Need help moving Favorites to new computer - Backwards Typist

Posted: Oct 16, 2010

My old computer's hard drive is dying quickly. I need to move all my favorites/bookmarks  from the old one to the new one. I've tried import and Export and it doesn't work.

I tried copying the favorites to a CD-ROM but don't know how to get them onto the new computer. I've spent all morning searching for the answer and trying to move them over to no avail. I tried coping the files from the CD-ROM to the new computer and supposedly it worked but I'll be durned if I know where they went.

Any help here?  Please, Please.

(A suggestion to those of you who know anything about computers. Keep updated on information. I kinda left my knowledge back in the mid-90s and it's been a struggle to relearn the ins and outs of simple maintenance!).

You don't say which version of Windows. You probably - SM

copied the Favorites folder from your CD to the Favorites folder on your new hard drive? If that's what you did, you now have a subfolder called Favorites under your Favorites folder.

On your new computer, check the main folder where your Favorites are listed. Delete the Favorites folder. Now copy/paste your backup Favorites to the correct folder.

Both computers are Windows 5.1. (sm) - Backwards Typist

my CD-ROM doesn't have a disk in it. I tried to import but can't figure out how to do it. It's looking for bookmarks.htm and even changing the name Favorites to bookmarks.htm doesn't do it.

I have a network set up from last year and this brings up another question. Since I'm sharing files, if my computer dies, will I lose all those files on the new computer?

It's late (for me) and I have been trying to figure it out all day. I'm afraid to shut down my old computer for fear it will not start up tomorrow.

First, I would print them out. What is Windows 5.1? Are you running - Carol

Windows XP? Or are you talking about Word Perfect 5.1? I do not know what 5.1 is? Do you use Word or WordPerfect?

Internet Explorer version ___?

You should be able to move the favorites file from the CD to the new computer. Do you know the location in your computer where the favorites are located. If so, you should be able to copy and paste to the same location in the new computer.

I do not believe you will lose any files in the computer you are networked to. Whatever files are in that computer will stay until you delete them or HD crashes. Each computer is separate even though they are networked together with file sharing.

Hope some of this helps.

At least I hope so. I started fresh yesterday. I did get all my important files moved over to the new one. Checked about 10 times without the old computer being turned on.... that is, unless the new computer still pulls the files from the old one even though it's turned off. I hope that's not the case.

Like I said in my first message, I'm not up on technology since the early 90s. Too busy working then and not enough time in the day to keep learning. :-(

Transcend Plays Favorites Big Time
Dec 04, 2009

Why are these managers playing favorites?  Don't they think that some of us know our teammates and talk to them?  Just as an example, one of my teammates got a birthday gift, but some of the rest of have never even gotten a birthday card or note saying happy birthday.   Some get thank you letters if they spell a word right and the rest of never even get a thank you when we have worked hours to help get an account out of trouble.  And this is by the same manager.&nbs ...

Change From Company-provided Computer To Own Computer
Aug 04, 2011

I am in the process of transitioning jobs and will be going from a company-provided computer to my own.  Any suggestions on what software programs are needed, virus protection, word expanders, line counting, and hardware like foot pedal?  The hospital I am looking into will be using Microsoft Word.  Any comments on whether this is a good program or not to transcribe on?  Any tips?  I have been with the same company for 15 years, so have been out of the loop and need ...

Moving On.........
May 27, 2011

I'm not very happy with my current company due to the loss of several benefits, cost of living pay, etc. and thought about checking out some larger companies, but after reading posts for a lot of major companies, I think I'll stay where I am. At least I have work 90% of the time and I'm paid 8 to 9 cents per line. The grass isn't always greener. :)   ...

Moving Practice To EMR.
Dec 22, 2009

I received a call today from a doctor that I know.  His practice is switching over to EMR, and he wants someone to coordinate that transition.  New patients are easily entered into the system, but he has a temporary need to get the old records into the EMR system.  His office staff is too busy to add this big job to their workload, and I think he correctly determined that he needs someone who can read the old office records, understand them, and then extract the info that needs to ...

FIRED FOR MOVING
Sep 02, 2010

I was recently fired from my MT position because I moved to a different state. I was a full-time employee. I was never informed of such a policy and had actually moved to this state a few years ago when working with the same company. This was apparently a new policy they had come up several months ago. The kicker is that I informed my supervisor of my move and even provided my address and nothing was said until I moved. ...

Moving From DQS To BeyondTx

Moving On After SoftScript
Feb 07, 2013

I, too, was one of the "account specific victims" at SoftScript.  I was fired for a QA score of 90%.  This score was from 100% account specific errors (same error over and over in four different reports).  Rather than counting one formatting or specific error, they dinged me over and over, making my QA score 90.4%.   My question is, when applying for future jobs, if they call SS for a reference, will they tell them that my QA score was that low?  I have never in my 20 y ...

Moving From EScription To M*Modal

Moving Cursor In EXtext

Moving Lengthy Autocorrects Between Computers
Jul 23, 2011

I have run into this problem every time I have to switch to a new/different computer.  In Office 2003 I save autocorrect entires with the first four initials of the docs last name containing their usual physical exam spiel or sometimes a sample of their entire report.  There seems to be no limit to how many autocorrects can be saved or how long the save can be.  The problem comes when trying to move them to a new computer.  Does anyone have experience with this problem t ...
