Can I make a comment about the test itself? - SM

Posted: Mar 11, 2014

I don't see anyone talking about the test itself or working coders or coding students bringing it up, so I will. I went to school for coding, got certified and could not find a job. That aside, the A and P portion of my schooling was extremely intense. I have been an MT for 15 years and I had no idea how lacking my knowledge of A/P really was. I figured just because I was an MT, it would be easy. Boy was I wrong. I would encourage you not to take this test lightly.

BTW, I am part-time and trying to get out. The 2 years' experience sounds good, but given my experience with this company, it's too risky. Good luck!

Just took a practice test. Agree - NOT EASY

[ In Reply To ..]
It wasn't an mmodal practice test, just a general A/P test I found online. It is not medical terminology, it is much more than that.

Note there is a time limit on the test, so you better know your stuff or be a fast researcher.

Also, the email for the coder program put in all caps the course would be INTENSE and you must be present for every single day of training.

It seems like a great opportunity on its face, and for some people I think it will be. However, I don't think that all 60 people who get into the program will come out of it successful.

So think long and hard before you commit.

A&P - gltrgrami

[ In Reply To ..]
Yep, she's right. I took A&P, along with a few other courses at my local junior college when I decided I wanted to become a medical transcriptionist. It was extremely hard. Just learning the cells alone was brutal. Rethink this if you have not taken A&P. I studied my butt off and got a B+. Truth be known, this is why they are requiring A&P; how many people will really pass it. I am too close to full retirement to even think about coding, let alone stay with MM. I just want out!!

Excuse me, but how do you know they are - "requiring A&P"?

[ In Reply To ..]
Where did that come from?

The e-mail. - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
You have to take an A/P test and the top 60 scores will be allowed into the program.

The test will be hard and many will fail.

What email was that? - Coder
[ In Reply To ..]
When this discussion began, the email did not say what would be on the test. That's why people asked what would be on it.

*I* said I thought maybe med terms and A&P, and I talked about coding programs typically requiring those courses as prerequisites.

Now, you are claiming the MM email said the test would be on A&P and it is because A&P is required.

?????
The e-mail said you must take an - Anatomy and Physiology test
[ In Reply To ..]
and be in the top 60 scores to get into the program.

I guess I was assuming that the test would be anatomy and physiology, you know, because it is an anatomy and physiology test.

I am not a coder, nor do I play one on t.v., however, I worked in an office and interacted with them and they had to have extensive anatomical and physiological knowledge in order to code.

And that was when there 13,000 codes - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
There will be over 100,000 codes with ICD10.
So what? Nobody memorizes them. - Coder
[ In Reply To ..]
Makes no difference how many codes there are.

No, but you do have to know where to look - in a sea of thousands of codes
[ In Reply To ..]
As a coder, if you are one, you must know it is a tedious and demanding job that requires extreme accuracy and with the massive amount of new codes coming into play you have to pinpoint exactly which code.

Not easy and I wonder why you are trying to make it sound as if it is.

Those who get into this program need to understand it isn't going to be easy to pass through the training.
(Snort!) There is an alphabetic index. - No tedium here
[ In Reply To ..]
Boy, do you have the wrong idea!

So you are saying it is incredibly easy and - that anyone can do it
[ In Reply To ..]
Well, it's good you hold your profession in such high regard.

From what I have heard it is BORING, BORING, BORING and STRESSFUL.

And you really do need to know anatomy and physiology and be a decent researcher.

What is your motive in making it sound like a slow thinking monkey could do the job?
Good grief, who are you asking??? - Not bored or stressed
[ In Reply To ..]
And you all here aren't bored, frustrated, or stressed by your current MT job?

I don't find coding tedious, boring, or stressful. It is challenging and, at least to me, interesting and worthwhile. It is also well-paying.

If your friends find it otherwise, maybe they are in the wrong kind of coding job.

That's pretty much anyone working in - the medical field. sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Nurses, MTs, MOAs, CMAs all have to have some knowledge of anatomy & physiology; but depending on the line of work and program you're going into it can be taught as an accelerated course. I took A&P I&II for the nursing program because it's required, but a friend of mine who went through a CMA program did an accelerated course in a few weeks as part of her program.

I can't imagine MM being that extensive with the A&P portion. Obviously you will be most likely be required to have some knowledge of it, but I doubt it will be that extensive. I agree with the coder above, as I don't think MM has the time or financial resources at this point to go that deep.
I think people are talking about the test just - to be accepted into the program
[ In Reply To ..]
No one has a clue what the actual program is going to be like.

There is an anatomy and physiology test that you have to take to get into the program and the top 60 scores will be the only ones accepted.

So I would highly suggest you study for that test. Unless of course your objective is to misguide the test takers to think it will be ever so easy and don't even bother studying. If so, then carry on. Makes my chances better.
Not taking the test, I dont work for MM anymore - just find the subject
[ In Reply To ..]
Interesting and reading the threads. Good luck to all of you & not trying to mislead anyone. I just don't think people should talk themselves out of it before trying because they think it will be too hard. If you say you can't do it "it's going to be too hard" then you set yourself up to fail. You can do whatever you put your mind to.
It does say that - see message

"Candidates will be selected primarily based on the Anatomy and Physiology test"

Just a word--geez! - gltrgrami

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't get so flustered. Geez!! I just meant why would they choose A&P of all the medical courses that they could have chosen. Obviously, who ever takes the test is "required to pass it." That's all I meant. Chill!

In addition, the e-mail stated it would be - INTENSE training

[ In Reply To ..]
Coders have to have extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology in order to code correctly.

Anyone who thinks that years as an MT is enough to just glide into coding will be sadly mistaken.

I am not saying coding is harder than MT, but it utilizes a vastly different skill set.

Obviously MM wants to have to actually train on the - difficult stuff. They want you to already

[ In Reply To ..]
know A&P. Again, MM taking advantage of what an MT might already know. Why should they train us, they can only choose those MTs that have a grasp on A&P, and they dont have to use company time or resources to train.

Oops, MM doesnt want - nm

So Most Companies Make You Test, Even If

If so, does the version of Windows you have matter?  I have Windows 8.1 on my laptop now.  I know I am going to have to buy another computer IF I get another job as most require Windows 7 or 8.  But I'd like to wait and see if I can get a job before buying another computer, as who knows if I will actually find one.  I am hoping I can at least test on the laptop I currently have, which has 8.1.  Thanks!  ...

Nice Comment From Doctor

Just finished a consult from one of my docs, and he's a little hoarse today, but not bad and at the end he says "and apologies to the transcription ladies.  I know my voice is not necessarily the best for dictating today, and thanks for bearing with me." It sure is nice when they acknowledge that there is actually a person on the other end who is listening to them. ...

A Comment On The Swamp Board -- Sm
May 13, 2010

Okay, so in my experience in trying to be compliant on making up time and "switching" swapping time when I had a funeral to attend.   No problem picking up the times, but here is what happens.   When I have had NJA or something happened which required a 30 min here or there I wanted to pick up and make up the hours.   Well, in theory it would seem to be good; but in reality it ADDED hours to my schedule and kept my original 24 hours per week.   This "swap" ...

I Would Like To Comment On The Use One Space After A Period At The End Of A Sentence.
Sep 09, 2010

Over and over on these boards I read angry and disgruntled posts from MTs about how they feel it is only due to greed on the part of their MTSO, or due to some conspiracy carefully crafted by AHDI, that requires one space after a period at the end of a sentence.  One period after the end of a sentence is not strictly an MT standard.   Everywhere in media, print journalism, and academia one space between sentences has become the norm. This, ...
