Pay per characters? - mtinca

Posted: Mar 18, 2013

I have been offered a job where the dictation comes through in audio minutes. The pay they have offered is per every so many characters. Characters are easy to find in Word, but how do I figure out what that pay equals in minutes or hours per audio? Thanks to anyone who knows what I'm trying to say. LOL

I just ran a little test for you. I just typed a 2:56 report in 2:55 seconds (I speed up the doctor). It turned out to be a 30-line report. 30 lines in 3 minutes = 600 lines per hour. Lets say I was getting paid $1 for each audio minute. I would be paid $3.00 for the report based on how fast I can type. If I was getting paid 8 CPL for that same report, then I would be paid $2.40 cents for that same report. Back up now...if you type 300 lines per hour, you are getting $1.50 for that 3-minute report and if you type 150 lines per hour (average speed) then you would be paid 75 cents for that 3-minute report. If I am thinking straight here, lolol, then $1.00 per audio minute should equate to about 10 cents per line, IF you can type at the same speed they dictate. You have to divide after that. I think I am confusing myself now. If you tell me how fast you type and how much per dictated minute, I can tell you how much you will actually make in a minute. LOLOL Oh yeah, and after all that, you still have to take into account how long it takes you to get in and out of each report, which is shaving off more dollars/adding more time...so that 1 minute report might really take you 1.5 minutes..so you have to figure that in also. Hope this helps.

I had some time to think that through..lolol. I am going to pretend you are being paid $1 per audio minute...

If you type:
600 lph (=10 lines per minute = 39000 characters per hour = 650 charaacters per minute) @ $1/minute audio = Pay is $60/hour
If you type 300 lph/325 characters per minute/ pay is $30/hour
If you type 150 lph /162.5 characters per minute / pay is $15/hour

But you STILL have to factor in the time it takes to get in and out of the report and relistening to something or looking something up, etc.

To all you sticklers out there...sorry if there are typos ...I am working and rushing to answer this. :)

OK. I'm going to study this. LOL I *think* I get it. This is really kind of you to explain. I could never write this out in such good detail.

Thank you!

You are very welcome..no problem. The only thing I love more than transcription is numbers! It was a fun little break for me. Remember though...if you are being paid $1.50 per audio minute, those numbers get multiplied by 1.5. If you get paid 50 cents per audio minute, the pay gets divided by 2, etc. If you type 200 lph and not 300, divide by 3 and times x 2, etc. Then, regretfully, lower all those amounts when you figure out how much time to get in and out of each report.

Wrong Characters
May 15, 2012

I am desperate for any solutions to this problem and I am hoping some kind individual can offer advice. When I am typing in the platform I use, report will be going welll when suddenly the wrong characers start typing.  This does not happen in my own documents such as Word Pad.  The problem seems to be only in the platform I am using for transcription.   Has anyone experienced something similar?  Solution?   Many thanks in advance.   ...

I have been offered a job with a company for clinic notes, which are the easiest.  As far as schedule goes, I just have to complete it w/in 24-hours.  So the kicker is, the pay is $0.05 a line, based on 65 characters with spaces.  They only pay once a month.  They also use Microsoft counter as well, which I am not sure if that is good or bad.  Would you take this position? ...

Line Counts - Umber Of Characters And Spaces And Divide By 65
Jun 12, 2013

Can someone help me out here ?  I have forgotten the purpose of this.  I work for a company that does transcription in Microsoft Word.  Of course you can check your line counts in word, but this company says that isn't right and we have to take the number of characters and spaces and divide by 65 and that is our line count, which is always less than what Word says.  Can anybody remember why it's different?  Thanks. ...
