MedicalScribes - an article about them - MT Promises
Posted: Sep 07, 2010
This is an interesting article about using medical scribes to do transcription. It is a way for doctors to create electronic medical records and not have to enter information into computers themselves.

These are pre-med students working as scribes. - MT Promises

The experience is worth more to them than the hourly pay or benefits. It seems like a win-win situation for everyone except MTs.
Yes, I agree - GAMT

I thought that is something I would like to do, until I saw the hourly salary. I agree it is good for the pre-med students, but not for the MTs. Thanks though for the link to the article. It was interesting.

More Options - Hope

I remember the AHDI magazine Plexus had an article on this way back some time ago. It would be really great if this field allowed more options for transcriptionists to go into if the pay was right. I wish they would consider us for this opportunity as doctors already entrust us with their work.
Why would they hire skilled MTs for $20-30/hr when - Again, do not hold your breath.

they could just hire a nice kid who could type for a fraction? Those few physicians who'd be interested, of course. That article was essentially written by a company that markets scribes and is basically an ad for their services.
For docs serious about trying this, just hiring someone out of school with minimal experience to follow the doctor around all day for peanuts would be MUCH less expensive, especially if this extra clerk were just an addition to a practice with other employees, etc. Don't forget the doc's there to answer any questions.
It wouldn't work all that well for lots of physicians, though, including those on call at all hours, and for a number of reasons they'll be looking other directions altogether.
Ophthalmologist doing it that way for a long time! - old and frustrated

Just have a tech input everything in the computer or write it out. Saves on MT expense. I worked for the ophthalmology office and just did referral letters and op notes - the techs did all the clinic notes.

They seem pretty happy about having 28 sites in India and want to keep offshoring more of their work. I really wonder how many Americans, if properly educated about the whole thing, would really want their medical history sent overseas. I know clinics/hospitals don't care. They are using MQ and other services that offshore because they want to save a buck on services. Yeah I know, s ...
