mandatory credentialing - Des

Posted: Oct 16, 2012

I was thinking... mandatory CMT credentialing might not be a bad thing.  I'd have no problem passing that exam, but would the Indian MTs?  If CMT were a requirement for ANY MT transcribing/editing US-based medical dictation, I think we'd lose our Indian partners pretty quickly.

If AHDI could ("would" is probably more appropriate) make this happen, I'd gleefully pay CMT dues and attend all the seminars, etc.

No. I worked at a place where many Indians had CMT and was told they - are basically given those. I think

they had a joke of a test to past and then got the credentials.

IThink, if I had been told that, I would not have found it - credible. No plug for AHDI. Just not credible. NM

This was a small MTSO. They advertise here infrequently. - I had every reason to believe it was true. SM

Anyway, why would MTSO choose a lie such as that. Would think if she was going to lie she would play up how great they were and they aced the same test as US MTs. Lying by saying they were given the credentials makes her company and the ppl working for her look horrible. Would think she would rather lie and make them look good.

Credentialing - sm

My opinion:

I had a CMT years ago, when it was AAMT. I thought it meant something then, as did my employer, who paid all related costs. I got one of those little pins with an attached "CERTIFIED" thing dangling beneath. Hmmm. Wonder where it is. I never wore it...couldn't figure out who would be impressed with it. I think AHDI is a joke. Leadership is arrogant and irrelevant. For them to engage in political maneuvering in Washington, claiming to represent MTs in America, is simply ludicrous.

Now, if AHIMA were to undertake credentialing, it would be a whole different game. I would jump on board right away and consider it a point of pride that I could meet their standard. AHIMA is, in my opinion, not to be taken lightly; its influence and licensing are very well recognized.

In my experience, the MTs who continue to advocate for AHDI credentialing are those who have maintained their continuing education credits and paid the exhorbitant fees without recognition and compensation. I believe they resent that the majority of us don't bother with it, and our employers and clients don't care. I can understand why they feel that way, but I'll put my skills up against a CMT any day of the week.

I agree completely. - Des

We need a credentialling program that proves the skills required to be superior MTs. Otherwise, what's the point. I was under the impression that the CMT offered this. However, after reading the replies to my post, I'm not so sure anymore.

AHDI advertises that 2 years of acute care experience is strongly recommended in order to have a chance at passing the test. Basically, they were saying that new MTs right out of school wouldn't be able to pass it. If an American newbie couldn't pass it, how could Indian MTs who can barely speak English pass it? This is what I was thinking when I wrote my post.

If AHDI is dumbing down the test to accommodate the Indian MTs, then getting a CMT really does mean absolutely nothing.

OP, as it is an employer can have our skills pegged within an hour. - Those of our Indian colleagues, too. NM

They pass it just fine - Plexus lists CMTs

[ In Reply To ..]
Plexus lists the new CMTs in every issue (or at least they used to). I remember counting the Indian names on that list and calculating the percentage of Indians versus Americans one time(not very scientific, but it was interesting nonetheless). About 40% of the names were Indian.

Are they taking the same test as us, or has the test been dumbed down to accommodate them? - Des

Doesnt really matter. In the end, they have credentials and that is all - the employer sees. And since SM

[ In Reply To ..]
the facilities dont care about quality anyway, if any disparage the OS MT, the facility can say, but that MT has credentials, I had every reason to expect that MT would be great.

I don't know. Agree that it does not really matter - CMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I took and passed the CMT. I didn't find it that hard. I have OP note and radiology experience, and I was glad that I had that for the transcription part, but otherwise it was not that difficult. I went to MTEC, and there were a few people back when I went there who took it and passed right out of school. That was when they strongly encouraged 2 years of experience in acute care but did not require it. That might have changed, however. I know that now you have to have the RMT to take the CMT.

I have no idea if off-shore workers get a different version or not, but at this point I am so disgusted with MT that I hardly care.

AHDI - Mandatory Credentialing
Aug 31, 2011

AHDI is seeking public comments on proposed changes to its model curriculum. One of those changes is a requirement that ONLY CMTs be allowed to work as Instructors at AHDI approved schools. Knowing that the vast majority of experienced MTs (and AHDI members) do not have their CMT, we wanted to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback to AHDI on this subject. To see this and the other propsed changes to the model curriculum, click here: http://www.ahdionline.org/portals/0/ ...

I just brought in my mail and there was the March 28 issue of "For the Record", a magazine that was part of my AHDI membership benefits. I don't know why they're still sending it to me because my AHDI membership ran out, but I the cover story of this issue is "The MT Credentialing Debate: What do Medical Transcriptionists Gain by Adding RMT or CMT to Their Resumes?" I haven't started reading it yet, but it should be interesting! ...

Best Credentialing Prep Course?

My company is offering an incentive in pay if I get credentialized, so I am going to go for CMT.     My question to all of you is which course is the best to take?  I see that Career Step, M-Tec, and Omniscribe offer prep courses, but I don't want to waste time and money on these if they will not adequately prepare me for the exam.  ...

Opinions Wanted On RMT Credentialing
Sep 10, 2013

I am just looking for some opinions on whether it's worth it to keep the RMT credential. My 3 years are up and I got a letter from AHDI saying in order to keep it, I need to take a course (which costs $100) and complete it before my credential expires. In order to meet that deadline, I have to sign up for the test by the end of this month so I can take it in October, which is also the month it expires. This month is the absolute worst month ever to try to come up with an extra $100!  ...

Perhaps I should know the answer but I do not.  What is the deal with the move to EMR?  Is it government mandated?  I just picked up a good side job transcribing for a cardiology group in my community and it's projected to last only until they go to EMR..the move isn't happening too quickly...are there penalties if they don't move to EMR?  Who is driving this? ...

Anybody enjoying the mandatory overtime.  Yea funny how we are on mandatory overtime and then get an email that states that if you run out of work, you are required to email them and flex your time and can only make it up after 5 p.m.  So again, you are required to check for your work throughout the day and if there is no work, sorry for your luck and if you want to be "lucky" enough to be employed w/ Nuance, you will then have to sign in and work on your off shift to make up your hour ...

Mandatory Meetings - DSG
Apr 22, 2010

How can a company order you to attend mandatory conference calls and mandatory HIPAA training and mandatory platform training sessions and not pay you for your time?  Every time they send an e-mail for something such as this, they refuse to pay, even for an hour of time.  They tell you these meetings and conference calls are a bonus for you, and that they are saving you money by you not having to pay for them someday (do I look like I just fell off of the turnip truck?).  They mus ...

Mandatory Training Without Pay - Really?

Looks Like Mandatory CMT Credentials Soon.
Aug 02, 2010

Just like the post below stated, House of Delgates known as (HOD) from AHDI is wanting everyone to ensure patient safety and the integrity of patient records, all persons involved in creating, editing, organizing, or transmitting protected health information should be formally trained and hold credentials relevant to those duties.  To that end, AHDI should move forward with the support of its leadership in actively advocating for mandatory credentialing by whatever means that can be accompl ...

Mandatory Weekends....why?
Apr 09, 2011

Why do MTSOs require weekend coverage for every one of their accounts? I have 2 and have work up the yin yang during the week but come Saturday, I'm watching paint dry. My MTSO requires 1 weekend day, at least 4 hours. I changed my weekend shift TWICE to work during the "busy" dictation times and I'm still NJA. Now that it's getting nicer outside, I've got plans and wanna have a life again. The higher ups get off every weekend, why can't we, or at least rotate? I do ...

Mandatory Certification?

I was told by someone who attended a recent ICD-10 academy (for trainers) that the OIG is requiring all (current) coders to be certified by the October, 2013, ICD-10 implementation date.  I am aware of the OIG's compliance guidelines, but nowhere in that document do I find anything about mandatory certification.
