PT check $100 less than FT - Dunce

Posted: Oct 11, 2011

I'm no genuis, but I think I have to make some changes here.  My PT check for 20 hours was around 100 less than my FT 40 hour check.  I like my FT job, good accounts, great supervisors, but the lines just don't accumulate there like anywhere else I have ever worked.

Then I worry, what if the other company runs out of work or loses an account and I get laid off.  There is no security in this business anymore.  I guess, just don't burn your bridges behind you in case.    Seems like if you don't work for one of the 3 big companies you might end up there anyway with the next acquisition.

I am just tired of second guessing this game and am strictly going where the bucks are at the moment.

Sorry for rambling.  Have a nice day.

Keep both, switch the PT to FT and the FT to PT if possible. - NM

I've spent the last almost two years chasing full time jobs that had benefits. One job was a horrible, horrible decision, one job lost the account and I got laid off, the next job was okay, but just wasn't "it." You get the drift. All the while, in the background, was this great part time job that was just steady as a rock. The opportunity for full time work came up with the PT job and I prayed and prayed and prayed, and I just took a leap of faith that it would work. I cut the FT job loose and have concentrated on the PT, now FT job. Downside: No benefits. Upside: I've made more money in the last two weeks since I made this decision with the one job than I did with both jobs combined.

I always worry in the back of my mind about losing this job, but I have to trust my gut and my God and believe that it's the right thing to do. I know I'm more relaxed than I have been in a while. Knowing I can pay the mortgage and everything else will do that for you.

Only you can know what decision is the right one. Trust your gut, though. If the FT job isn't bringing in enough money, then cut it loose or switch things around. Good luck to you.

FT job IC position? I am wondering if this is the way to go for me also.

No it is an employee position - BTDT

[ In Reply To ..]
It actually was IC last year and I let it go when I increased hours at a non MT part time position. When I found out earlier this year that my account was going to EPIC and my job was probably going away, I contacted them again to see if they had any openings. They did and I had the option of IC or employee, so I chose employee. The FT job I let go was employee position and they actually had a really good, affordable benefit plan, but right now I still couldn't afford the benefits, so they weren't doing me any good anyway. And, honestly, benefits don't mean squat if you don't have a roof over your head and I came close to losing my house last year because of a bad job decision going to a company FT with benefits that just turned out to be a nightmare. I'm still trying to climb out of that hole, but at least the foreclosure law suit was dismissed.

Even if it were an IC job, I'd still have let the other FT job go. I just wasn't making enough. It paid marginally better than most VR positions, but I was doing about the same production per hour in both jobs and making 48% more at the PT job, so it was pretty simple math for me.

I personally think the increased percentage of deductions you get for your home for being a contractor instead of being an employee helps tremendously to offset the fact that you have to pay the employer's portion of the FICA up front. That's just my experience and my opinion, though.

The bottom line is I just trusted my gut. I didn't listen to the signs from God last year and I made a huge mistake and have regretted it ever since. I was getting a pretty clear sign that this was the way to go and I haven't regretted it for one minute.
What if you have a 1-room studio, and your - "office" is also your bedroom/kitchen?
[ In Reply To ..]
Don't you have to have a separate room for office use only, in order to be able to write it off your taxes?
Correct - BTDT
[ In Reply To ..]
You'd have to look at the IRS guidelines to be sure, but there may be guidelines for use of a designated area as opposed to a specific room. I don't know for certain as I have a room set aside for my office. Even if you only have the one room and you can't deduct the room, you should still be able to deduct a portion of your internet charges, etc. You have a whole lot more leeway as an IC than you do as an employee.
The problem is, whatever I could deduct from taxes - wouldnt even begin to pay for health-ins. nm

pay the tax-preparer, since the long forms are too much for my old, arithmetically-challenged brain to handle. ;)
I think by 'designated area' the IRS means detached office - like converted garage) from the house...sm

but on the propery with the house.

if within the house itself - has to have 4 walls or it is considered living space.
No - go by square footage. - alan

nm.
YES, you DO have to have a separate room for office. - IRS is very clear and stern about that.
[ In Reply To ..]
The square footage of that SEPARATE ROOM is only used to determine what percent of money will be deducted for the office portion on things that cover the whole house - like the electric bill. For me, 1/6th of my electric is office only, 5/6ths is living space. 1/6 of my yearly bill is written off.

You cannot have a studio and deduct 20 feet of one corner where your desk is and call it an office. IRS is very specific about that. Without the walls, it's living space.
That rule discriminates against those of us who - cant afford more than 1 room. (nm)

I don't agree with that, there has to be guidelines. - perhaps you can contact them. NM

Well, to the poster below in ESL garbage land, first let me say.  I too was in that same place 2 weeks ago.  An addition to my regular account, but it was all I was getting and NOT getting my OP notes at all.   The reports were not more than 20 lines usually, but I spent much, much time in trying to decipher and be FTR.  My CCM was very good about it, and told me it would be taken off and I would not have to do that account any longer.   Of course, I wish I had ...
