New graduate seeking advice - NewCSGraduate

Posted: Oct 24, 2009

I graduated from Career Step’s program in early September. I am becoming very frustrated in my job search, and I thought I would come on here for some motivation.

I have been working as a supervisor at a commercial cleaning company since graduating high school in 2002. This job requires attention to detail, time-management abilities, and computer skills. All three of these carry over into the transcription field.

Attention to detail is required for checking my crew’s work. During the cleaning process and after my crew has finished, I inspect our work area to ensure proper vacuuming, mopping, and dusting. I am required to ensure my crewmembers are consistently working and not taking breaks every few minutes. I am also responsible for ensuring my crew has the proper equipment to do their jobs, and this needs to be checked nightly.

Time management is also very important in my job. We normally have 5 offices to clean and only 8 hours to do so. The offices are not close to one another, and they are quite large. I am required to keep track of time to ensure we arrive at the offices and have them cleaned before the office employees start arriving for work.

I use the computer for multiple tasks everyday. I schedule work shifts, plan crew meetings, and order supplies using my computer. I also print out scheduled tasks for individual crewmembers to ensure they know their assigned duties for that night.

I have sent out approximately 50 resumes, and I have tested with several companies as well. Most of these companies tell me I did well on the test but that they are not currently seeking entry-level employees.

Anyway, that is my story. I just wanted to vent a little, and I hope someone can offer me some helpful advice.

Thanks everyone.

The company is laying off most of us and is only keeping 2 crews. I will be out of a job in about 3 weeks.

Some helpful advice for you... - kiki

I've been an MT for 10 years. It seems like yesterday that I was a newbie looking for my first job. It seemed like a catch-22 situation, needed experience to get the job yet needed a job to get experience.

There are some companies that do hire newbies, you have to look pretty hard, but they ARE there. Are you offering to work any shift/any days to start? That's how I got my foot in the door; I worked graveyard shift AND weekends.

Are you trying in-house jobs as well as nationals? I know it's frustrating to get that first job after you graduate. We've all been there. I would say just keep testing, following up, studying more, and be willing to start with an undesirable schedule if you can.

If you truly are doing excellent on the tests, you will find something eventually.

Good luck to you! :)

First I would like to compliment you on your articulate post. I particularly noticed your proper use of "ensure" rather than the common mistake made in this context "insure", as well as the proper use of "advice" rather than the common mistake "advise." If I had an MT business I would invite you to take a transcription test and if you did well, you would be on my payroll pronto.

My best advice would be to forget sending out resumes. I know that Career Step says they have affiliates who hire their grads. Get on the phone with them and ask them to help you. I would also get out the phone and a list of MTSOs and call them rather than sending resumes. After they confirm they will consider you as a newbie provided you do well on the test then take it from there.

Good luck to you!
