medical transcription - done with this profession - smoochthis

Posted: Jun 08, 2010

My name is Carol  and I am a medical transcriptionist from Maryland.  I am very upset as I am typing this.  I am done with this profession.  I suspect that is what they want.  I have a family to feed.  No more playing games with stupid VR and accounts that sneakily send the work overseas due to corporate greed.  No person who does that could ever call themselves patriotic or American, but I bet they do.  I have been doing this and doing it well for over 20 years.  In no other vocation have I observed the absolute hatred and disgust the employer seems to have towards the employee, it is something akin to the slave trade.  If I had the time or money I would picket my local hospitals for us, I would go to the justice department and the employer/employee watchdogs and tell them about the schemes that pass for MT jobs.  How schools are taking hopeful MTs money and promising bountiful, great-earning jobs whch do not exist.  I am done with this profession.  I think it is personally the most stressful, dead-end worse job there is.  Time to get a normal job where people smile at you, pat you on the back, give you a steady paycheck and don't plot and scheme on how to take it from you.  There are only about 3 good companies out there.  No MT company is better for you than if you approach the docs, clinics and hospitals YOURSELVES for work!  Good Bless all of YOU.  I feel sorry for anyone who is an MT, especially at home.

Well put, Carol - anythingbutMT

I think you've hit the nail on the head. We have to be ready to provide an on-time, quality, client-ready product and go to the doctors ourselves, perhaps on a contractual basis - a good price for a well-done product produced by a professional. After all, that is what we are - professionals. I don't think all is lost for the field of medical transcription (perhaps especially for the young ones just learning the craft) and I don't think we should pay much heed to the ones who say we are going to have to learn to do things this way or we should be doing things that way. Personally, I still think the docs and the facilities just want their notes transcribed in a timely manner for a reasonable rate, and I still believe that even in the changing world, they'd rather have a person managing their notes than a machine. In my many hours spent searching the internet for what is out there for transcription jobs, I saw a hospital in Tennessee who is directly hiring transcriptionists from all over the country without the middle man... and guess where I found their ad - on a website for retired people!! Thanks.

I am sorry - LK

I can feel your frustration and anger literally bursting out of your post, and I don't blame you, it sounds like you have gotten shafted. Maybe it's time for you to be done with MT, and I don't for a minute think MT is a great field to go into right now. But with the right company, it can still be a good thing. I'm doing fine at my company and enjoy working there, but I decided some time ago I wouldn't do VR and wouldn't work for a company that offshores. I honestly think there are more than 3 good companies out there, I know I was able to find one.

The question is, how long will that "good company" still be - there, and still be "good", until the - sm

likes of Medquist, or one of the other thoroughly EVIL MTSOs out there, comes along and grabs your company, consumes its account, and then spits out your company's MTs? It can happen to anyBODY, any TIME. Once the Evil Ones have 100% control of all MT, it will ALL go offshore. I hope all the spoiled, rich suits go to India right along with them, and GET THE H3LL OUT OF THE U.S.A.

THEY ARE NO LONGER WELCOME HERE.

The world is certainly changing, isn't it? - What jobs? What Careers? They are gone

Jobs everywhere are just disappearing. It's sad, because people have to work.

Unfortunately we probably all agree MT is not the easiest job to have in this day and age, but if you are limiting yourself to not editing VR and not working from home, the work is just not going to be there. Times have definitely changed (not for the best either) from when we started 20+ years ago, and that MT is being shafted by new greedy MTSOs. There are still a few good companies to work for, but they still don't pay what we deserve, but then again they get what they pay for and technology still needs us...Chin up friend.. The few, the proud, the Medical Transcriptionist!! LOL

Well said! - nm

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

U.S. Transcription Non Medical
Sep 01, 2011

I answered an ad for U.S. Transcription posted on MT Jobs, was asked to test, and within an hour of submitting my test I was offered a job.  After my heart came down from a happy dance at an actual job offer, I found I really have some things to think about before I say yes. This would be for 2nd shift, non-medical transcription at 0.06/cpl for straight transcription, 0.03/cpl if a company provided template is used.  I suppose I need to ask what my expected production would be before ...

I'm fairly new to medical transcription. I received my certification in 2010 and was a little discouraged when applying for jobs and they were all looking for experienced agents to work from home. Anyone ever do non-medical transcription? I'm interested to know if you liked it. I tried it for a few days and just decided it wasn't for me. Non-medical Transcription?
Dec 08, 2012

I'm a 2011 MT grad who posted not long ago looking for advice.  While googling MT companies to apply to, I found some non-medical transcription services, namely one that transcribes dialogue from a video for production/entertainment companies.  This site had instructions and a download to take the test.  What the heck, I'm going to take it and see what happens.  Since MT is practically a dead-end career, I've been trying to come up with ther ways to utilize my ...

Thank You Medical Transcription
Aug 23, 2013

I quit a job a dozen years ago to jump into the "Work At Home" dream.  I had little money, was quite naive, worked from dark to dark with absolutely no help from the small MTSO, who later ripped me off $5,000.  BUT, I learned. After my first experience with "running out of work", I just found more work.  I got unusually lucky and found a job and was MTing again in a few days. That gig gave me nearly 10 years of working for another small MTSO.  I got busy and made tons of mon ...

If I Was Let Go Of A Home Medical Transcription Job...?

In previous posts I mentioned that I was let go of a home medical transcription job because I didn't produce the "perfect" amount of work that was needed right away...
