Okay, four years of doing transcription and it's been four years of people calling all day to chat, wanting me to go do this and that, etc. I've tried over and over to explain to them to not drop by because I'm WORKING! Have any of you had to get down right rude to make people understand? Husband also doesn't seem to get it since he mentions "you're at home all day." Ugh.

I've had that problem, so now I don't answer the phone and I don't answer the door. If they get mad, then that's too bad. If they say "why didn't you answer the phone/door, I know you are home because you are working," tell them you are going to start "dropping in" while they are working and start chatting and asking them to do things and see what they say. As for your husband, I have no advice because I don't have a significant other at the moment. Hope this helps. :)

Show hubby paycheck and tell him this could be even more if he would just leave you alone when you are working.

over your desk for your husband. Don't answer the phone during working hours; change your message to say, not available, busy working until they get the idea. If someone comes to your door, chat briefly at the door but do not let that person in. Explain kindly once to each person that, nice as it would be, you don't get paid for chatting with friends. Easy-peasy. Really. :)

Don't answer the phone (unless you know it's someone who respects the boundary of you're working).

Where do you work? Do you have your own office or share living space with the family?

It's up to YOU to enforce the boundary by not engaging people. They get the message eventually.

DH still doesn't get it! Why can't I do all the house work, errands, shopping and put in 35-40 hours a week in here!! I'm home "You aren't that busy"!!! You are not alone.... Then when he does help I get this passive aggressive attitude!! Going back to any office sounds good about now...

Boy was that a surprise to him to find nothing on the stove. Just a quick explanation - "I worked right up until 5, was swamped, didn't get to it. Maybe two nights a week you can pick something up or cook after work." Same for household chores. Didn't ask for help but offered a list of chores that he could choose from.

As for people calling, ditto what everyone else said. If you need an excuse, tell them you get paid to do STAT ER reports and if you're not online, you'll be fired. One who was persistent is no longer a friend. She didn't like it when I asked her if she calls her daughter's cell phone or drops in where she works. Her daughter is a teacher.

If that hubby were mine, he'd have exactly 24 hrs - to adjust his attitude, or be shown the door. n-m

From one fellow MT to another, I'm so sorry you're going through that. You might need to sit down with him and go over what is to be expected. My husband does all the grocery shopping and cooking and won't allow the kids to bother me while working. He just "gets it" and has for all the years I've been doing this (15 years). Your husband must understand you are working and work out some schedule as your partner, or you will start to resent him.

For years, I have felt the need to prove to my in-laws that I do have a job, but some of them have admitted they wish they could work at home so never ask me about work. I'm more vocal about it now at parties instead of acting like I don't work. My sister and her husband are really the only ones who ask me about my job and that's about it. I'm over it. I bring in a good paycheck and absolutely love my career; it has been very good to me. My husband is so proud of me and always asks how my day went, if I had bad dictators, made a good line count, etc. I would not be happy with him if he didn't support my work like I do his. It needs to be equal.

Good luck with getting him on the same page but believe you can do it. It's all in what you allow him to do and to respect your job. He will when you put your foot down and close the door. :)

When you answer the door or a personal phone call, you are not working. So, why would they believe you have a job? For the past four years, every social interaction when you should be working is initiated by someone other than you? Being "downright rude to make people understand" is unnecessary, because only you can choose your priorities.

If your friends get upset just tell them you love them and value their friendship, but you truly have a real job and you must perform that job during specific hours, just as if you were in an office. They will either finally get a clue or they will get upset and get over it later, but either way - you have to do something. As for the phone, stop answering it.

you didn't answer the door or the phone. You have work ethics BECAUSE you need the paycheck. The setting is irrelevant. It matters not a whit if you work where you boss is eyeballing or your IM'ing you or emailing you. You have a BOSS to answer to. A boss who doesn't understand your unwillingness to behave in an ethical manner if you answer the door or the phone, just like if s/he were standing in front of you. It is your responsibility to set limitations with others. How you do that is your choice :)

The simple answer is, do not answer the phone. If you are concerned you may miss an emergent call, get caller ID. And if someone comes to the door to visit you simply say, I would love to visit but I am working right now. Let's set an appointment up so we can chat another time. You have to toughen up or they will continue to do so and if you aren't typing, you aren't making money.

Some people just don't get it. My husband fortunately is an MT as well so we BOTH deal with it together. The way we fixed our interruptions is changing out shift to 10pm to 6am that way everyone else is asleep while we are working and our family and friends do not DARE to call us before 3pm because they know we are sleeping lol.

It's crazy to me that people do not even know what medical transcriptionists do most of the time. When people ask me what I do and I tell them transcription, it never fails that they say "What is that?" I tell them that I type what the doctor says and they say, "What does he say?" Ooops, I accidentally posted this under a reply to something else, so here goes again. Any ex-DSG people here? After 15 years, I finally had left MQ to go to DSG, then got thrown back into MQ/MM 2 years later when they bought out DSGs medical transcription department. I left MT completely after that fiasco.
