low work due to spring break??? - Kitty Lady

Posted: Mar 20, 2013

Now low work this morning is due to spring break.  Next week it will be Easter.  What then??  To my knowledge hospitals are open 27/7 and still take patients.  Wonder what the next excuse will be--why don't they just tell the truth.

Do the doctors - All go to Cancun??

Gosh darn, they've been using spring break like forever.

My docs have been on spring break since November! - love the excuses though

Its fun trying to come up with what the next excuse will be.

Always Cracks me up - see msg

I never, ever understood what spring break has to do with anything. Maybe my definition is different from their's, but spring break to me is when the college kids are on break from school and then go travel somewhere.

Maybe spring break now just means Easter week and all the docs and their families go to Disney World or something. Like, all at once in every hospital in the country.

Spring break is not just for college kids - anon

Where I am from, everyone takes a vacation when the kids are out of school, usually to Disneyland. I've worked the same hospital account for many years and it always slows down around spring break time. My college kids were out last week, middle school is next week. It is spring break for someone every week for 3 or 4 weeks around here (Utah). We went to Disneyland last year for spring break and the place was packed with people on spring break from everywhere.

Must be spring break since last July. I have not had a 40 hour week since last July.
I have not missed 40 hours since Christmas - anon-op

The only time I had to use PTO for NJA was during Christmas. The work has definitely not been as plentiful, but I am still able to get my 40 hours in. The work has gone up and down with the holidays/spring breaks etc, just as always, but at a constant lower volume than usual. I feel lucky that my accounts at least are still at least flowing with some work.
Hey Kittie Lady! I am serious when I say... - none

I am so sorry for you. I don't know how you are making it. I would like to ask you, why are you still here if you have had so little hours for so long? I am just curious. No ugliness intended..Thanks and take care.

Jobs are hard to come by. I put in what I can and try to make up the rest with a part time job that I have been doing for 5 years. Only need to hold on until July and then semi retiring. No jobs available for the over 60 set where I live. I have been doing this for 15 years and not had a problem since last July when the account I was working on went overseas. Was told when I moved to fluency platform that I would not run out of work as the hospitals had lots of work. Since last july I have not put in 40 hours. Try to make up time when I don't have to go to my second job on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday--20 hours.
Spring break versus school vacation...SM - Old Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
Where I live, spring break definitely refers to college level where they get a mid-term break and then a spring break. The other breaks (elementary and high school), we refer to as school vactions, such as Christmas vacation, February vacation and spring vacation, and of the course the best one of all (if you're a kid) is summer vacation.
Thank you! - It must be a regional thing.
[ In Reply To ..]
..but it still doesn't explain the lack of work.

Spring vacation: Okay, every doctor in every hospital in our particular region goes away and leaves the hospitals void of doctors.

The general population of people who don't go on vacation never get sick. Or maybe they do, but there are no doctors to dictate their reports.

I get it now. How stupid of me.
it's spring break for everyone here - anon

Grade school, middle school, high school, and college. And the spring breaks for all levels are at the same time. That way if you have a kid in college but also in grade, middle, or high school, they are on spring break at the same time so the family is able to go somewhere. Obviously if your college student goes to another state/area,they might have a different spring break than you K-12 kids. It is NOT just for college kids. Where I live, more people do take family vacations than don't for spring break.

Yes, they do take off spring break - Anon

I have been a transcriptionist for over 30 years. I worked in a teaching hospital for many years. I've had my own hospital and surgery center accounts. And my kids also went to school full of doctors' kids. Yes, doctors take off for spring break and go on trips with their kids. I have hospital and surgery center accounts. Both are slow right now because it is spring break.

On one surgery center account there are usually 30 surgeries a day. Today I have four dictations for that one. On the other one, usually there are 20 to 25 surgeries a day. Today I had 11 dictations, but not one on Monday or Tuesday this week.

There is no work on the clinic accounts; most of the doctors are gone.

Yes, people still get sick and still go in the hospital, and of course some doctors still have to be there, but a lot aren't. So to answer your question - yes, it really does slow down spring break. It's not a lie made up by your MTSO.

What you have to understand and accept - old and burned out

is that this company doesn't care whether you have work or not. All they are about is their turnaround time. If you don't have work during the day, they figure you will stay up all night because you need the money. They will keep hiring until they get people who are willing to do this and will let those who are not willing quit or be terminated. This is never going to change.

what you - Kitty Lady

I know. That is why in July I am taking a cut in social security and semi retiring. I have a second part time job in a grocery store, so I am going to work there part time. I make more money there but hours are not regular and based on seasonal customers. I live in the boonies and work in a grocery store in an upscale community by a ski area that is mainly seasonally based. Sometimes 10 hours, sometimes 40 hours, can't rely on it for bills.

The excuses are endless. I am Jewish, but I do not expect hospitals to be closed for Passover!

Spring At TransTech

Reading in between the lines, here's my interpretation of an email I might get from TransTech if I were to ask what's going on: Dearest Darlings, Spring has sprung here at TransTech!  Unfortunately, there's no work since apparently all the dictators and patients decided not to go to the hospital.  Actually, we probably just overhired (shhh, don't tell anyone, it might make us look bad).  In the meantime, get up early in the morning like you normally do, stare ...

USING THE BREAK FUNCTION
Nov 10, 2009

Have you ever used the break function simply because you had a dictator that was so horrible that you got frustrated and sent it back?  I know that we are not supposed to do this and that MQ supposedly keeps track of how many breaks we use but I have to admit I have done this no occasion.  I had a report so bad a couple of weeks ago which was over 1000 seconds long and an ESL doctor, not to mention scratchy sound, etc.  About halfway through this thing I had already spent nearly 2 ...

Are We No Longer Getting Break Pay?
Aug 17, 2012

Unpaid 30 Minute Break And...
Jul 22, 2013

I don't mind having an unpaid 30-minute break, but the thing that bothers me about some of these companies is the fact that it is tiring sitting at a computer for 8 hours and getting only a 30 minute break.  If I want two more 15 minute breaks those can be worked in, but then I have to add back 30 more minutes to my time! I like to at least stretch ever hour or so.  :/  ...
