Lines based on characters with no spaces, throughts? - Montana

Posted: Jul 19, 2013

I just got a transcription job and am being paid with Word Count characters without spaces. I was told I would be making 9 cpl but when I figure out the spaces, it's around 7 cpl. Your thoughts on this please. Thanks.

If you were told one thing and you are calculating it out to be a different amount, I would ask the person that told you the 9 cpl to explain their calculations and how they get the equivalent of 9 cpl. Since it sounds like the job is being calculated by the character, I'm not sure it really matters.

Is this a typing or VR job? How many lines or characters per hour or day are you required to do? Do they pay for the demographics and add that into the equation? I guess a little more info about the job would help.

It is not VR. No requirements except quick turnaround. Yes, I believe they do pay for demos. I am concerned that I have other things to do and too and am not paid for these things. I am one who believes I should be paid for everything keystroke I do. Why not just say my rate is 7 and give me characters and spaces?

Yes, agree about the straight typing, should be getting paid for spaces since they need to be typed. I have heard of some places that do not pay for spaces but consider 50 or 54 characters a line. Do you think this may be how the are coming up with 9 cpl? If your demos are larger, that can add up too.

How many other things are you required to do off production? I can see needing to check the demos, but if they pay for the lines, I wouldn't consider that to be not getting paid. Do you have a lot of copies to add? Do they make up for it in other ways? My company pays you for most everything, but I do have to search for doctor's names and local nursing home names, etc. Would've been nice if they had provided a list with a lot of this info, but I have spent my own time doing this. There are so many other benefits that they offer, though, that I don't mind. First and foremost, they just give me a minimum and let me work whenever I want, and that is a super benefit for my circumstances.

Guess you need to look at the picture as a whole and decide if you want to continue. Is it a good secure job and you are a sole bread winner? Is the work easier than some of the total ESL accounts you can end up with somewhere else.

I would ask, though, if you were told 9 cpl but you are calculating it out to 7.

"Why not just say my rate is 7" - anon2

Because they'd have a hard time getting an experienced MT to work for 7 CPL for straight typing. That is low. I think it's very sneaky for them to hire an MT at 9 cpl but "forget" to tell you that it is without spaces (and, as you say, really equals out to 7 cpl with spaces). Makes me wonder what else they're shifty about.

Hi - just curious if this is PF. I noticed they had a job posting recently and was told their pay was "equivalent" to 9 cpl, but the actual pay was more like 7.6 or something. They said they paid on a 50 character line, so it "was like 9 cpl." It all sounded kind of fishy to me and the whole gig with the rest of the benefits, etc., seemed too good to be true, so I passed, but now wondering if this is the same company?

No it's not PF and I think it's done on a 65 character line. The files are very long and require a lot of proofreading. So I'm spending a lot of time not typing.:(

Do you believe some of the companies are taking the pay you would get for the spaces and pocketing it and only paying you for the character lines? I mean they are billing the practice or clinic whatever the lines are with characters and spaces both and then only paying me for the character lines with no spaces.

Would You Work For $0.05 A Line, Based On 65-characters With Spaces?

I have been offered a job with a company for clinic notes, which are the easiest.  As far as schedule goes, I just have to complete it w/in 24-hours.  So the kicker is, the pay is $0.05 a line, based on 65 characters with spaces.  They only pay once a month.  They also use Microsoft counter as well, which I am not sure if that is good or bad.  Would you take this position? ...

Line Counts - Umber Of Characters And Spaces And Divide By 65
Jun 12, 2013

Can someone help me out here ?  I have forgotten the purpose of this.  I work for a company that does transcription in Microsoft Word.  Of course you can check your line counts in word, but this company says that isn't right and we have to take the number of characters and spaces and divide by 65 and that is our line count, which is always less than what Word says.  Can anybody remember why it's different?  Thanks. ...

Is It True That FOCUS, Only Counts Half Of Your Lines When Calculating VR Lines?
Jan 30, 2012

Told Nuance Was Overcharging For Lines, Now Lines Drastically Reduced
May 02, 2012

My main account was a good one, and the lines were very good, mostly ER work. I have been on this account for over a year and a half now. We recently received an e-mail stating that Nuance had discovered that the line count was charging incorrectly, as instituted by them, and they had been crediting us with MORE lines than we were actually doing and overcharging the client. Now get this, they informed us that they would not make US pay it back, for their mistake, but that our new lines would re ...

Is Focus Infomatics Really US-based Now?

A former manager of mine from "brand X MTSO" (in reality, a very dear friend now) got thrown under the bus.  She knows how "QBay" does.  She is considering an MT or QA job for Focus Infomatics.  Focus claims to not offshore, and has offered my friend 8 cpl.  That sounds terribly lame wage wise for all that experience.
