It is a point that all ICs should understand. You hired your contractor based upon her experience. She is the expert. You did not tell her when, where, how, and in what order to do her job. That is what the IRS expects in terms of differentiating between employee versus independent contractor. Life used to be a lot simpler when companies respected and treated their ICs as ICs and for the experience they possess. Companies didn't stand over them and micromanage them. In that they do today, well, unfortunately, these companies are opening themselves up to IRS scrutiny as well as it should be. Nick, you are a treasure! Thank you for your thoughtful posts. I truly hope that ICs are being educated for it is to their benefit to have a clear understanding of what their role is as an IC and what an MTSO can and cannot do. Keeps the stress level low.
