To high producers on M*Modal - wantingtobefaster

Posted: Nov 04, 2010

I wondered if any of you who are good at M*Modal can give me some good pointers on getting faster with this program.  I have been working on it for about 6 months and don't feel I am gaining any speed on it at all.  The whole thing for me is having to reattach the cursor to the highlighter that is giving me the most trouble.  It is just awkward and such a stretch to hit that F12 key to reattach each time I have to make a correction.  I would be forever grateful!! :)

TIA,

M*Modal - nn

Get rid of the highlighter.

If you reaching for the F12 key is too much of a stretch for you but you want to use the functionality, why not assign a different keyboard shortcut or hotkey instead of using F12? You can do this with AutoHotKey (free download if you search Google for it). It is pretty easy to do this. If you wanted to use a different function key, like F1, you could write a simple script like F1::F12. That will just make it so that when you hit F1 it is really like you are hitting F12. You could also assign a couple of letters, like zz, with a script like:
::zz::
Send F12

******

MT is getting tougher by the day and I wanted to share what has helped me increase my line count with others.

keystroke combos to quickie ones. Like, jump cursor to dictation point is "uu." Jump dictation to cursor is "qq." No remapping or reprogramming involved and super easy. All of the 3-key macros (CRL+SH+U, etc.) and most of the 2-key ones (SH+Home, etc.) have been assigned quick keystrokes in the center of the keyboard. Most require only one hand (uu instead of uf). The most important are the shortest (f to toggle case, z to drop a comma in backwards from the cursor, [ to increase audio speed, etc.).

I would love to do this, but we weren't given any info on how to assign quicker keys. How exactly do you do this? Thanks

There are about 3 ways to do it, actually, but the simplest is to record the keystrokes you use to make a common correction (find the "record" button and push to turn on), type the keystrokes, turn record off, and give them their new abbreviation.

For instance, my abbreviation to change a comma to a period and cap the next letter is .. (2 periods).

To back the cursor up and insert a comma then jump the cursor back to the next word is named z.

The one that replaces Home, Shift+End to highlight and delete a complete line of text is named pp.

And so on. Have fun. It's easy once you locate the record function.

I work on MModal. Just hit CTRL+SpacebarSpacebar (hit it twice) - reattaches the cursor as an alternative.

CTRL+Shift+Spacebar returns the playback highlighter to wherever my cursor is (after I make a correction).

Do it enough and it becomes 2nd nature. I don't even think about it anymore. I would never reprogram or remap a keyboard as it may interfere with other functions on the platform. At the very least, talk with your IT support before doing it.

With MModal, I just use 3 simple steps to make a correction:
1. Let the voice continue playing but detach the cursor.
2. Make my correction.
3. Reunite the voice with where my cursor is and attach the cursor to the playback highlighter.

So, the actual keyboard strokes when I see a necessary edit/correction:
1. CTRL+LeftArrow (make correction)
2. CTRL+SHFT+Spacebar
3. CTRL+SpacebarSpacebar

Moving right along ...

What is your lph editing speed?

Avg in the 425-450 range. Sometimes lower, sometimes higher. - reattaches the cursor as an alternative.

reprogrammed my keyboard yet, too much else has been going on to add the task of retraining muscle memory. I did ask teq, both formally by opening a job and asking and later by chatting with a very knowledgeable one when he was loading something for me. Info back both ways was limited. Apparently few have done it. There was some acknowledgement in chatting when I brought it up that reprogramming could cause problems, but overall there was no particular excitement or concern expressed. I did learn a keyboard layout sometimes won't "unprogram" if you need it to.
Tried the ctrl spacespace - wanttobefaster

Apparently, the IT department is the one who does the final tweaks to the program, because I tried the above short cuts and they don't work. (sigh) Also, I can't download anything to my work computer without permission. I worked on Editscript and things just flowed nicely for me on that one, but this one is just too awkward. Maybe I will get it eventually. Thank you to all of you who responded. :)
How about getting permission to download an expander, then? - No time like the present.

High VR Producers Who Do 400-700 LPH, Can You Say
Jan 24, 2010

I know some of you have taken a bashing, but I'm a believer and admire your skill.  I am curious about your definition of a line and how long you've had the same account(s).   I think most posters assume lines are defined at 65 characters including spaces, but that's not always the case (especially for those who work directly for hospitals or clinics, which many times are 60-character lines or less and include headers, footers, demos, etc.)   Can you give us an ide ...

Do Only The High Producers Get The Grand Treatment?
Mar 17, 2010

I have requested more work and have been turned down.  I have asked for another account and the same thing, turned down.  I have been switched over to cover many accounts and when asked was told that the high producers are working on other accounts and I need to switch to cover.  Every time I ask about anything at my company, the answer is that is only for the high producers.  I produce my required quota of 16,000 lines per pay with 98 or more percent accuracy.  I cannot ...

Regarding What Constitutes High Production -sm
Jan 19, 2011

Thanks all for your thoughts on the "salary/wage expectations" thread below.  I am still hoping to see more opinions on the subject, but there were some references to production and even "high producers," hence my query concerning what you all think constitues a "high producer" versus average.  I am inclined to consider 200 lines per hour as a good producer but not high.  What are your thoughts - understanding, of course, that all accounts differ in difficulty.  However, wean ...

Do any of you use it on VR and actually produce more b/c of it? I usually straight type and find on VR I do not really use my ex ...
