New Everett Cc Graduate - sefrost53

Posted: Nov 11, 2013

I graduated from Everett CC's MT program in August and took their test prep class to extend my access to Career Step and learn as much as possible before I hit the bricks. My instructor suggested I apply to Nuance, as they hire new grads and have a training period to break them in to their company. Any thoughts?

Go back to school and learn a different trade. Transcription is a dying field. Don't waste any more time on it.

No Future for MTs - sefrost53

Cheez, the replies to my post make me sick, so profound is their cynicism. I started doing MT a few years ago w/o formal instruction and made some serious duckets doing that. I understand MT is dying, but I also think there are a few good years left. I love doing MT, so I will go where my heart leads and let the chips fall where they may. Next year by this time I'll be halfway thru a Coding program. I am a 60-year-old white female and stopped going to job interviews despite my slam-bang resume, due to being repeatedly turned down for the 1st time in my life; I believe it's cuz of my age. So it's either MT, coding, or writing the Great American Novel.

Wasting money on an MT program was a mistake - but it is never too late SM

to go back to school, even at your age. I finished registering today and it sure the H isn't for a career that's dead (I made sure to do my research fully). MT is covered by a sheet, waiting to be taken downstairs to the morgue. The experienced people who've been doing this for years see it clearly. The smart ones are out, or on their way out fairly soon.

Sadly, I think you'll find coding starting to circle the drain soon if it's not doing so already.

I'm going for something I can use the rest of my life to actually make money; small business management degree and then elective courses further related to my business.

no future as MT - believe me

I'm sorry that you were sucked in to believing that you could make a living as an MT. Shame on Everett for taking your money and giving you hope that there's a future in the MT industry. Think of it like this: You learned something new. You can use your medical terminology in other ways. Maybe you can become a nurse or x-ray technician. But I wouldn't get my hopes up about becoming an MT. Yes, Nuance hires newbies, but you still won't make any money.

She's 60 years old, for heaven's sake - Out of here

You act as if you think people are planning to work for the rest of their lives. I'm 59 and work in transcription QA. When it ends, probably in a year or two, I don't plan on doing anything else, I certainly won't go back to school to train for a new career and expect to get hired. I don't know if you realize it, but rad tech jobs are scarce because the market is over saturated, besides the fact that being on one's feet all day and lifting patients is something that most 60+ year olds don't want to be doing. Nursing is also a physically demanding job unless a person can get into case management or clinical documentation improvement. I'm a trained coder and actually had the same experience on interviews as the OP; they don't want to train someone only to have them retire in a year or two. I also love MT and had actually planned to try and find a part-time editing gig or QA job to do in retirement. I have my 401K and can start drawing SS at 62. As a person ages, their income expectations change, I know mine have. I am going to learn to live on less and not work myself into an early grave. For the OP, maybe an MT or coding job is what is going to work for her at this stage of her life. Everett CC is an excellent school, by the way. They don't "take people's money," it is all done voluntarily.

I agree - If she is 60, I would think she has at least - 5 more years of MT work

ahead of her whether it's editing or QA. It would be different if she were 25 and trying to make a life-long career out of it.

Nuance does not break you in... - it just breaks you...nm

Hi sefrost53. - sm

I am happy at Nuance. My advice would be to take notes as you go along while you view the training modules. Also, keep all of your supporting documentation in a folder on your desktop so you can refer to it easily, especially when you get started on your account. You'll also have a live session with a trainer - come prepared with questions. Welcome!

Thank you for saying something positive. I usually try to avoid this site because of all the negativity. My thinking, if you don't like MT, go do something else. Maybe there will be enough work for those of us who do enjoy doing it. Have a Great Day!

I am happy here too. I say, go for it. Nuance isn't perfect but then again life isn't either. When I started 15 years ago I heard this field was dying out. We are all dying out, no one lives forever and no job is forever. I love working here, wish I got more PTO but at least I am home with my babies!

I graduated, but not with honors or high honors, Within one month, I got a wonderful job right out of the  ...

All three of these carry over into the transcription field. Attention to detail is required for checking my crew’s work. Dur ...
