I have Norton Antivirus and everytime it does something it slows my computer down. - PAMT

Posted: Apr 11, 2012

Hard to work when it does that.  I have stopped the full system scan and made it at night but Norton still does other things and of course checks all emails and the computer just slows down so far it is hard to work until it is done.

My tech guy said Norton itself was an antivirus - Happy MT Robin

This was when I was having to have my laptop completely redone after I picked up a massive virus while running Norton.

He recommended Microsoft Security Essentials which is free which I use now. I also use Malware Bytes which is $25 per computer and I haven't had a problem since.

Norton stinks, it is a memory hog - sm - Zorro

I tried it twice, why again after it blew up my one computer I will never know. But the second time (this was about 10+ years later, decided to try it again), it just slows up everything just as you are experiencing. Any computer geek I have spoken to says not to use Norton. I use AVG Anti-virus, love it. Can put it on multiple computers too. I find AVG is one of the only ones out there that does not mess up my email (I have the spam feature and email screening turned off). I see my nightly scan at 2am finds a virus about 2 x a year, I presume something new that got thru before the AVG upgrade that day. But I have not had issues even when that happens. But there are a lot of good free virus protection programs out there

But for your sanity dump the Norton's.

Also used AVG but with a twist - ICManiac

I have an all-in-one machine and it "goes to sleep" after a certain period of time. When that happens, it disconnects from the internet connection, which is a great feature to protect intrusions when you are away from your machine. The problem came when AVG was automatically downloading its virus defititions and the internet disconnect occured. My computer locked up and failed to go through the start up process on reboot.

I took it to a local computer service company and paid $45 to have them do a re-install to the morning prior to the problem. They were able to reinstall AVG and everything returned to normal.

In hindsight, I can tell you it doesn't matter what antivirus you use if you have an all-in-one machine. That would happen regardless of what antivirus you used. Having had a lot of slow reboots due to Norton, I would rather have AVG. BTW, I have since replaced my hard drive and installed a different operating system on my all-in-one machine and then installed a different antivirus program with no problems - all thanks to the going to sleep issue being handled differently by the new operating system. I do recommend AVG now and so do my computer support gurus :)

I was using Avast - used to be great

Everytime I Bring Consistent ASR Errors To The Attention Of Those Who
Nov 22, 2012

they blame it on the transcriptionists. I get told that this must be the way the transcriptions are editing the output. Are there really that may bad/horrible transcriptionists in the company??? I don't believe there are that many poor transcriptions..... unless they are using ILP's to train the ASR. Maybe that is the question I should be asking: Is the output so poor because you (the software techs) including ILP editing?? ...

Extra Work Slows Down No Pay
Apr 07, 2014

When I get partial dictation reports on EditScript where you don't have to do anything in regards to header/demographics, my speed in terms of lines per hour is almost twice as fast. When there are so many new worktypes with new MT Instructions, the speed goes way down. When the header shows no medical record number and I have to enter in demographics what speaker dictates, the speed goes way down. The point is that I think every one of the reports should be like partial dictations in wh ...

Jan 15, 2011

Who do you work for then?  If every company is horrible.. what do you do?  It seems there are no recommended companies anymore, not one.  In that case, it would seem that maybe everyone should start looking for a new career, no? Im not being negative...or mean.  I am just curious.  Where do you go from here when the pay is low, or the company is horrible?   When I first started doing MT work 10 years ago this site was plumishing.  There were a few companies ...

Feb 07, 2015

I could not log into the system and IT guy's solution is turn of computer and turn it on again, well now everyday that is what I have to do. Yet another time consumer that is costing me money. Good grief! I would call IT back, but I fear that may be more time consuming. I am hoping that Sunday's maintenance takes care of the problem. Another thing is, I cannot believe that they have the audacity to ask us for overtime every week after changing our schedules. This schedule change has re ...

Norton Alert On EditScript

Thanks For The Antivirus Advice
May 10, 2010

I just wanted to say how grateful I am for this board.  I posted a few weeks ago how I hated Kapersky and how it kept updating while I was working and stalled my computer out.  Some great advice was posted on this board about exiting the program and running when YOU want, not when MQ decides to run it and also names of other virus protection programs other than Kapersky (and McAffee which is just as bad).  I tried exiting Kapersky which worked okay, but I finally removed it and in ...
