I've known that for years, and that's why I had a Roth IRA when I was self employed and a 401K when I worked in-house. I'm really sorry you didn't realize that. I'm not so sure that your SS benefit is dependent on where you live and is more dependent on how much you made while you were working. Maybe California incomes were higher than Midwestern ones so that explains the difference in benefit.
