing I do is check for upgrades and download them. (Usually one every other day or so).

Had to remove Limewire (for now). :(

A few pop-ups managed to squeak by occasionally, but I find by doing CTL-ALT-DEL to get to the job manager, I can get rid of them.

Many of the so-called "malware-protection" programs (such as Malwarebytes) are, themselves, malware. They'll "correct" the virus (that undoubtly THEY wrote!), and then infect you with a new one.

All these malware-writing scum deserve to be electrocuted. Or shot.

Thanks For The Antivirus Advice
May 10, 2010

I just wanted to say how grateful I am for this board.  I posted a few weeks ago how I hated Kapersky and how it kept updating while I was working and stalled my computer out.  Some great advice was posted on this board about exiting the program and running when YOU want, not when MQ decides to run it and also names of other virus protection programs other than Kapersky (and McAffee which is just as bad).  I tried exiting Kapersky which worked okay, but I finally removed it and in ...
