Who has recently been hired by Nuance? - Suzy Q

Posted: Mar 26, 2012

I would like to know who was just recently hired and how was your experience?   I for one have been hired and am not able to start until my computer meets their requirements.  So I had to put in more memory and also bring my Microsoft Word up-to-date -- 2007.  Just hope this was worth the expense.  For some reason, I have a bad feeling about the job itself.   Hopefully my fears are wrong.

Let me know what you think.

Hired 4 months ago. Also had to upgrade computer and Word. Never did VR until now. Absolutely hate it. Takes almost as long for most jobs to correct everything. I could type faster. Too many accounts specs. Do 1 hospital, next job different hospital, different act specs, time consuming. QA people - marks something. OK, I do it that way. Next QA comes along and marks it back the way I did it to begin with. Who's in charge of these QA people??? I've had a Super Q tell me "I wouldn't have marked you for that".

It's fascinating to look at your stats - VR versus "straight"

[ In Reply To ..]
The VR is godawful, frequently with errors on every single line.

And some of it is too stupid like caps in the middle of the sentence for no reason. "The patient is Suffering from malignant Hypertension."

Or sentences all broken up for no reason: "The patient will. Be seeing his primary care PHYSICIAN next week."

...to say nothing of the fact that my account (actually, about 4 hospitals and ???? clinics) has different rules for every single facility, and you get dictation from all of the facilities intermingled with one another.

"Let's see - for this facility, if they dictate the name in the report, you're not to change it to 'the patient'".

"Let's see - this dictator is supposed to provide a signing physician. If she doesn't, you're to paint your toenails green, holler "My sister ate my Jello!", and staple your lips to the wall."

I can transcribe around 250 lph, but VR I'm often lucky to get into the 300s...for which I'm paid half rate for bringing exactly the same amount of KNOWLEDGE to bear on the document that I would be using if I transcribed it.

This is a KNOWLEDGE job, people, and we're being treated like FACTORY WORKERS working on an assembly line.

same here--maybe its because nuance is too big to actually care - - about their mts

I especially love the part about acct specs !! So true !!!! LOL !!!! It's a load of crap.
not to mention that QA determines what our take home pay is - what a CROCK!

Lizzie, editing requires a separate skill set added to what you - already have. You have just started, so of
[ In Reply To ..]
course you're not good yet and have a very long way to go before you can match those who've been editing for years now. Plus, as I've posted before at length, because editing produces so many more lines a minute than typing, every stop to look something up COSTS a lot more lines. Look up a couple of physician names or other items per report and an already paltry $16/hour can plummet to well below half that.

Are we underpaid for the work we do, including text that requires a lot of correction? Yes, definitely, but your poor line count itself is a result of your inexperience with editing, lack of such aids as a large set of correction macros you've created for yourself, and unfamiliarity with the accounts. Work on yourself, skills and attitude, since that's all you can fix right now if you stay in this field. Or get out, of course, and invest any training in something else altogether.

If you stay, and until you bring your lines up, though, I'd suggest postponing the urge to complain and instead spend that time stuffing your expander with sets of the correction keystrokes you do all day. Such as something that converts "due. 2. The" to "due to the" with at most 2 keystrokes (that irritating little goof is popping up in almost every report I do). These little tools will make you at least somewhat happier with your work, as well as your paycheck. Plus, if you're at all like I was, you really, really, really cannot afford to drag this learning process out.
Appreciate your help but..... - lizzie

I've been a MT for close to 30 years. This is my first experience with VR. I'm not sticking around for a year or 2 to work up to making $2 more an hour. I have a husband with a good income so I'm not too concerned right now. I just don't LIKE VR. I have office experience also so not too worried about finding a different job. I was venting. If I was single, I'd be out of this field in a heartbeat.
Actually glad to hear you're able to leave. That's - definitely the best course. Working
[ In Reply To ..]
for less than a high school grad with a year in an office behind her is a road to disaster for anyone who isn't planning to retire fairly soon anyway (me).
What about minimal line counts for FT and PT? - Suzy Q
[ In Reply To ..]
I see on pay rate incentives that 6,500 lines are the minimal line count you can make on Part-time. I am wondering if they fire people who are not making their line counts. I guess they do give you 60 days to make your line counts and also be 99% on QA. I am just wondering how many people have lost their jobs here due to the above.

I am one of the Transcenders just about to become part of Nuance. Mixing hospitals into the pool? I am used to doing multiple accounts, but not bouncing every other report. And QA that isn't consistent? So now I have to upgrade my equipment (likely), take a long training curve for VR, stress over constantly changing accounts, worry about a goofy QA dinging me, so that I can take a huge cut in pay? I'm getting nervous. Not a lot of options for me.

They call it "1" account..... - lizzie

[ In Reply To ..]
but it's not. I don't know how the rest of their accounts work, but the 1 I am on has multiple "branches." One job will be 1 hx. Next job will be another 1. Different instructions for EACH facility. Time consuming. I always worked on 1 account at a time so this blows my mind. And yes, QAs are goofy. I don't even look at my reports daily because it just sets me off for the day. I'm just biding my time right now, log on, do my job, log off. Otherwise I will drive myself nuts. This job like many others is not worth getting upset for.
Well, look on the bright side. SR? You're way late - hopping this train, so this
[ In Reply To ..]
opportunity to get on is something you really needed if you aren't about to leave the field altogether. The day will come, and has come at least temporarily for many, when people who don't edit won't be hired.

Not used to working more than one account? Multiple specs may seem irritating if you're not used to them, but it's no big deal and something you should be able to handle competently. Make some cheat sheets to refer to, with particular hazards or peculiarities highlighted. You can even store them in your expander so you can pop them up on your screen as you work. Also, I just matched my formatting and gram/punc standards to the most rigorous and use that for all, so I don't have to remember a lot of picky little details. It's not that many extra keystrokes to, say, number all medicine lists, and well worth it to me to be able to move from account to account smoothly. I also have all headings in all possible formats in my expander, all physician names I encounter, etc.

The real BIG problem you've got to worry about with more than one account isn't bothering to learn the specs but rather the possibility of not being able to build speed on one or two, three at most, main accounts. So far with Nuance I still have a primary that accounts for most of my workday, with a half dozen or so secondaries I don't spend all that much time on, mostly high priority and TAT problems. It works for me, but that situation was carried over from Webmedx.

Webmedx used to ask if you'd like to train on another account so you could work it when work got low on your main accounts, which is how I ended up with so many over the years. Overall, though, I'd recommend sticking to a primary as much as you're allowed, not volunteering to learn more than maybe two others and/or resisting being assigned to more. You're more valuable to the company if you can do more, of course, but line counts drop drastically with less familiar work.

BTW, companies actually use this device for lowering incomes, so being spread around too much is an alarm bell and cause to walk if necessary. The "happy" thing about being in that situation is that you wouldn't have to worry about possibly making less at your next job since line counts would already be in the toilet.
Good advice (sm) - LoopyMT
[ In Reply To ..]
Yep, I worked at a company and made the mistake of volunteering to learn other accounts to fill for the slow times on my primary.

Next thing I knew, I was constantly being pulled from my primary to "help catch up" the secondaries, one of which I despised with the fire of a thousand suns. There would be tons of work on my primary, but they were more concerned about keeping the TAT on that abomination of an account.

Biggest mistake I ever made was learning that account and, as a result of their constantly forcing me to work on it, I left for far greener pastures.

I don't mind helping out, but it had gotten to the point where I dreaded even signing in, because I knew the supervisor would immediately contact me and tell me to sign off and sign into the other account to help out "for a few hours." My paychecks took a beating, for sure.

Weird you had to do all that when their ad on this - board says

[ In Reply To ..]
They will supply equipment. I just read their ad yesterday right here on MT stars and it clearly stated they would provide you with equipment.

Hey, I'm just saying maybe you should - call them on that, if they

[ In Reply To ..]
put it out out there saying they supply equipment then, I would be bringing that to their attention. Why should you have to spend money to upgrade if they are stating they supply equipment.

I'm on you guys side here.

OP's question not weird,Nuance does not provide equipt for ALL their accounts - just the facts

[ In Reply To ..]
xx

We excuse me, I was referring to their ad - here on MT stars...see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
Its bolded and blue with astrix and it says:

**We currently have 30 positions available where equipment is provided!**

I took that to mean they provided equipment.
Perhaps you werent hired for one of those 30? - Just guessing
[ In Reply To ..]
I posted below, but I believe they were hiring many MTs and perhaps that particular 30 sets of equipment were designated for an account other than the one for which you were hired.

At least, that's what I assumed when I wasn't offered equipment. It's also possible that if we don't ask, they don't offer. If I hadn't already added memory to my computer and am ready to go, I'd probably email my recruiter and ask her if about it.
Listen people - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
First off, I am just browsing these boards. Maybe I spoke too soon. I read the ad and I took it has they offered equipment. I dont work for Nuance.

I was simply stating that maybe you should have called them on it, since they have an ad saying they offer equipment.

I know how much it costs to add memory to a computer and just added Word 2010 to my computer, Word itself was almost $200 dollars and memory at Best Buy would have been around $80.

Fortunately I found a better job and didn't have to spend any more money. I was'nt trying to bash or offend you, I was just quoting what I read in the ad.
Oh, no offense taken, just trying to find a reason - for equipment not being offered
[ In Reply To ..]
Glad you found something else more to your liking. Didnt mean to push your buttons when bandying about reasons equipment wasn't offered and my ability to not have to spend any money to upgrade. *shrug*

I believe it said equipment for 30 positions - I assumed those first 30 had been filled

[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't even bother to ask, since I believe the ad said equipment available for 30 MTs; I just assumed I wasn't one of the first 30 as they only had a few positions to fill for the particular account for which I was hired.

I, too, had to add memory but my Word program was okay. I just cannibalized another PC and stole the memory card from it and added it to my current PC and it worked fine and didn't cost me a cent (fortunately...good thing I hang onto "computer corpses," lol!).

I'm waiting to get my training dates so I can get started up. I'm looking forward to seeing the ins and outs of their training process.
