New Graduate, need work how? - wjero

Posted: Jan 25, 2010

I am a recent graduate of At-Home Professions.  I have posted my resume at several companies but have either not gotten any response or the few that have responded state they are looking for experience.  How can I get hired as a new graduate.  Any help would be appreciated.

I am sorry to hear about your plight. My friend wanted to go into this field and I advised her not to because of VR and my having done this for 20 plus years losing my accounts and jobs to this. I told her not to waste her money on this and she didn't really believe me. I told her I would also need to go back to school soon for something else. Don't think its just you. I have applied to many companies in the past 6 months and have gotten no replies at all. This field is over saturated with transcriptionists and between VR and India we are all lucky to still have jobs the ones that do. I would advise you to look for something else maybe in the medical field or continue school for something else. That's just my opinion, but after reading other's complaints and I too have never had as much trouble paying my bills as I have this past year. Good luck.

Unfortunately, it's really tough out there. Companies used to consider MT school as experience, but they no longer do. Everywhere I go, I hear graduates saying they sent out a lot of resumes but get no response. I've sent out a little over 100 resumes; however, I have only gotten 13 responses. That includes places which had online testing that I completed.

The best bet seems to be to just keep trying. I've started re-contacting places that didn't reply to me the first time. Also, keep reading all the MT forums you can find. Sometimes someone will mention a company is hiring newbies, you can get inside information that way.

Good luck!

I am a recent graduate of an AHDI-approved training school. I have applied to over 50 schools so far and if they bother to reply, the only reply I received is they do not want newbies! I am interviewing tomorrow at a local hospital for a menial job that requires medical terminology. At least I learned that in the course. This last year of studying has been a colossal waste of time, not to mention, money. I would never recommend this course to anyone, no matter who the school is. Too many transcriptionists, no jobs for newbies, and no one willing to take a chance on us. What a shame!

And yet people not only keep signing up with MT schools, - deb

they sign up with the cheapest and least expensive schools (i.e. crappy education that doesn't teach you enough to actually do the work and they cannot help with job placement because all the companies KNOW that the course is crap). Even if 500 people say they took such & such a course and could not find a job afterwards, if even ONE person says they DID find a job, people just jump on that and sign right up. Then they come back here & whine because nobody will give them a chance. (I'm not talking about the OP, who said she signed up with an AHDI-approved course, although in my own personal opinion AHDI approval means absolutely nothing).

I believe that one of the most valuable standards people can use when selecting a school is to ask whether they use the SUM program. The SUM program is essential. Other schools (i.e., "the matchbooks") are worse than nothing because they separate people from their money and give nothing in return. And quite often, these are the very people who can least afford to lose the money. Folks just need to remember: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. To say you got your diploma/education from a matchbook school is no better than saying you got it out of a CrackerJack box.

New Graduate Seeking Advice

I graduated from Career Step’s program in early September. I am becoming very frustrated in my job search, and I thought I would come on here for some motivation. All three of these carry over into the transcription field. Attention to detail is required for checking my crew’s work. Dur ...
