Does anyone ever get hired....? - Unluckee

Posted: May 30, 2012

Does anyone ever get hired from these companies who are continually posting help wanted ads?!?!?  I have applied to at least 15 companies posting ads for help only to sit here waiting for at least 5 weeks, so far, for an answer to any for which I applied!  I have been a medical transcriptionist for over 20 years as well as a QA worker for over 5 years.  My resume is on par with what I consider to be some of the best, yet I never receive an answer to my applications.  I realize there are many MTs out there needing a job in this poor economy, and I also realize companies cannot answer every application they receive, but I come to MTStars every day, and the same companies continue to ask for help.  It is very discouraging to someone who is, like most of you on here, willing to put in long hours and quality work, only to never receive an answer.  One company even said the test was not passed (which I highly doubt) only to ask if I wanted to pay $2,500 to join the training program they were apparently involved with (which I suspect is actually what the help ad leads to, not to being employed by them).  I just wanted to vent.  Thanx for listening.

I've been wondering the very same thing, myself! - Been looking 4 yrs! - Meerkat

I'm not applying at companies anymore, just hospitals. And I really hate it when you get told "The job has been filled", and then the next week, they're advertising again for the same position.

Yes - many

I've heard back from many that I've applied to. Have someone look over your resume for you and figure out how to make it stand out.

Agree with a good resume - and also making sure ...

That is easy to read - use bullets, etc. for each position. Make sure you have each and every work type that you have ever done listed under each position. Education is a must as is "skills" - under that I have my typing speed, platform experience, Stedman books that I own, QA% and accuracy %.

Also important - if you are serious about a job do 3 things: Research the company both here and on Facebook (to see if they have a FB page and how they treat their companies) and if it is something you really are interested in JUMP ON IT!!! They get swamped with hundreds of resumes. When you e-mail, make sure you subject line is unique.

Good luck! Got 2/3 jobs I applied for last week and really excited about them.

I really don't understand why - doubtful

so many people on here have been looking for a position for months. It's not THAT difficult to find a job on here. I applied to a lot of places and heard back from just about all of them. What are you doing wrong that you can't find one when I found at least 10 of them? Perhaps you should all revamp your resumes?

Wow, that was rude! - GrandmaMT

I have a professionally done resume, over 12 years of experience and have sent my resume to over 15 job postings, I have tested for 5 or 6, one said I did not pass, one I passed and they offered me a job but would not answer any of my e-mails asking for info about the company, so I declined their offer. The others I have had no reply from. Oh, sorry one did offer me less pay and a worse schedule than I currently work, so I just said no. I am currently looking outside the MT world in clinics, hospitals, etc. I thought about coding, but have been told by long-time coders that the possibility of getting hired as a newbie are slim to none in my area of the world and I would probably have to look in bigger towns 50-60 miles away. So "I don't know why its so hard to find a job" please keep your opinions to yourself.

I wasn't trying to be rude - doubtful

I've been an MT for more than 17 years, I won't settle for just peanuts for pay and ask to set my own schedule.

I mainly work the second shift, as there is always more work and people tend to choose first shift and include at least 1 weekend day without complaint. Those who work only the day shift and no weekends complain when they run out of work, but in all of my years of being an MT, I've only run out of work during the holiday slowdowns.

I am not certified, never went to school for this, but don't say that I can't/won't do anything because I'm not familiar with it, which means that I've had to learn new things (oncology, ENT, etc.) and to do editing (as much as I dislike it). I personally only find terminology to be different for basic 4 versus all of the other worktypes and if I look at it that way, then I'm not so adverse to learning something new such as oncology, etc.

I think the problem is that a lot of people limit themselves to the perfect 9-5, Monday through Friday schedule, won't take less than 9 cpl and insist that they "can't" do a particular type of report such as basic 4, ENT, editing, etc. because they don't like change and are afraid. There's nothing to be afraid of. If you've been an MT for awhile, you know what you're doing.

As I stated before, for those of you that are having difficulty, try revamping and updating your resume. You'd be surprised how many of them could use a going-over. It's also helpful to have a fresh set of eyes take a look at it.

If you choose NOT to accept a job then that's up to you, but to say that there are NO jobs out there is totally false. What you really meant to say is there are no suitable jobs out there for you. To each his own.

Getting off my soapbox now....

I've done this for over 30 years and I've done it all. Like you, I'm always willing to learn new specialties and work types and help in any way I can. I'm no longer a CMT but I did go to school for this. I'm considered by many to be an excellent transcriptonist. I currently don't have the "perfect" schedule as I've worked one weekend day for years and it's my preference, I have no problem working 2nd shift. However, I don't have a second income and having to pay part or all of my health insurance premium is going to take a big chunk of my paycheck. Yes, I'm looking for the highest line rate I can get out of necessity and also because I deserve to be paid more than a newbie, anything less than 9 CPL is considered peanuts to many people here. I have bills to pay and groceries to buy. Judge not, and you know the rest.

I agree with you completely and wasn't judging you. I'm fortunate enough to have health benefits through my husband, so that's the difference between us. I'm not sure why you chose to take my previous postings to heart, as they were obviously not directed to you personally.

10 offers? Perhaps you're selling yourself too cheaply? - n/msg

I agree to some extent, but have found my own job offers nothing - I would accept, sm

[ In Reply To ..]
So I am still looking and have been for over a year. I am still employed at my current job, but would love, love, love to find a job that I actually like. As the other poster said, there are many reasons for not finding a job and having 10 job offers for less money than I am making now is only one of them.

I agree - Job seeker

[ In Reply To ..]
Transcription jobs are available and I've also had a number of offers. I chose to stay at my present job but still continue to look. None of the offers were acceptable, getting affordable insurance has been a big challenge and most of the jobs would involve taking a big pay cut. There is much to be said in regard to selling oneself too cheaply and accepting any job only to regret it later. In regard to the coding training, I have also found those comments to be true. It is difficult to land that first job without experience, especially in a smaller community.

I really hope you do not dislocate your elbow from patting yourself on the back. Why assume the OP has done anything "wrong?" You don't know his or her circumstances. How about ratcheting the judgment down a notch or two?

Will I Get Hired?
Sep 06, 2010

I have a question for all MedQuist MTs . . . I called them and was told that I qualified and passed MedQuist's test. That was about a week ago. I was told that I am still being "considered" and "reviewed." One recruiter told me that it would just be a matter of time before they could get through all of the paperwork. Another recruiter simply told me my file was still being "reviewed." What does this mean? Does MedQuist always offer jobs to those that pass their testing? Or is it possible t ...

Just Got Hired!
Sep 27, 2011

I am told that I just got hired by Nuance.  Am interested in what people have to say about the company.  I have read that the first part of this month, they were running out of work.  If so, do they really need me? Also, am interested in insurance costs?  Some straight answers would be most appreciated. Thanks, Charlie ...

Too Old To Get Hired?
Jul 26, 2013

Should I stop saying I have 31 years of experience as a transcriptionist? I try not to date myself by putting dates on my resume, like when I graduated. I am 61 and will be 62 next June. I have not worked since March, but I made so little money that I get way less than 200 dollars a week from unemployment! I have applied everywhere, outside the house and inside. I have attended resume counseling at the career center, nobody is interested in helping me pay for any schooling, they change the s ...

Anyone Hired?
Apr 24, 2015

All the ads on the job seeker's board have hundreds and even thousands of responses.  Does anyone ever really get hired?  One of the ads wants someone to start "within the next hour," and that was a few days ago and it now has hundreds of responses.  Why is that ad still even posted?  Only rarely does a company take its ad down or post a message when positions are filled.  Do the other companies just not care?  Can it be that all those hundreds and thousands of ...

Newly Hired MT
Aug 31, 2010

Hello, I am new to the forum and recently hired as an at-home MT. It has been a year since I completed college MT courses at a tech center. The employer, saw my resume online. I have a p/t job that I've had for 2 years in addition to the MT job. Both jobs, are flex in hours, although the MT employer would like full-time. It pays 8 cents for every 60 characters. I would really love to drop the p/t job because it miserable in many ways. Can someone break the pay down in other terms? W ...

How Much MT Experience Is Too Much To Get You Hired?
Nov 15, 2011

I spent last week typing test dictations for transcription jobs. After typing five tests today for one company and then 3 more for another company I am wondering why I haven't been called back on any of these jobs. I have heard of having too little experience, but is there such a thing has having too much experience that a company is afraid to hire you because they think you will demand to be paid too much. Even though I have 10+ years experience I am willing to take 7 cpl just so that I c ...

Has The Q Hired A Flunky?
Jan 09, 2012

I've been getting the impression that the Q is paying someone to contest all the negative posts.  In the last week or so, as soon as something negative is posted it is answered almost immediately.  I do not think an MT could be working and still be immediately available to do this.  I've also never met anyone personally who defends this place. ...

Why Didn't I Get Hired?
Aug 27, 2012

I have been a MT for 30 yrs. I had to stop working 4 yrs ago due to health issues, then finally had 2 surgeries which pretty much took care of the problem. While I was out on disability I got a grant, went back to an AHDI approved University and took refresher courses in MT fulltime for a year. Now, I'm ready to get back to work. I submitted a resume to M-Modal last week and just read they are not considering me. Is there a way to find out why? I'm a good transcriptionist and I want to ...

What Are My Chances Of Getting Hired Anywhere
Aug 31, 2012

I have two years experience but my experience is not recent.  I did not graduate from a school or course, rather, I was trained by an MTE and by someone who had a general practice that they typed for.  Eventually I was able to take over the general practice but had to give it up because my husband's health was critical.
