Article About MT Credentialing - earlymusicus

Posted: Apr 09, 2011

I just brought in my mail and there was the March 28 issue of "For the Record", a magazine that was part of my AHDI membership benefits. I don't know why they're still sending it to me because my AHDI membership ran out, but I the cover story of this issue is "The MT Credentialing Debate: What do Medical Transcriptionists Gain by Adding RMT or CMT to Their Resumes?"

I haven't started reading it yet, but it should be interesting!

Q: What do MTs gain by adding RMT/CMT? - A: A hole in their wallets!

I took the plunge and sat for a 5 hour CMT exam thinking that it would be beneficial to me. I am glad I took the test in August of 2010 because now ADHI requires an RT test prior to the CMT. What it did do was give me confidence to break out on my own. Ive asked my local internists, family practice, vascular surgical groups, cardilogy groups how they felt regarding 'outsourcing'. Their reply was they were unsatisfied with the quality of reports they were receiving, which is not a surprise. The ONLY way we can provide the BEST service is to get to know our dictators, their nuances and for them to know and trust in us. We are knowledgable, intelligent, responsible professionals. There is no possible way for me to edit/transcribe dictation from a someone I rarely encounter... a facility I rarely encounter and be limited to only 10 QA submissions a month. MQ forgets who pays the bills; we pay with sweat, stress, and frustration.

Membership benefit??? For something anyone can get - For free?

For the Record was a membership benefit?? Amazing.

FTR is a free publication sent to virtually anyone who registers to get it. You might have to say you work in HIM, but that's about it.

And that's why you're still getting it . . . it has no relationship with your former credential.

That was my first thought too (sm) - Been there done that

For the Record is a 100% free publication to anyone who signs up for it on line. For AHDI to try to pass it off as a membership "benefit" is amusing. Just more of their %(*$#!

I've BTDT with those people, too. Just think--they have a whole new generation of unspecting newbies with checkbooks and wallets. My DH calls such shenanigans "Baloney Sausage!" A good term to stand in for the other (unprintable) one!

It's not actually free - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Advance was free, but they don't do a print publication anymore. FTR used to be subscription only. Now they only offer it free to HIM professionals in certain states, otherwise you have to pay for it.

For the Record credentialing article - Cindy

I read it. Basically it said that being credentialed doesn't get you much, but you should do it anyway. Actually, I agree with that to some extent. Ironically, I recently attended an ADHI-sponsored Webinar where they were trying to convince us to obtain all sorts of other credentials and were pushing scribe school, saying traditional MT and editing were on their way out. I actually think there is a lack of well trained, experienced MTs willing to work for what is presently being paid. It's a very strange situation. There is a glut of new, relatively inexperienced MTs, but a shortage of experienced, well trained MTs. I'm babbling this morning. Of course, the For the Record article includes information on how you can purchase study materials from the AHDI to prepare for the RMT and CMT examinations. I think it's a racket, but I also think if you're an MT you should be credentialed--just to add some credibility to the job.

credibility to a job whose pay has dropped - this much?

[ In Reply To ..]
I cannot imagine uncredentialed making 40,000 a year part time just 4 years ago, to having to be credentialed and making 19,000 a year part time. Just does not add up.

credibility - Cindy

My opinion has nothing to do with pay; it has to do with all the transcription schools out there (many approved by AHDI) who graduate students who are not prepared to do medical transcription. In the old days, most people who called themselves transcriptionists knew what they were doing. Now they don't. I don't like it, but I think that it is important to get credentialed with the organization (AHDI) that actually has hurt the profession by creating a glut of unprepared MTs who were promised 60K a year for doing very little. The credential at least separates real MTs from so-called MTs with an essentially useless certificate and a PC. It's an uncomfortable conversation to have, but poorly prepared MTs hugely contribute to the decrease in pay we have seen over the years. When a dictator is forced to spend 10 minutes, essentially retranscribing his own report, his opinion of transcriptionists in general is affected. When these low-quality reports are brought to the attention of administration, they decide that there is little reason not to shop price since they assume that the industry at large does not offer quality.

Credibility - Old Pro

I do not have the CMT credential and I made 45K last year. I do not work full time.
Congratulations. For Q, I made $28k full time - working my fingers to the bone.

I only want the doctor's respect and they don't have a clue about 'credentials.' Even if they did, I doubt they'd give a flying fickle finger of fate.

Best Credentialing Prep Course?
Nov 15, 2011

My company is offering an incentive in pay if I get credentialized, so I am going to go for CMT.     My question to all of you is which course is the best to take?  I see that Career Step, M-Tec, and Omniscribe offer prep courses, but I don't want to waste time and money on these if they will not adequately prepare me for the exam.  ...

Mandatory Credentialing
Oct 16, 2012

I was thinking... mandatory CMT credentialing might not be a bad thing.  I'd have no problem passing that exam, but would the Indian MTs?  If CMT were a requirement for ANY MT transcribing/editing US-based medical dictation, I think we'd lose our Indian partners pretty quickly. If AHDI could ("would" is probably more appropriate) make this happen, I'd gleefully pay CMT dues and attend all the seminars, etc. ...

AHDI - Mandatory Credentialing
Aug 31, 2011

AHDI is seeking public comments on proposed changes to its model curriculum. One of those changes is a requirement that ONLY CMTs be allowed to work as Instructors at AHDI approved schools. Knowing that the vast majority of experienced MTs (and AHDI members) do not have their CMT, we wanted to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback to AHDI on this subject. To see this and the other propsed changes to the model curriculum, click here: http://www.ahdionline.org/portals/0/ ...

Opinions Wanted On RMT Credentialing
Sep 10, 2013

I am just looking for some opinions on whether it's worth it to keep the RMT credential. My 3 years are up and I got a letter from AHDI saying in order to keep it, I need to take a course (which costs $100) and complete it before my credential expires. In order to meet that deadline, I have to sign up for the test by the end of this month so I can take it in October, which is also the month it expires. This month is the absolute worst month ever to try to come up with an extra $100!  ...
