Hospital workers (nurses, pharmacists and other techs) are union, but it depends on the facility. Teachers have a union and the screenwriters guild (AKA union) is currently on strike. If you want to go on strike without the backing of a union, try it and see how far you get, nothing is stopping you. Yes, I do know what I am talking about.
