We Get Frustrated - see message

We get frustrated because people assume they are going to just sit down and do MT. But we don't need to be condescending about it.

I wouldn't assume to just walk into a hospital and be able to be a nurse, so I'm not sure a nurse (she didn't say what she is), or anyone else who has some medical knowedge assumes they can transcribe. Nurses have a higher level of sciences education, for sure, and a bigger understanding of disease processes, but they don't understand that not MT is not as simple as it sounds.

Formatting? Try having 15 hospitals, all with different formatting rules, then doctors so-and-so's want his/hers done differently within each facility.

I'm not saying we're better than someone who has intensive training in nursing, PA, etc, degrees and credentials, but please don't underestimate the difficulty of MT work. Just as I could not ever become a nurse (bad in sciences!), please don't assume you can become a medical transcriptionist.

Oh, and I agree with the hospital background noises. I'm quite certain it's hard for a provider to concentrate with all the distractions of a hospital, but when you have bells, whistles, people throwing up, goodness knows what else clanging in the background, it is extremely difficult to hear actual words.

And then there are surgeries you would likely be required to transcribe. Surgical equipment, unique terminology all its own, and all else that goes on with it (like someone throwing up after surgery due to anesthesia reaction), you are in for a while ride.

I could go on and on. I left the field several years ago for a very, very good reason. When I was averaging $20 per hour, I had fun. Then speech wreck came in (enter the dictator turning away to have a Superbowl conversation with a colleague and all of that showing up on your screen)--you can't fast-forward through it, you have to listen to every single word so you don't miss something. I ended up averaging minimum wage when speech wreck came in. OH, and if you don't maintain a ridiculously high percentage accuracy score, they knock your pay down for about 3 months while they do a word-for-word quality assurance on all your reports.

Just want you to go in with your eyes open if you decide to do this--which you seem to have done. I completely understand wanting to use your medical experience in an at-home job, but you may have to do something else from home that will pay you more and give you a lot less stress.

If you are a nurse, perhaps on-line nursing advice?
