Forbes: The Best Jobs That Don't Require - a Bachelors Degree. SM

Posted: Oct 29, 2012

"A recent report by the McKinsey Global Institute found that while low-skill jobs are on the decline, by 2020 employers around the globe will need an estimated 45 million more mid-level workers who have a high school education and vocational training.

Meanwhile, a highly citedstudy by the Harvard Graduate School of Education last year concluded that in the U.S. “we place far too much emphasis on a single pathway to success: attending and graduating from a four-year college.” According to the report, 30% of the 47 million new jobs expected to be created in the U.S. by 2018 will only require an associate’s degree or a certificate."

No Bachelor's Degree? Ha! - Nancy

[ In Reply To ..]
#1: Registered Nurse. In Canada, nursing requires a Bachelor of Nursing Degree at a minimum.

I once had an opportunity to be a pharmaceutical rep. They liked me and I was able to do the work, but I didn't have a bachelor's degree. They didn't even care what the degree was in so long as I had one and they could put letters after my name on the business card.

Understand your discouragement, but please note - the growth projections in medical especially.

Anyway, "try, try again." Remember?

"The only time success occurs before work is in the dictionary.â

Yada yada. :)

Not discouraged - just sharing a Canadian point of view - Nancy

[ In Reply To ..]
I assume most of the information you get is for the US, and I wanted to share some Canadian experience. My previous post was created to state that a bachelor's degree is required for nursing in Canada. The second part of that post was a demonstration of a single job opportunity for which a degree was not required to perform the work, but the employer still required the credentials. Essentially, I was refuting the linked article, not moaning about my state. (I have nothing about which to moan.)

Please don't pass the trite expressions on trying to "cheer me up" because I am not discouraged. I have my own business (electronics recycling) and am doing MT to help make ends meet and fill my downtime because I can no longer lift 150 lb TVs. I got into the MT field because I love transcription. I know I will never make a mint, but I don't care. It will give me enough to help pay down the debts incurred in funding my primary business.

I find the quotation about success and work rather insulting, as is "try, try again." I have eleven years of post-secondary education under my belt and have been laid off seven times due to company failures. Did I sit around moping? No! I started my own company seven years ago and now I employ five other people.

Trite expressions just don't do it for me.

Let me apologize if you feel this is an attack. It is not intended as one. It's just that self-help platitudes really irk me.

Venting is now complete.
Actually, the article was puzzling - anon

Because I believe in the US a bachelor's degree is also needed for RN. In fact, probably a master's if you want job security and a good salary.

RNs - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
In the US, you only need an associate's degree to become an RN, although you will get better pay with a bachelor's degree. Once an RN gets a master's degree, he/she is mostly doing supervisor/administrative work only.
There are two-year RN programs, or at least used to be - but
[ In Reply To ..]
their graduates do not seem to be competitive in the current job market with fewer job openings. Those with a 4-year RN degree go to the top of the list.
In CA, that is true. Its as good 2-year credential to get if - your BA is in something else.

RN pay - Interesting how if varies
[ In Reply To ..]
Not around here in Northern IL. 2 yr RNs get 2 yr RN pay and there are more of them here than the 4 yr. The 4 yr cost more, hence having 1 or 2 on a floor and 3-5 2 yrs is more economical. With our last dowsize, some of those 4 yr went but not any 2 yr.

and that's the truth....yup! - anon

BUT....you must also have 15 years of experience in that garbage collecting job you are trying to apply to with your degree in anything. Any illegal aliens in the area??? Give it to them, so you are not "discriminating."

Oh, please. Go eat worms and leave others - to their delusions of something better. nm

okay....worms are good.... - anon

heard they are full of protein and "taste like chicken!"

Now go try and find a job outside of MT now without a degree, and without being an illegal alien...see how far you get.
no, I'm with you on that one. Was commenting calling their hope a - delusion. ironic. anon3

I realize the power of an education from being no higher than high school myself. I kick myself daily for opting not to continue my education in my youth, but there was no money.

Forbes: Keep Your Crown Jewels Offline
Sep 18, 2010

Below is a link to an article about phishing and hacking into CEOs computers but this could be extrapolated out to include medical records. After all, I think the privacy of medical records is important and since Forbes recommends keeping valuable info offline, it follows. Now, those of you would think you won't have a job of medical records are brought back locally, think again. There were will be plenty of local jobs out there and the big national MT companies won't be calling t ...

Why Would A Co. Require IE 7.0 Instead Of 8.0?
May 12, 2010

I got a call today from HR at Sten-Tel (Springfield) saying that they were getting ready to make me an offer.  (Would consider taking it on only in addition to what I'm already doing due to hearing issues about lack of work.) I was, however, told that having Internet Explorer 8.0 was a problem and that I would need to uninstall this version and downgrade to IE 7.0.  I've never heard of this before and was wondering why the newer, more current version of IE would be a problem ...

How Many Lines Per Day Does Your Company Require?
Jun 08, 2011

I'm curious, as this year my line requirement went way up and I was told what is required is "competitive" with what other companies require. I don't believe it is, and I work constantly to meet it. Does Command Health Require A Set Schedule?
Jan 19, 2014

I have a friend that worked at MD-IT prior to the Command Health buyout. She is still with the MD-IT division (or whatever they call it now), is employee status but is able to work whenever she wants as long as she meets line requirement and doesn't go over 40 hours a week. Is this the way it is across the board for Command Health? I thought I needed an IC job for flexibility, but if I could have that flexibility as an employee that would be great. Thanks for the info. ...

Time Outside Production - Isn't It Illegal To Require This?
Feb 13, 2014

New to Nuance, swallowed up when they acquired my employer at the end of 2013.  I see they really expect you to spend a lot of time doing things outside your schedule, training, reading manuals, etc.  Other than a flat rate for installing and learning software (20 minutes, actually took twice that), they don't offer to pay for all this extra time.  Seems excessive.  Has anyone tracked this extra time and filed a complaint with DOL about it?  Or tried to clock into W ...

Before all the Debbie Downers and Eeyores come out of the woodwork, let me preface these 2 ideas with:  These will not appeal -- or even be possible due to family commitments -- to all.  BUT they will be viable solutions for some.  Both are in the medical field and do not require extensive training.  1.  EKG monitor tech.  Requires just 8-10 weeks of training.  A quick check of pay for my region shows $17.65-$25.53 per hour, which is in keeping with what my em ...

Just Another Vent About Jobs, No Jobs, Requirement Of Jobs, Etc.
Aug 18, 2010

It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment.  If an employer can PROMISE IN ...
