Moving on to a non-MT job opportunity - HangingInThere

Posted: Apr 30, 2015

I am pleased to say I have found an open door to a job opportunity that is outside of MT work.  It is a job that will utilize my experience in healthcare and my medical terminology.  A very nice pay increase, regular holidays off with pay, and vacation and sick time. No weekend work. Most importantly, a new skill set that makes my more marketable opening up more future opportunities as well. I hope this encourages some of you to see what is out there.  Submitting a resume or filling out an application does not commit you to anything.  It is worth a shot to see what you find.  I think for most, you will be pleasantly surprised that what MTs make now days is easily matched by many entry level positions.  It could take a lot of time and patience before you start hearing back from prospects, all the more reason to start now.  I am not saying I am not nervous and a little anxious considering I have been sitting in my MT chair for almost 2 decades, but even my family said that the struggles associated with having me home as an MT outweighs the benefits.  They don't want to see me stuck at my computer for hours stressing over QA/QC standards. They don't want me having to flex so I can make enough money.  They want me off on Christmas and Thanksgiving so I can share time with them. They want to see me happy. It will undoubtedly be an adjustment for all of us, but an adjustment I believe will be well worth making.

Just wondering what field you are going in to that will use your current knowledge? Others of us trying to get out could certainly use some insight! We have all been so berated and belittled and paid as if we are so insignificant, it is hard to muster the self-esteem to try to find another job....especially out of our field. Good luck to you!

Working at a hospital - HangingInThere

[ In Reply To ..]
I will be working in a hospital in a patient services position. I did find other opportunities at urgent care centers for front office and registration, medical receptionist positions, release of information coordinators, healthcare database coordinators, medical office assistant jobs. I checked every possible job/career site, local ads, local hospitals, state jobs, VEC listings. You name it, I was on it. There were plenty I did not hear from, but there were also a nice handful that were willing to train because of my medical terminology experience. Some non-healthcare type opportunities I qualified for were a customer service rep, call center rep, and even some banks. Just got to keep the mind set it doesn't hurt to submit. And always tweak your resume to reflect each position. Hope this helps. As I was submitting this message I was receiving a call for a 2nd time from an urgent care center that I had already said no to because I had accepted this other position.

I agree with the poster - about changing

your resume. I did that for each position. If it is for a specific job like cardiology reception, put on your resume that you typed cardiology reports and list them. That makes a difference. I did this and am out of here as well also in the healthcare field. With the knowledge we have, we are useful in the healthcare setting. I found my job on Indeed.com. Good luck searching!

Perfect timing! - Gotta be positive

Thanks for sharing this today! Just submitted application for a non-MT job, first in about 30 years! Nervous, excited, but know there is something out there better! Best wishes in your new career!

Congratulations! Very happy for you. - nm

Yes, it's different going in and working but the upside is so huge from what you're describing.

Work will stay at work. Family time will be so much better because you're not worried about your accounts being empty or how long you're going to have to work to make your line count.

The social contact alone is worth it. Congratulations on getting out! I look every day and one day I'll be saying the same thing.

Thank you, and I fully believe that as well. :) - HangingInThere

Several MTs I know have already made the switch - Moving Forward

[ In Reply To ..]
Several MTs I know are already either getting ready to graduate or are already working as coders. The money is good. It also doesn't hurt your back, your shoulders, your hands, or your self-esteem.

The pressure lifted the moment the decision was made - Agree

[ In Reply To ..]
All of the pressure from feeling trapped disappeared just from knowing there was a way out. Just 9 to 12 months of training and a real return on investment. I recommend to everyone that they start working toward a new career goal. Once you make the mental switch, everything gets better. Once you graduate and get your credentials, you wonder what took you so long to decide to do it. Whatever career you go into though, don't do it halfway and end up wondering why you can't get anyone to give you a chance to show what you can do. That puts you in an even worse position than before. Doing it the right way is worth spending a little more time on training and being able to pass the CCS, using coding as an example, because most people don't do it that way and it sets you above the crowd. I know that from experience. I know people who tried shortcuts with training. That's a false economy and gets you nowhere. Good luck in whatever career you decide to switch to. Whatever it is, get the best training you can and go for it.
Relief to body pain and physical exhaustion too with coding vs MT - nm

I have also moved on to another non-MT opportunity. I am making sales calls from home for a local home improvement company. It is commission only but I can set my own hours and still be available during the day if grandkids need me. I just started a month ago so have no idea if this is longterm or not. I used to be a radiology MT but my company sold us out just like all the rest of them. I so wish it could go back to how it used to be when we were actually respected - but time marches on and we must do the same. I wish everyone good luck in getting out of this now so-disappointing profession.

If You Had This Opportunity Come Up,
May 06, 2011

If you were working for a national, and making less than minimum wage, but had plenty of work and basic health insurance, would you take a per-diem inhouse job that paid 5 times what you were making now, but had no benefits, and meant a very long commute?  I'm thinkin' about it, but with gas headed toward $5/gallon, I'm not so sure.......... ...

Possible Job Opportunity
Feb 10, 2014

Our local hospital has a new position for HIM Clerk to review medical reports for accuracy.  This pays twice what I was making as an editor for a service.  I wonder if this will be the trend, to create new in-house positions in HIM for editing.  Perhaps another endeavor that will not end up saving them money or improving accuracy over what their service is providing?  Perhaps someday the bean counters will realize they could drop one millionaire CEO to gain 250 experienced e ...

Missed An Opportunity?
Oct 19, 2011

Just wondering if anyone has missed a job opportunity by not responding right away to a potential employer. I got an email yesterday around 3 p.m. asking to interview with me and I responded around 5 p.m. and have now heard nothing back. Just wondering if I missed my window? Would they go with someone else just because they were available in that 2-hour window? I really, really, really want this job and am just making myself sick over the possibility I may have missed my opportunity. ...

Great Opportunity?
Nov 12, 2013

I am a former MT (laid off) who worked for a University teaching hospital for 16 years doing transcription. After Nuance took over I took a job at the same University teaching hosp. doing outpatient clerk position. I am thinking of enrolling in classes for coding because this hospital has a coder training program that starts you at over $19 an hour, just have to be enrolled in school to apply for the job. They do training classes as part of your work day and then you study on your own to get cer ...

Amphion Opportunity
Mar 10, 2015

I have a question about Amphion.  I applied to them last summer, and I ended up taking another position.  Now, I am looking for work again and tested for them again.  The benefits email I received when I first applied to them had OUTRAGEOUS costs for the health insurance - are they still like that?  Which insurance do they offer - still Humana? Cee ...

An Opportunity I Was Presented With
Jun 15, 2015

Hi all,  I need some advice.  I am currently a medical transcriptionist and I applied for a job at a local billing company as an administrative support for the coding department.  The pay was 13.00 an hour and it was about 33 miles from where I live, so I declined on that offer.  The HR lady had told me during the phone conversation the day I declined that because of my background in transcription she asked if I would be interested in coding if a spot opened up, which she sa ...

Golden Opportunity For Hospitals Right Now!
Nov 11, 2010

As we all know, thanks to the way most MTSOs operate, there is currently a glut of experienced, talented, highly-qualified MTs who are looking for something better than just a chickenfeed job at a national.       Some hospitals have begun to question the quality of work they're getting back from the nationals (and the HIPAA compliance), since ever-increasing amounts of the work those nationals have is getting offshored.    & ...

Does Your Company Offer Advancement Opportunity?
Feb 06, 2013

I am curious as to ways transcriptonists (of employee status, not ICs) might be advancing in their transcription careers other than being paid incentive line rates. I am thinking long-term. Do any of you get raises? If so, what kind? Are you paid per the line or hourly? Are there different levels of transcription in your place of employment with different pay scales? Do you make different rates for different dictators or work types? Are there any other kinds of advancement opportunities avai ...

Moving On.........
May 27, 2011

I'm not very happy with my current company due to the loss of several benefits, cost of living pay, etc. and thought about checking out some larger companies, but after reading posts for a lot of major companies, I think I'll stay where I am. Moving Practice To EMR.
Dec 22, 2009

I received a call today from a doctor that I know.  His practice is switching over to EMR, and he wants someone to coordinate that transition.  New patients are easily entered into the system, but he has a temporary need to get the old records into the EMR system.  His office staff is too busy to add this big job to their workload, and I think he correctly determined that he needs someone who can read the old office records, understand them, and then extract the info that needs to ...

Anyhow, I finally finished my bachelors in Sociology, I have all these medical terminology experie ...

FIRED FOR MOVING
Sep 02, 2010

I was recently fired from my MT position because I moved to a different state. I was a full-time employee. I was never informed of such a policy and had actually moved to this state a few years ago when working with the same company. This was apparently a new policy they had come up several months ago. The kicker is that I informed my supervisor of my move and even provided my address and nothing was said until I moved. ...

Moving From DQS To BeyondTx

Moving On After SoftScript
Feb 07, 2013

I, too, was one of the "account specific victims" at SoftScript.  I was fired for a QA score of 90%.  This score was from 100% account specific errors (same error over and over in four different reports).  Rather than counting one formatting or specific error, they dinged me over and over, making my QA score 90.4%.   My question is, when applying for future jobs, if they call SS for a reference, will they tell them that my QA score was that low?  I have never in my 20 y ...
