The main issue you are facing by entering - MT now

is the timing, because the MT industry has basically been nearly gutted by the large MTSOs for their greedy profit motives. It's no longer a thriving career with good pay and good benefits. It has been a gradual downhill process, but no less a very painfully brutal one for many experienced MTs who still believe in MT.

Before the downhill slide began many years ago, I made the transition from Respiratory Therapy to MT very easily. My 2 years of training for RT plus on-the-job clinical experience in all areas of a trauma hospital, from the ER to the ICU/CCU, to med/surg, telemetry, peds, PICU and NICU, proved most valuable when starting out in MT. Dealing with doctors, nurses, and other ancillary departments in person and over the phone (accents and all) actually helped with my MT job. When listening to a doc dictating from anywhere in the hospital as an MT, I actually wasn't phased all that much with the background noise - somehow I learned to tune that out when working in the hospital. The problem for me with hearing dictation now is usually the poor quality of the voice file - static, volume too low, muffled, etc.

So, my take for you is the timing of getting into an industry that is fast dwindling down to nothing. No doubt you would be able to handle the general basics of MT, but it's all the rest of the work issues that exist now making it a not so very positive experience anymore - from pay issues to ridiculous job requirements which are completely unreasonable, etc., that I think would frustrate and cause you regret, Sam.
