Hi,

I was wondering if their is anyone that has graduated from At-home-professions?

And did you find a job right away, what was your thoughts on the school?

Because I keep seeing all these posts and I am getting woried since I am in the school right now.

Thanks!

Jess, I just sent in my final exam and waiting for the final course results. As a retired teacher, I found the course to be thourogh and well organized. I have not yet as the school for job leads, which they won't do until all course requirements are met. The most discouraging thing that to me is the number of what appears to be unhappy MTs, the condition and termoil of the field and that no place will give you a chance to get your feet in the door without experience. This coupled with what appears to be a great number of people looking for work is dishearening. How far are you from completing the course?

I graduated from At-Home Professions about 7 years ago. I got a job almost immediately transcribing for a podiatrist. I sent out several resumes with a cover letter to the doctors in the area that I lived in at that time. The office manager interviewed several applicants, some of which had worked in the field for many years, and I got the job. I worked at home on a part-time basis. To be honestly truthful, it was quite a challenge at first, but it all worked out quite well. I have now moved to another state and guess what I'm going---transcription for a pediatric therapy group. They are also paying for me to take a billing and coding course through the local community college so that they can bring their billing in-house. So I guess everybody has a different story to tell, but my experience with At-Home Professions turned out quite well.

I took the At-Home Professions course and graduated in Dec. 2009....cannot find a job. Everyone wants experience. When I signed up for the program, I was lead to believe the school would help with job placement....all they offered was some internet addresses...Good Luck

You need to go to a school that will give you a more comprehensive education that will make you competitive. Don't even consider any school that does not use the SUM program. You might want to look at Andrews and M-TEC. Good luck to you!

I graduated from At-Home Professions in Aug. 09 have been trying almost on a daily basis to find a job, but have had zero luck. Everyone wants experience or for you to be able to work onsite. The seminar I attended for At-Home Professions made it sound so easy to find an at home job fresh out of school. In my opinion it was very misleading and a waste of my time and money. In looking back I should have tried a medical billing/coding school since I have several years of work experience in that field. Good luck.

The seminar you attended was a crock. You should report these folks to the BBB. If you like MT, go to a decent school--Andrews, M-Tec, etc. Sorry you had this experience but AHP is known as a less than desirable school. Good luck.

I agree about the seminar being a crock. - deb

The decent schools don't have to travel around holding seminars to sign up students. I bet they pressured you the night of the seminar to sign up, right? Before you were able to check around and find out that AHP is a crappy course that doesn't teach you enough of what you need to know (and the people who do the hiring KNOW that). Sure some people who took that course have found work. Even a blind squirrel stumbles across a nut once in a while. But the competition is getting tougher all the time, people with years of experience are losing their jobs to overseas or voice recognition, and they will definitely be hired over most newbies, especially those with inferior educations.

I know it's probably not likely that any of you can afford ANOTHER MT school right now. Keep on testing anywhere they will let you, and good luck.

I also just graduated from At-Home Professions and totally agree that it was a sales job, I wish I would have taken the medical coding course. Seems there is much more of a need.

Forget about job leads. When I asked after I graduated, they said they couldn't help.

I already owned a small 'secretarial' service and had an ad in the yellow pages. Only through that ad did I pick up a podiatrist (before I graduated) and still with him.

I did find their transcription tapes to be 'real'. I had a mix of all ESL accents and for that, I was grateful.

School did nothing for me except give me experience with ESLs. I did get a job at a local hospital after a year of trying everywhere and found out later that they wanted 'typists' who knew 'a little jargon', but that gave me the experience I needed to make the lousy wages of today, WHEN I have work.

I'm an AHP graduate, and found that the course and the graduate counselors were helpful. Like other people have said, it takes work to get a job. I followed the counselors advice to find an MT job, and I am happy I chose AHP. The MT course is definitely not a rip off, and the school is accredited through the DETC. The course follows AHDI guidelines. Be happy you chose AHP! I am!

I am very happy with the training I received through AHP. The economy is no help, though, I must add. I'm still looking for work after much mailing, door-to-door and phone calls. AHP actually called me out of the blue a couple weeks ago with a lead. I'm still waiting to hear after I tested with a company. If I don't get it , I'll chalk it up as experience taking the test. Don't give up. Some days I feel like throwing in the towel on searching, but then I get motivated and keep looking. Sounds like its not unusual for it to take awhile. I put too much money into starting my IC business to give up now! Good luck to all of you!

New Graduate Seeking Advice
Oct 24, 2009

I graduated from Career Step’s program in early September. I am becoming very frustrated in my job search, and I thought I would come on here for some motivation. I have been working as a supervisor at a commercial cleaning company since graduating high school in 2002. This job requires attention to detail, time-management abilities, and computer skills. All three of these carry over into the transcription field. Attention to detail is required for checking my crew’s work. Dur ...

Our Profession
Jun 12, 2010

When I look at our profession now -- what it has devolved into -- and compare its present condition with how it was just 20 years ago, the contrast is STAGGERING. With enhanced technology, medical transcription -- and, by extension, patient care -- should have improved by leaps and bounds, both in terms of TAT and QUALITY.  Only half of that has been met: the decreased TAT.  QUALITY has been compromised to such a degree that it is SHAMEFUL.  My current employer has ...

I'm Out Of This Profession!
May 29, 2014

I start a new non-transcription job next week.  Today is my last day at this lousy company and I am finally doing what I've dreamt about doing for a long time - I'm typing everything EXACTLY as the doctor is dictating it.  They want verbatim, they are getting verbatim.  I'm not fixing a single thing and I just don't care at all. It's wonderful! Let the doctors see how idiotic they sound sometimes.  And don't anyone bother to admonish me about how ...

Need Advice: Considering The Profession
Jan 28, 2010

Hello, I sure would appreciate your guidance!  I am trying to change careers and am in the process of deciding what to go to school for.  I thought MT would be a great idea and suited my lifestyle, but a lot of what I read here tells me the profession is shrinking, and newbies out of school struggle to find work.  (I am in FL, with huge medical demands, btw.) What I had planned, was to complete my course (local community college online) and find entry level work, if possible.&nbs ...

We Need To Demand More Pay As A Profession
Aug 06, 2010

Just need to vent. I have been a medical transcriptionist since the late 1980s and I have seen the trend to cut our pay consistently over the years. It look over 20 years for me to gain the experience I have, in most specialities I might add.  It is very disconcerting to have a company offer 7 to 8 cpl with my experience.   Now, with voice recognition (which it seems most of the larger companies out there have), our pays are cut even more so.  I might add, at least for me, ...

Is This Profession Even Worth It?
Nov 19, 2010

I have to say this is my first time to this website and I am deeply discouraged by the forums I have read because it sounds like this line of work is basically dying a slow death. I am currently enrolled in a community college and am about to finish getting my certificate ( I am in my last class which is practice/internship) to become a Medical Transcriptionist but I'm beginning to wonder if it was worth it? I already had fears because of accounts going offshore and EMRs but reading some of ...

This Profession Is Pathetic
Jun 23, 2013

Cannot believe it, I am 60 years old, been doing this almost 40 years and I sat down last night and really checked things over and now with NJA all the time, my monthly bills are not covered by my 2 pay checks a month.  I do not have a high mortgage ($240 a month, can't rent a room for that), I have basic cable that is bundled with the internet (which we all need to do this job), the very minimum of phone bill ($40), and have to pay for my own health insurance (as my company  ...

The MT Profession Has Really Gone Down The Tubes
Oct 30, 2013

The MT profession has really gone down the tubes.  I have no desire to do this anymore and that's why I've been training for other things.  These Quality Control people have nit picked to the point I just cannot stand it anymore (forgetting "the" or taking out "the") and the other extremely petty crap that they ding for (and it has no bearing on patient care whatsoever).  Who wants to work like this anymore (and for the rotten pay on top of that to boot)?  It never used to be like ...

Medical Transcription - Done With This Profession
Jun 08, 2010

My name is Carol  and I am a medical transcriptionist from Maryland.  I am very upset as I am typing this.  I am done with this profession.  I suspect that is what they want.  I have a family to feed.  No more playing games with stupid VR and accounts that sneakily send the work overseas due to corporate greed.  No person who does that could ever call themselves patriotic or American, but I bet they do.  I have been doing this and doing it well for over 20 years.  In no other vocation ...
