Hello. I was wondering if there any AHP students locally in the Cleveland Ohio area. I am in course book four quiz 25. I am looking for Email correspondence or getting. together and study. I have been doing this course alone part time for over two years now and it would be nice to meet other students.

Are you Expecting to get a job - Going to that school?

Hmmm, just wondering. Good luck. Your director of the school (if there is one there) should help you network with other students and should also help you know of job openings at which MTSOs.

I think that would be a good start to your question. If you don't have a director that is available to contact, then you have an answer that you actually didn't ask a question to.

You people are very positive

no, just realistic - MTMT

Unfortunately, the school you've chosen isn't very good. Many years ago I took the coding & billing course from that school. After I finished I decided that wasn't what I wanted to do, and ended up taking the MT course from M-TEC, one of the top schools for medical transcription. I learned more in the first two lessons than the entire AHP course. When I interviewed and tested for my first MT job, the supervisor said she wouldn't hire a "newbie" unless they had gone to M-TEC (and by the way, I did get the job).

But sadly, this is a dying field, and even M-TEC has stopped offering the MT course. Your only option is Andrews. It's much more expensive than AHP. But (as I learned myself) you get what you pay for.

It's a shame that you've already spent 2 years studying for MT because if and when you do finish, you will have a very difficult time finding a job. Many of the posters on this board have decades of experience and are unable to find work, or are working for very low pay.

Perhaps you'll be able to find a receptionist job in a doctor's office, but it's not likely that you'll get an MT job with a certificate from AHP.

I would suggest you start over and research another career, but do not spend any more money taking any course offered by AHP.

Good luck in your future endeavors.

I'm the one who asked if you expected to get a job after graduating from that school. I was being sarcastic, but trying to be nice about it.

Gosh, I've been doing acute care MT for about 15 years, so I know what I'm talking about. I went to Andrews many moons ago and even then, it was tough at first. But I had 3 job offers straight out of school, because companies know who has a good teaching program and who doesn't. You may get someone who will allow you to test with them, but you'll have to sell yourself.

I'm thinking you didn't explore schools or the MT job outlook very well. It's a horrible, horrible mess. I wish you would have come on here and asked first. We're brutally honest.

You betcha we're positive--positive you will not get a job with those credentials.

At Home Professions is not a good school and medical - me

transcription is a dying field. My local community college has discontinued their program because graduates cannot get jobs, and they can't find local companies to offer internships.

I think AHP is a good school. I did ask about the Transcription field and I learned that Transcription is changing not necessarily dying out. There are still jobs for Medical Transcriptionists but in many cases they do other tasks besides just medical transcription, like billing and coding.

I went to this school, but did not graduate. sm - Laurie G.

I was actually hired by a small MTSO when I was only halfway through the course. I never finished the course and did not receive a certificate of completion. However, it only took me a little while to wish I'd had better training. If I'd known then what I know now, I more than likely would have chosen training from M-Tec or Andrews. I did supplement my course with the SUM tapes and I had a mentor who taught me a great deal while working for a teaching hospital. I did transcription for 10 years and "retired" from it over 4 years ago, and I now advise students who are interested in it to look elsewhere. There are probably a few good positions out there, but they are very few and far between. Best wishes to you, in any event.

You were fortunate - To have had a mentor

I got out of the MT biz completely after 15 years. Awful.

We are trying to spare this person disappointment and shock when she finds out the hard way that she chose the wrong school. You were extremely fortunate to have someone by your side mentoring you. That's not usually the case.

To the OP: I hope you are reading these latest posts. We're not trying to be "downers" we're trying to open up your eyes so that you aren't shocked. I know you've invested time and money and don't want to give up the hope, but maybe start some sort of plan as a back-up.

As this person's original post - was not asking for

[ In Reply To ..]
anyone's opinion on the sad state of MT of the merits of a chosen study course, I just gotta say *wow*. Since no one has any idea of this person's situation, why chime in with all the unsolicited negativity and general nastiness? Oh, that's right, we're the MT Stars and we now have the most miserable job on the planet and a sworn duty to warn anyone even remotely interested to stay away from the MT job or any school other than Andrews. I forgot, my bad.

I feel I have a duty - To warn

Okay, so this person didn't ask if she chose a good school or what the field was like. But she did want to network with others from the school. My point was that if the school was worth its salt, it would already have a networking forum or something in place for students and instructors to bounce things around, and she wouldn't have to ask us.

I personally just like to spare people the shock of it all. She has been in the course for 2 years, and since things have been sour for way more years than that, my notes are kind of cautionary notes for other people thinking about which school to choose, or if they should even go into this business to begin with.

People have a right to know. A good deal of my notes about this, that and the other thing are for all, not just the poster.

Our Profession
Jun 12, 2010

When I look at our profession now -- what it has devolved into -- and compare its present condition with how it was just 20 years ago, the contrast is STAGGERING. With enhanced technology, medical transcription -- and, by extension, patient care -- should have improved by leaps and bounds, both in terms of TAT and QUALITY.  Only half of that has been met: the decreased TAT.  QUALITY has been compromised to such a degree that it is SHAMEFUL.  My current employer has ...

I'm Out Of This Profession!
May 29, 2014

I start a new non-transcription job next week.  Today is my last day at this lousy company and I am finally doing what I've dreamt about doing for a long time - I'm typing everything EXACTLY as the doctor is dictating it.  They want verbatim, they are getting verbatim.  I'm not fixing a single thing and I just don't care at all. It's wonderful! Let the doctors see how idiotic they sound sometimes.  And don't anyone bother to admonish me about how ...

Need Advice: Considering The Profession
Jan 28, 2010

Hello, I sure would appreciate your guidance!  I am trying to change careers and am in the process of deciding what to go to school for.  I thought MT would be a great idea and suited my lifestyle, but a lot of what I read here tells me the profession is shrinking, and newbies out of school struggle to find work.  (I am in FL, with huge medical demands, btw.) What I had planned, was to complete my course (local community college online) and find entry level work, if possible.&nbs ...

We Need To Demand More Pay As A Profession
Aug 06, 2010

Just need to vent. I have been a medical transcriptionist since the late 1980s and I have seen the trend to cut our pay consistently over the years. It look over 20 years for me to gain the experience I have, in most specialities I might add.  It is very disconcerting to have a company offer 7 to 8 cpl with my experience.   Now, with voice recognition (which it seems most of the larger companies out there have), our pays are cut even more so.  I might add, at least for me, ...

Is This Profession Even Worth It?
Nov 19, 2010

I have to say this is my first time to this website and I am deeply discouraged by the forums I have read because it sounds like this line of work is basically dying a slow death. I am currently enrolled in a community college and am about to finish getting my certificate ( I am in my last class which is practice/internship) to become a Medical Transcriptionist but I'm beginning to wonder if it was worth it? I already had fears because of accounts going offshore and EMRs but reading some of ...

Cannot believe it, I am 60 years old, been doing this almost 40 years and I sat down last night and really checked things over and now with NJA all the time, my monthly bills are not covered by my 2 pay checks a month.  I do not have a high mortgage ($240 a month, can't rent a room for that), I have basic cable that is bundled with the internet (which we all need to do this job), the very minimum of phone bill ($40), and have to pay for my own health insurance (as my company  ...

The MT Profession Has Really Gone Down The Tubes
Oct 30, 2013

The MT profession has really gone down the tubes.  I have no desire to do this anymore and that's why I've been training for other things.  These Quality Control people have nit picked to the point I just cannot stand it anymore (forgetting "the" or taking out "the") and the other extremely petty crap that they ding for (and it has no bearing on patient care whatsoever).  Who wants to work like this anymore (and for the rotten pay on top of that to boot)?  It never used to be like ...

Medical Transcription - Done With This Profession

I'm feeling stuck and I just need to vent a little bit.  I have been a transcriptionist for 12 years and loved every minute of it until just the last couple of months.  I trained with the Q and really enjoyed that job.  Had a great supervisor and all was good.  I was offered an IC position with our local hospital making 0.16/line, 50 cpl with spaces.  Of course I grabbed that up.  This was 5 years ago.  2 years ago we got a new supervisor who made us all s ...

Hang MT As A Dying Profession. I'm Going To Be MA.

At least MA skills can be used for other things and can be a stepping stone to other careers, and you can get a da** job almost anywhere. Repeat To: MT Profession Vs. Cleaning Toilets.

See, this is a perfect example. Great!! - So we have people willing to make the same amount doing medical transcription as cleaning toilets. That makes me feel better after 15 years of experience. Lets Review For Fun The Denegration Of This Profession

This So-called "profession"
