summer break - Kelli

Posted: May 28, 2010

How do other mothers deal with summer break when their kids are out of school as far as working for a company?  Do some companies let you have summers off and then return in the fall?  Do some MTs change their schedules around possibly doing work at night, etc?  Any companies better about this than others?

mine are goinig to day camp - seriously

through the Y. Can you imagine asking the doctors to stop dictating while your children are out of school? Life goes on whether or not school is in session. I work a full time and a part time job (MTSO and for a private physician). If I were to tell either one that I couldn't work for the summer, they would tell me goodbye.

unless you are an IC - you likely will not

find an employer who is even close to being that flexible anymore, especially taking off the entire summer...no way.

I work a split shift and always have ever since they were babies. I work before they get up, some hours during school and after they go to bed. It's very hard on me, but it works for our family.

In the summertime I can't afford full day camp, so each and every year we struggle through it the best we can. I try to keep them busy with crafts in a basement room, movies, games and playing in the backyard. They are old enough to make their own lunch now, so that really helps.

Unfortunately I do dread the summer. It's much easier for me personally when we have a set schedule.

I work, they play - sm -

I do try to arrange it so at least once a week we go out and do something, though sometimes that is easier said than done. They do art camp and drama camp which takes up 2 weeks in all and I work on the road then as it is too far to drive home from, just go hang out at the library and work there for the day. I plan to be a bit more diligent this year and try to get up by 6 in the morning (instead of sleeping until 8 or 9) so I can have my work out of the way early enough so we have more freedom during the day to do stuff if we want to. Last summer barely had a chance to breath let alone go anywhere. But no compnnies will not give you the summer off, though they will if you want to but don't expect to have a job in September because it will be long gone. I used to cut back at another job in the summer but I am no longer with them (out of business) and my present job I don't think would allow me to halve my work on a temporary basis so I can have some fun, if I went that route it would be a permanent thing and I do not want that.

Is There Anyone Out There Who Signed Up For Supplemental Insurance Through Colonial Last Summer
Jan 03, 2013

I called them today and I am still insured with them.  So, unless this is an error on the person I talked to, my next paycheck will have deductions for that insurance in addition to the deductions for the new 2013 Nuance insurances which are through other vendors. Does anyone know about this?  Our policies with Colonial should have been cancelled by Nuance. ...

Is It Common To Have A Limited Amount Of Work During The Summer Season?
Aug 05, 2012

I'm curious if this is throughout a lot of MT companies where the summer seasons are the slowest in terms of receiving work. I used to have an abundunt amount of doctors to transcribe for across multiple accounts, but now all of a sudden that has changed, and I am almost always out of work and I no longer transcribe for what I'm estimating as half to 3/4 of the list of docs. Is this something normal? Do doctors get together and take a 3-month hiatus at once, or something...? I'm p ...

After years of thinking about going back to school and then talking myself out of it because I didn't want to face college again at age 40, I decided I need more job security, better pay and growth potential.  So I filled out the financial aid forms, enrolled in a couple of classes for the summer, and here I go.  I'm a little nervous actually.  Been a loooooonnng while since I sat in a classroom, took notes, and took exams.  My retention isn't wh ...

Suggested Summer Reading For MTs - - Regarding 'how The World Turns Today/globalization And How
Jun 19, 2010

I left my employer of TEN YEARS, the subject of this particular forum, on April 27 after months of dealing with being in what felt like "a constant state of shock" -- while I watched my income plummet, my work pool grow from 2 basic primary hospitals and one seconday to about 25 different hospitals and clinics; it was to the point where I never felt like I knew what I was doing.  I was always working in a "different state/city/local region" where all the adjunctive medical facilit ...

USING THE BREAK FUNCTION
Nov 10, 2009

Have you ever used the break function simply because you had a dictator that was so horrible that you got frustrated and sent it back?  I know that we are not supposed to do this and that MQ supposedly keeps track of how many breaks we use but I have to admit I have done this no occasion.  I had a report so bad a couple of weeks ago which was over 1000 seconds long and an ESL doctor, not to mention scratchy sound, etc.  About halfway through this thing I had already spent nearly 2 ...

Are We No Longer Getting Break Pay?
Aug 17, 2012

I noticed today that the break pay section of the timesheet was gone today and when I clocked off a minute ago after working for 7 hours that in the "break" box, it said 0.00, when usually it would be 0.33.  Anyone know?  I know it's not a lot of money, but I usually get about 3 hours per pay period and about $30.  I would hate to lose that, cause every dollar counts. ...

Just Sick Of It - Give Me A Break!
Sep 15, 2010

I hate it when "supposedly" the platform is not functioning properly or their system is "down" because I am making way too many lines for your (MTSO) taste. Then, it is finally "fixed" and you give me the worst and oldest dictations available.  Who exactly are you kidding?  Is this supposed to slow me down so I don't get that many lines.  Give me a break - I know this trick, been an MT way too long.  Just had to vent - Please do not try to convince me this is in my imagi ...

Unpaid 30 Minute Break And...
Jul 22, 2013

I don't mind having an unpaid 30-minute break, but the thing that bothers me about some of these companies is the fact that it is tiring sitting at a computer for 8 hours and getting only a 30 minute break.  If I want two more 15 minute breaks those can be worked in, but then I have to add back 30 more minutes to my time! I like to at least stretch ever hour or so.  :/  ...

Registered Nurse Wants To Break Into MT Field

S/l Bronto Was Used To Break These Stones Up, I.e., Gallstones
Aug 12, 2010

I've got almost the exact same word question as someone below, not sure if we're from the same company or if this is just a wild coincidence, but I thought I'd try again for responses.   This is in a cholecystectomy:   The gallbladder was then removed from the bed of the liver and placed into an EndoCatch bag and retrieved through the subxiphoid incision. This had to be enlarged somewhat due to the large nature of the stones. The <__(s/l bronto)_____> was ...
