Moving On - what is your new career

Posted: Aug 22, 2012

This is a question for those MTs who have decided to move on to another career. I am just wondering what you decided to do? How has it gone? Just curious about what MTs have moved on to and what could possibly be in my future. TIA!

I'm moving on - sm

I am almost done with my Associate's degree in Health Information Technology, which will allow me to sit for the RHIT. What I've discovered about myself through this process is that I love the medical field, but I would rather do a job where I'm helping people. I've decided once I finish the HIT program and get my RHIT and hopefully get a job in the HIM department somewhere I will then go back to school and change my program completely. I'm looking into social work, psychology, human services or some type of counseling. I'm 35 years old, so I've got a lot of years left in the working world, and I want to do something I love.

I think we all have several careers in our lifetime. I have chosen to learn coding, but since I need $$ now and can't find an MT position, I am working in the health and nutrition field doing dinner shows and demonstrating cookware. It's an IC position and based on commissions, but at least it's fun and I'm meeting new people!

Medical secretary (who also does medical transcription).

Piano Teacher - Elssa

[ In Reply To ..]
I started making these piano instructional videos a few years ago.. Not much money so far, but I'm planning to expand on them now. The medical transcription/health field is interesting to me, but music has always been the main love of my life. I majored in music in college and really enjoy teaching, even though it's not very lucrative. I refuse to charge what other piano instructors charge, though. Most charge at least double what I charge for my videos, as well as for private instruction (about $70 or more an hour). Most people can't afford that these days.

Playing the guitar is my saving grace. I lost my job last week and don't have a clue where I am going and am very depressed. I want out of medical transcription. It plays mind games and you are always in limbo wondering if you will keep the work. Next week I am going to help teach young kids how to play the guitar who cannot afford lessons.

That's very nice of you. Yes, music definitely helps keep my mind off my MT troubles - nothing like music therapy. Don't make much money from it, but it helps maintain my sanity, what's left of it. lol Love guitar music. :-)

Best of luck to you!

I decided to - do hands on medical

[ In Reply To ..]
I just started a surgical technology program at a local technical college. I know that's really different from MT! I don't think I could have done surgical technology in my 20s, but now I feel like I have the maturity and life experience to do it, plus I have very good health and endurance. I LOVE it so far! Certification actually means something in my new field, too. My hope is to be able to do a medical/surgical mission trip at some point in the future (in addition to having a new job of course!).

I SO envy you! - just me

You are so very lucky. I wish you the best luck in your new endeavor and am totally jealous!

I went to every dissection lab in AP I could attend and loved dissection. You are so very lucky. I am disabled and cannot work outside of the home, but if I could, it would be doing this. Lucky you!

Warmest wishes!

Thank you - very nice of you to say

I can't tell you how excited I am to be in this program. MT is helping me a lot, too. I am a step ahead of a lot of my classmates, even the ones who have been EMTs. I am actually really enjoying getting out every day instead of staying at home, too.

I wish you the very best as well. Thanks again for the warm wishes!

Radiology technology - 4vrtpng

Starting the rad tech program at my local community college in just over 2 weeks. Had to take anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 over the summer. That was a lot of fun, not. Now for the next 2 years of going to school full time and working full time. Will be worth it in the end. It will probably triple my income, at least, and I will be able to certify in many other modalities, like CT scans, MRIs, etc.

Can't wait.

Already moved to RHIA (informatics) via coding - While working full-time

[ In Reply To ..]
Started with coding. While working full-time, I did a postbaccalaureate certificate for the RHIA.

Can you give details - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
Can you give me more information about your postbaccalaureate certificate for the RHIA? I have a bachelor's degree but not in HIM. Can you do the certificate program if you have a degree in a non-related field?

Postbaccalaureate Certificate in HIA - Options for RHIA

[ In Reply To ..]
The postbac option is kind of hard to find on the AHIMA website, but it is there. It is only a sentence or two. If you have a bachelor's, you can qualify to sit for the RHIA exam by completing a postbacc certificate from a CAHIIM-accredited HIM/HIA program. They do not maintain a list of them, so you have to check every program website until you find them.

There are only a few of them. Last time I checked, most required 2 to 2+ years of credits. The one at the Unversity of Toledo, though, is faster. Look on their website. Try searching for "CHIA." Distance students get in-state tuition rates. It is a good program. I does not matter what your degree is in.

If you cannot get into it because your degree is not recognized by them, or if you simply want to do informatics, the informatics RHIA program at Western Governors University is a sensible option. They have a 100% pass rate on the RHIA exam and their students graduate with IT credentials, too. It can be an extremely good bargain considering that you can accelerate your completion rate without paying more.

Thank you! - OP

Thank you so much for sharing! I have actually looked into the informatics program at WGU (it looks like a really great program and a good bargain too) and am still researching and trying to decide on where to go from here.

Would like more info too please - MT

I am learning coding now and plan to go for the postB certificate once I get a coding job. I do have a bachelor's degree in computers, but from the early 90s. How hard was it working full time and how long did it take? Thanks for responding and leading the way for the rest of us. It helps to see others getting out of this field and being successful.

How long it took - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The postb. at UToledo takes about a year full-time. If you already know coding, then the coding courses will not be difficult. Other material will seem easy encough, too, because you are not approaching it from scratch.

Since I did mine, they have added prerequisites in A&P. That might add a bit to some timelines, but since the program is about half the length of other postb programs, who also have those prerequisites, you can still finish UT in half the time other schools would take. Plus, UT is not a for-profit diploma mill, so you won't graduate with people looking down their noses at you.

If you already have a degree in computers, you're going to take to informatics easily. If I were you, I would check with Western Governors University about their informatics program. It leads to the RHIA. Since their cost and timeline depends on you and how much progress you can make each term, you stand good chance of being able to complete that program in not terribly long and possibly at lower cost. They are knowledge and competency-based, rather than locked into 4 courses a semester and sitting in a chair for 3 clock hours a week per course. You would not be starting at the bottom with the computer stuff, nor with the coding.

What I'm trying to tell you is that you should not look at their program and think "4 years." It can be done in less than 4, and with your background possibly in considerably less, and possibly in about the same length of time that UT would take with the prerequisites and not being able to take a full schedule due to courses not beign offered that semester, etc.

I also think it may be possible to get more done with WGU than traditional programs because WGU seems to be far less focused on time-filling busy-work. They focus on learning. They also have an advantage in that their pass rate on the RHIA is, apparently, 100%. Compared to traditional programs, that is remarkable. My guess is that after WGU, you can test and pass right away, but with other programs you might have to take a semester or a year to study for the exam and then have a good chance of flunking the first time anyway.
Going to be a full-time student as of today... - xxx

Taking classes at my local college...will be able to sit for the LPN exam in December, then 1 more year to get my ADN degree and hopefully plan to pass the RN license exam.

I will say that my MT experience has put me at a great advantage, not just with anatomy/physiology, but also with pharmacology and my clinical rotations. It was always fun to see the surprised look on my instructor's face when she would ask if we knew what BNP levels indicated in lab values or what an ERCP exam was. : P

Moving On.........
May 27, 2011

I'm not very happy with my current company due to the loss of several benefits, cost of living pay, etc. and thought about checking out some larger companies, but after reading posts for a lot of major companies, I think I'll stay where I am. At least I have work 90% of the time and I'm paid 8 to 9 cents per line. The grass isn't always greener. :)   ...

Moving Practice To EMR.
Dec 22, 2009

I received a call today from a doctor that I know.  His practice is switching over to EMR, and he wants someone to coordinate that transition.  New patients are easily entered into the system, but he has a temporary need to get the old records into the EMR system.  His office staff is too busy to add this big job to their workload, and I think he correctly determined that he needs someone who can read the old office records, understand them, and then extract the info that needs to ...

FIRED FOR MOVING
Sep 02, 2010

I was recently fired from my MT position because I moved to a different state. I was a full-time employee. I was never informed of such a policy and had actually moved to this state a few years ago when working with the same company. This was apparently a new policy they had come up several months ago. The kicker is that I informed my supervisor of my move and even provided my address and nothing was said until I moved. ...

Moving On After SoftScript
Feb 07, 2013

I, too, was one of the "account specific victims" at SoftScript.  I was fired for a QA score of 90%.  This score was from 100% account specific errors (same error over and over in four different reports).  Rather than counting one formatting or specific error, they dinged me over and over, making my QA score 90.4%.   My question is, when applying for future jobs, if they call SS for a reference, will they tell them that my QA score was that low?  I have never in my 20 y ...

Moving On To A Non-MT Job Opportunity
Apr 30, 2015

I am pleased to say I have found an open door to a job opportunity that is outside of MT work.  It is a job that will utilize my experience in healthcare and my medical terminology.  A very nice pay increase, regular holidays off with pay, and vacation and sick time. No weekend work. Most importantly, a new skill set that makes my more marketable opening up more future opportunities as well. I hope this encourages some of you to see what is out there.  Submitting a resume or filli ...

Moving Cursor In EXtext

Hello,  I work for a local cardiology group and we use Nuance with Dragon (EXtext). My Employer Is Moving From Trans To MQ's VR Platform

My employer use MedQuist’s DocQScribe software and is moving us all onto its VR.  So far, what we’re seeing from the VR is almost completely garbage, but MedQuist claims that our corrections will “teach” the VR to recognize our dictators’ speech patterns.  Of course, our wages are being renegotiated, as well.  We have about three dozen MTs and I think a few hundred dictators.  So far, it takes me about 25% longer to correct this VR trash than it ...

Thanks, Nuance For Moving Me To Disastrous Account
Nov 12, 2013

Thanks, Nuance, for moving me and several other MTs to what looks and sounds like a disastrous account just before the holidays. Yeah, the cents per line is a little bit higher than what I was making on my previous account, but when you factor in the slow going it will be because of the 73 PAGES OF ACCOUNT SPECS that we have to learn, the hundreds (maybe thousands??
