who are familiar with Bayscribe - Tonya

Posted: Mar 06, 2013

Those of you who are familiar with Bayscribe, did you find:  The spell check dictionary is void of many common words?  It also does not detect uncapped words at the beginning of sentences or spacing issues. The word expander locks up for periods of time so cannot create new expansions. It has horrible quirks that cause expansions not to work correctly (they just don't expand) , capital letters show up in the middle of sentences and do not cap where they are supposed to, and extra words pop out at the end of words (attached to the word in front of them). These are a few things that are problematic for me.  Is this common for this platform?  And, any fix tips appreciated!

I type in Word and cut and paste into - bayscribe

When I first started on Bayscribe I used (still use) Smartype and it only worked with Word programs. I just type in word and then cut and paste into the Bayscribe. I created a macro that selects the entire document and copies it for me and then all I have to do is paste it into the Bayscribe screen. It's pretty easy and I don't have to worry about the quirks like you described. PLUS, if you end up with another job, your expansions stay with you rather than in the Bayscribe server.

Smartype Question - Plus! - Tonya

Before Bayscribe we used another platform that contained our expansions that could not be used outside of it (like in Word). They were able to transfer our expanions (though many are missing and others are not right), so at this point, your method would not work for me. However, it sounds like maybe Smarttype would be a good investment for me. I could rebuild my expansions on off time and gradually make things easier for myself. Any thoughts on that idea?

Also, any other input from anyone using Bayscribe or regarding this conversation would be very much appreciated.

You might want to get Shorthand - left Bayscribe in 2009

Bayscribe is a basic version of Shorthand. You can get the help desk where you work to pull the abbreviations into a text file, then load that into Shorthand. It will work much more smoothly.

There was a problem with the spellchecker being less than perfect, so we emailed each other a "bad" list that we loaded into Shorthand. If it saw abilify, it inserted Abilify. I still have that and I call it "badspellcheck."

If you decide you want to get Smartype instead, you can still get the abbreviations from Bayscribe converted into a text file, then load that into Smartype so you don't have to start completely from scratch.
Instant Text is also an option - and you can convert your list

from Bayscribe into IT. There's a free 30-day trial too on their website.

The new Smartype should work directly in Bayscribe - Joe

Therefore, you won't need to cut and paste. You can check out how it works by downloading a free 30-day trial from www.Smartype.com. Please be sure to read the For New Users page.

A little confused - Tonya

Thanks for all the feedback, but I am a little confused by what you are saying.

I think something that might be a problem (from what I can make of what you are telling me to do) is that my employer also has added quite a few company expansions, many of which are conflicting with my own and causing problems, but quite a few are also client specific normals that we need.

I have used Bayscribe full-time for seven years and have had none of those problems. Do you think it would help to dis-install and reinstall it? It is somehow conflicting with some other software you have? Just wondering......Good luck.

It seems to be a company-wide issue according to the company trainer (who basically says we will just get used to the quirks).

I thought that seemed really odd, considering the level of technology these days (that a typing platform would be so hokey).

You would certainly think they would have addressed this with Bayscribe, but who knows!

I was going to contact Bayscribe on my own, but it appears from their website they only accept contact from the actual clients and not individual users. I might submit a form, though, and just see what happens.

Can you tell me where to check settings to see if I can correct anything myself? I found a few settings in the expansion editor but that's it.

Any further help is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much for responding. :D

You can find settings in the expansion editor, or if there is a problem with the player, click on settings up at the right of the player. It will say:
MARK INFO SETTINGS

Slick on settings. Those just have to do with the speed and footpedal, so may not help, but if you ever have a footpedal issue, that is where you go to fix it. What I think is strange is that our company uses BS and never has this problem. What OS are you using on your computer?
For Antonia - Tonya

I have a computer provided by our company. The OS is Windows ... not even sure what version, but I am guessing they must update them remotely (or auto?) so probably Windows 7. They mentioned that BS does not work with Windows 8 at this point, so I know it's not that.

I'm glad to find out that these things do not happen to you. That means there is hope (as the people above me basically told us we would get used to the quirks ... imagine that?!)

I am wondering if they have to pay money to get BS tech help and are just trying to have our IT people handle things themselves or something.

Is there anyone else out there using Bayscribe that either have or not have these issues we are speaking of? Any additional input will be appreciated.

Thanks much! :)
