To Sam, a noncondescending response ... - sm

I'm not sure what kind of provider you were, but can you do nurse case management for an insurance company from home?

How about those nurses who man phone lines for insurance companies?

Those are definitely better jobs than MT, although I'm sure you'd be a great MT. It's really not as complicated as some MTs like to pretend. Some ESL docs make the job a complete nightmare, some companies are a complete nightmare (like Keystrokes) but, as an independent contractor, you can refuse those types of dictators and leave companies that you see are not a good fit for you.

As an IC, you can really write your own ticket (I always do because I realize I'm a business, not an employee).

I'm sure if you tested with some of the companies and passed, you'd be offered a position. Some of the MTSOs are desperate for help now, especially the Nuance affiliates.

However, those companies attempt to make you work specific shifts so I'd avoid those. They also require the download of a VDI and your computer must meet specs.

Pay is generally $.07 a line, $.04 for editing, so if you can type 200 lines an hour (the average is less than this nowadays because some MTs simply do not type fast or are very distracted at home), you'll make $14 an hour. If you can type 300, which is rare nowadays with templating, bad dictators and very short reports, you'll make $21 an hour. I average about $15-$18 an hour, but I rarely have enough work to cover 40 hours a week nowadays, so not so great.

Work also becomes very low or nonexistent during the summer, around every holiday, and especially the week after Christmas.

There are no benefits (even as an employee with some companies they don't offer any benefits, but you will have the security of UE).

Some companies allow you to fill out an application and then subsequently do the online tests immediately without even viewing your resume (usually grammar/punctuation tests followed by an actual dictated report you'll have to transcribe and pass). They often have several short snippets to transcribe, one easy, one ESL and one difficult.

If you can't transcribe those reports or don't know how to handle sections you can't hear, then you won't pass and they won't contact you.

You can always try with several companies. There are lots of companies out there other than what you see here on this board.

Good luck with your situation. I'm sure this would be a good fit for you if you're okay with rather low pay (I still make a living doing this and am a single breadwinner, but my pay does not exceed $30K a year now, and it used to be closer to $40K about 5 years ago). I've never made the big bucks I see MTs speaking of here, but I've only been doing this 20 years lol.

Good luck.
