Sign on Bonuses - Gatorgirl

Posted: May 12, 2015

Hi Everyone!

Just wondering if the sign on bonuses are real? It all seems kinda fishy to me. I have been an editor for 3 years now and was thinking about trying to expand my career and move to full transcription. I have been looking for different companies and jobs etc. I currently make .05 per line and it just doesn't seem to be enough. When it comes to the reports, I feel like i am pretty much typing the whole thing over again, so figured I could handle the full duty of the job. I am also thinking by doing this I may be able to get benefits, vacation etc. Is this really an option or just a tactic to get the job seeker to apply? I am just really new to this as the job I have had for the past 3 years has been my one and only. I appreciate any feedback or information on where you work etc. Thanks!

You won't get benefits, vacation, or 401K plan (basically all of the goodies) as an IC status. You only get those things if you are an employee, and from my experience as an MT it is very difficult to find someone willing to hire an employee. Almost all of us are ICs from what I gather.

Thanks - Gatorgirl

That's what I thought, but a few ads I have been seeing have been offering benefits, along with sign on bonuses, 401k etc., for employee status. (I should have been more specific). I was just wondering if they were scams or not. I am currently an IC. Just wondering others thoughts on if it was legitimate. Thanks! :)

There are lots of employees. sm - Anon

Most of us are not ICs, as the previous poster mentioned. The DOL has been coming down hard on employers using ICs and treating them like employees. There are a lot of companies who hire full-time employees and offer benefits, vacation, health insurance (not always that great though), and sometimes sign on bonuses (with strings attached). If you have questions about specific companies you see advertising, post a question about them on the company board; and hopefully, you'll get information about their reliability, benefits, sign on bonuses, etc. from those who work there.
Awesome! Thank you! - Gatorgirl

Thank you so much. I am going to look more into it. I think I can do better than what I am getting now and honestly by the time you get done editing a record you might as well have typed the whole thing out anyways with most doctors. Thanks again!

If you apply for and are hired as an employee you most likely will be paid MUCH LESS than an IC...from my own experience. I worked less hours when I was an IC 7 years ago and made triple what I now make per hour.... the only down side then as compared to now was I was always "on the clock" so to speak... I did not have a schedule so if there was work downloaded I had to do it, otherwise someone else would before I did. When I became an employee I automatically had to commit to 40 hours a week (when I was used to maybe 30), had to start clocking in and clocking out and asking permission to pick my kid up from school and things like that. I initially thought having vacation time accrue would be great....until I constantly had to use it to "fill in" for times when I was out of work or times during my "shift" when I had to take my kids to the doctor or go to a school event...then when it came time for actual vacation I did not have enough hours for a full week...after working ALL THE TIME.

The industry has changed a lot since I was an IC so I am not sure what it would be like now but from my own personal experience it was much better to be an IC...for me anyway.

I have really thought about all of that as well. I have a 2 year old, a 16 year old in active sports including a travel baseball team during the summers. I would hate to miss all of that. I agree with you as far as being able to make more. I always have work available. I make .05/line and I just don't know if that is a good amount or not for editing. I feel like by the time I get done "Editing" I could have typed the whole report out much faster. Maybe I should just reconsider a new place of employment or possibly ask for a raise. I have been with the company for 3+ years and have one gotten a .1 raise 2 years ago. I really enjoy my job. People are good, no one is hounding on your back and I don't really have a set schedule. Thank you for your input! I really appreciate it and I am definitely going to try to stay towards the IC side. I think you are right about the hours and work restrictions etc. Thanks again!

TSM And Bonuses

Seen references to TSMs getting bonuses for keeping in TAT.  Anyone know if this is true?  Seems like if they got us (and are still turning the screws), they are going to do something (probably sucky) to QA and QC, then perhaps the TSMs should be next.  We know they aren't going to take anything away from upper management. ...

Production Bonuses
Jan 26, 2012

I just received my first *denial* of production bonus in over 20+ years with 98.75% QA score. Every time I look at the payroll data and see...... BONUS:  NO.   I do a slow burn.  I'd like to know who made that judgment call that is going to affect my income for the next 3 months. I'd like to see my mistakes, and if they are legit medical mistakes then I will accept my *penalty*.  I do not want to think my QA score hinges on whether or not someone is having a ...

Xmas Bonuses / Gifts

Personally not expecting anything, just curious if anyone else was lucky.  Last year we got a cookbook compiled by various people in the company that we got to print off ourselves.  Don't think they can top that.  However, on the upside this company keeps me in work and pays well.  I can't complain, or at least I shouldn't.  Let's hear it from anyone who did get or will be getting a little momento in the spirit of gift giving. ...

Want Work From Nuance With Bonuses? Move To India.
Nov 11, 2012

Check out the bonuses for employees in India. My thought is the big N is making a move to transport as many MT jobs to India as possible (low work volumes) and employees in US are getting what is left behind. Home-based employees in India send reports to QA or Editor. If it goes to Editor, Bingo, maybe that's your job, correcting what someone in a foreign market cannot possibly understand. Makes perfect sense for Nuance. Maybe Obama will stick it to them with taxes for exporting our jobs so ...
