Do people know what an MT is when you tell them? - sm

Posted: Jan 25, 2013

It's crazy to me that people do not even know what medical transcriptionists do most of the time.  When people ask me what I do and I tell them transcription, it never fails that they say "What is that?"  I tell them that I type what the doctor says and they say, "What does he say?"  It's crazy that nobody ever wonders how when they ask for medical records they get neatly typed pages from their doc instead of handwritten chicken scratch.  Even when I do explain it, they usually don't get it still and I generally am like "Okay, yea that's it."

...I let him know during one of her recent visits, as I watched him type mom's information like a pro into the system. I jokingly told him he was doing my job, and he just grinned. I really liked the guy before this. But yeah, I usually draw a blank look after I tell folks what I do.

You're a newbie aren't you! The general public thinks we're just "typists." They haven't a clue that we are expected to be fluent in medical terminology, drugs, possess college level English, grammar and punctuation skills even though those we transcribe after don't bother to articulate whether they are English speaking or not and we have to make them sound like they know what they're doing. We are professional healt industry support. Too bad we are the invisible sector that no one wants to acknowledge. Also too bad we are treated with such disrespect.

No newbie, 15 years experience - ?

I'm not a newbie, but that has nothing to do with people not knowing what our job is???

Why is that no matter what the topic is, some people have to barge in with overly exaggerated rudeness? Seems some are so unhappy with their lives, not sure why they keep posting to bring down others.

I think that some MTs who work from home lose their social abilities along the way. They are sitting behind a computer for most interaction, so they feel it is acceptable to speak/type to people however they so choose. They have forgotten simple manners or politeness to a degree. I wonder if these same people snap at people in the grocery store lines or if they choose to save their etiquette for those situations and just let loose their frustrations on people who can's slap them or something:)

Makes me often wonder if the MTSO's have forgotten - IAMT

how much knowledge we must have to accomplish our jobs and provide accurate records, what with the lousy pay and benefits currently. Certainly can't be proud of our profession any longer and certainly don't feel appreciated. Pretty sad.

The thing that frustrates me the most is when talking about MT profession and that I work at home, people automatically want to know if I can hook them up "cause they would love to work at home." Nevermind that they can't spell normal words and have no medical background, etc. They think its just easy and that anyone could do it. People have also said things like that to my dad when people ask what I do and it irritates him to no end also.

What an MT is - the only answer I have is...

...A DOORMAT!

I agree Leeby! - anybody can do it, right?

[ In Reply To ..]
I hate that worse than anything. I have had many people say, "Hook me up with a job, I can type fast." It is very irritating. I even had one lady call me many times over a few months and she got irate with me because I would not help her get a job. She would not leave me alone - I finally told her I was not going to "hook her up" and to leave me alone! Can you believe, that same woman called me some months later asking if I had changed my mind! Oh, forgot to mention, she said she watched a lot of medical shows on TV and was very versed in "doctor talk."

His ex-wife used to work as an MT from home, but never really applied herself. According to him, she started spending her time on social networks, met someone online, had an affair and they divorced. When he found out I've been working from home as a single mother since 1996, it confirmed that she was to be completely hated.

oyvey. He has complete respect for me, though, and goes out of his way to treat my kids as well as he does his own. Since he works from home, too, we help each other out when we have phone conferences and such.

No, people do not know and there is no reason they should. - Do you know what a coder is?

[ In Reply To ..]
No, people do not know. There is no reason they should. It just isn't in their range of knowledge -- they have no notion of what goes on in medicine. Most people do not ask for copies of their medical records. They have no idea there ARE MTs or anybody else in doctors offices . . . except nurses. And to them, everybody in a doctor's office is a nurse. Everybody in a hospital is a nurse or doctor . . . usually along gender lines.

I'll just about bet that your idea of a "coder" is just as far off the mark. People here are always asking what an "informaticist" is. Can you tell us what either of those do?

How about medical anthropologist. Do you know what THEY do?

If all you tell them is that you "type what the doctor says," it's your own fault that they don't understand and don't respect you. It would be more effective if you explained about medical care requiring documentation and why, that it is kept in medical records, and that physicians dictate this to you so that you can write it in correct medical language for them. There is a huge difference between that and "typing what they say."

LOL - TMI

I would LOVE to see the look on a person's face when they ask you what you do for a living! Wow, I should sit and explain medical care to them? I bet once someone asks you a question and you give an answer that conversation is over....I would be afraid to take up another couple of hours of my time asking you another question:)

People Skills For Work-at-home People

I have been at home working full time for about a year.  I have been an MT longer, but I always had kept a job outside of the home also because I like interaction with other.  I have found that I am starting to lose my people skills.  Do others have this same problem?  It is like I have forgotten how to really be able to hold a conversation with others.  This is something that really bothers me as I have always loved customer service and working with people and main ...

To All Of You QA People.
Feb 08, 2011

I know this is a little thing, but after 2 years it is a little annoying.  Why do you ask MTs to look up physician names and addresses that are not in the database and to send to QA?  You NEVER enter them into the system, not once.  I have kept a list of physician names and addresses that we frequently use that are not in the database.  I send them to QA every time, requesting that they be entered.  I wonder what your response would be if we sent it blank?  Just a l ...

Okay, four years of doing transcription and it's been four years of people calling all day to chat, wanting me to go do this and that, etc.  I've tried over and over to explain to them to not drop by because I'm WORKING! Do They Ever Just Lay People Off?
Jan 29, 2013

Has anyone ever been laid off or do they just expect their employees to quit?  No steady work here in our BOB since October, worse since Christmas.  Even today when work started picking up I still ended up 3 hours short.  I have asked for a transfer and have been denied.  I was told to make up my hours on Saturdays, but last week I was short 20 hours.  That makes for one long Saturday especially when there was no work on Saturday.  So I filed for part ...

Any Former DSG People
Jul 06, 2013

I'm just curious if any of the DSG victims who were bought out by MM are still with MM. I had quit MM (MQ at the time) years earlier to go with DSG, only to get slammed back into MQ/MM when they bought out DSG. I quit MM after 8 months of the buy-out. It was my goal from day one of the buy-out and I finally succeeded in getting out of MT completely. ...

Ooops, I accidentally posted this under a reply to something else, so here goes again. Any ex-DSG people here? After 15 years, I finally had left MQ to go to DSG, then got thrown back into MQ/MM 2 years later when they bought out DSGs medical transcription department. I left MT completely after that fiasco. I trusted no company after that mess and decided leaving MT was the smartest thing to do. Just wondering if any of you Ex-DSGers are still working for MM, and if not, what are you doing ...

Too Many People In The Pot Here

I have a TSM, who I never hear from. Wonder what she does? I have a QA lead that I hear from when I screw up, then there is another one that does quality updates, what the is that anyway and why do I care? And then there is the one that sends out daily backlogs that also mean NOTHING to me in the grand scheme of life. Seems maybe we could trim the fat if we held maybe 2 people accountable to do their stinking jobs instead of 4. Not to mention the ones in the even higher positions that I ha ...

Why Are Some QA People So Snippy To Everyone?
Jan 26, 2010

Some, not all, QA people need to realize our frustrations are just as great as theirs.  That's why the report is sent to QA in the first place!!  I realize they may tell the same MTs the same things over and over again, but they should keep in mind that is not always the case, and people do have feelings and manners.  Some QA people develop such attitudes that they really should consider another line of business.  If you send me e mails that are so generalized that ...
