Do they ever just lay people off? - North MT

Has anyone ever been laid off or do they just expect their employees to quit? No steady work here in our BOB since October, worse since Christmas. Even today when work started picking up I still ended up 3 hours short. I have asked for a transfer and have been denied. I was told to make up my hours on Saturdays, but last week I was short 20 hours. That makes for one long Saturday especially when there was no work on Saturday. So I filed for partial unemployment. Again. Why in the world would they just not write me a note and release me?

How sad is it that I have to beg for work, beg for them to transfer me, beg for them to route me work? They hired me to do a job and they are not providing me the work to do it. How can I be full time and have less than 20 hours a week of actual work? They are the ones at fault, not me and I will not quit.

Oh and the hours and shifts the TSM said to make up time are out of work too. So much for Saturdays.

I admire you for your tenacity and willing to fight for yourself, but can you live on 20 hours a week? I certainly cannot and am actively looking for work.

Also about the partial UE, I was of the understanding that this is for 26 weeks total and then no more. Does anybody know how this works? Is it for 26 calendar weeks or 26 weeks of full-time pay? I would be wary of collecting the UE now and then be laid off and have my payout reduced because I had taken partial. Anybody know anymore about this? Thanks.

...is that in my state (and as far as I know all of them), your unemployment amount is based on your average earnings over some period of time (a year here). So M*M can't lose: If you quit, they don't have to pay any unemployment. If you hang on with hugely decreased earnings because there's no work -- depending on how long it goes on -- you could end up eligible for a way lower weekly benefit amount, because your earnings have been so low for so long (in which case M*M pays less unemployment, if they're self-insured, or presumably has their experience rating hit at a lower charge, if they aren't). Since very few of their MTs will know about filing partial unemployment, and even fewer will consider it worth the hassle for the relatively low payout, they're in a win-win-win by starving y'all out.

And I agree with the concern about whether it's x number (depends on your state) of calendar weeks or x amount of total benefits. I don't know the answer to that one, but I've wondered it too. (I wouldn't be surprised if that varied from state to state, too.)

Full disclosure, if anyone cares: I'm not M*Modal cannon fodder (yet -- I expect my employer to outsource to M*M and sell us all on the auction block any day now, which is part of why I follow the M*Modal board closely).

Don't quote me, but I am pretty sure UE benefits run for 26 weeks, for the year. Of course, there are always extensions. You used to get 1 extension only, but that may have changed. I live in California, that's the way it is here. Can't speak for other states. I'm sure you could Google it and find that out.

I have FT benefits and my only working 20 hours a week for them is costing them more money than I make. They were the ones who offered the benefits and then decided not to provide me work. They make more money when I am working than not. Only at Mmodal is 20 hours considered FT apparently. So while the higher ups figure out how to route me work I started cleaning out closets to have a garage sale and have applied for a few second part time jobs.

It's crazy to me that people do not even know what medical transcriptionists do most of the time. When people ask me what I do and I tell them transcription, it never fails that they say "What is that?" I tell them that I type what the doctor says and they say, "What does he say?" Ooops, I accidentally posted this under a reply to something else, so here goes again. Any ex-DSG people here? After 15 years, I finally had left MQ to go to DSG, then got thrown back into MQ/MM 2 years later when they bought out DSGs medical transcription department. I left MT completely after that fiasco. I am super paranoid about sticking to 8 hours per day because I was warned that OT is not allowed unless expressly offered and only after I am off the orientation team and on the production team.
