Suggestions for a good Antivirus Software? - LaLaMT

I have just spent the better part of my evening waging war against a very pesky and persistent virus called backdoor.cycbot. After several scans in safe mode, I think I finally got it, but now a bunch of my desktop icons are gone and on my start menu, when you click on the program name, there's nothing, just the word "empty." Long story short, I had manually find all my programs through Windows Explorer and creat a shortcut on my desktop for each and every one of them and I still cannot find my Dictaphone ExText program so will probably have to have my MTSO reload.

I have Symantec Endpoint Protection and Malwarebytes on my PC currently and yet I have had to battle those false security viruses like the cycbot beforel. I am getting ready to purchase a new laptop and I would like to find an antivirus/antispyware/antimalware program that does it job and PROTECTS my PC without slowing it down. Please some nice techie person out there have pity on me and point me in the right direction!

My ISP provides us with free antivirus software, first McAfee, and later switched to Norton. Had problems with both. and after 3 trips to the computer shop, they recommended Vipre. I absolutely love it. It runs quietly in the background, and doesn't slow me down when it's scanning or updating, which it does frequently. It cost less than $40 (I think).

Besides Vipre and Malwarebites, I have a program that is free called WOT (Web of Trust). It's a software that provides instant information on websites when ou're surfing - like googling, etc. It puts little symbols next to each website to tell you if it's safe to open. I do endless goggling, and it's a lifesaver knowing what I'm opening is safe.

I've been using Avast! for years now. I've recommended it to everybody. The only issue it has (it's a known issue on the companies website) is it can interfere with Outlook (not express). I had to disable the Outlook scanner but besides that, it works awesome.

The best way against viruses though it to stay away from any kind of shady site. IE porn/warez/hacking/etc.

Scanning in safe mode was a good idea though!

for a hospital who supplies the PC and it has McAfee on it. If I'm able to manually perform a scan on the PC, I have no idea how and I have had problems with malware, spyware, and trojans three different times in the last year. Somehow I have gotten this virus on my laptop and when searching for ways to remove it on the internet (on my desktop), all the sites are either extremely comlicated or want you to download things in order to remove it.
