How can we raise awareness? - Rebel
Posted: Aug 13, 2014
I'm pretty sure the average American does not know that their supposedly private health information is being sent over to India. How can this not be a HIPAA violation? I don't think most doctors realize either that their dictation is being done over there. I've been trying to think of ways to increase this awareness and create a BACKLASH!!! I'm sure this has been discussed before. I'm sure we have contacted our politicians. Just an idea.... what if we all banded together to contact one certain media outlet or one certain reporter at a media outlet at NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC, etc. The power of the media is pretty strong these days. I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but I'm just putting it out there. If anyone has a better idea, I'll certainly help or participate if I can. I'm no longer going to accept any on-line jobs. I'm working for my school cafeteria because it pays $9.50/h and that is a lot more than what I'm making being an MT after 30 years.

The companies in India are required to be HIPAA compliant if they contract with a US MTSO. The doctors realize where their dictation is going, the docs I work for chose to send it there to save money. I know for a fact that the vendor is HIPAA compliant, they actually have more stringent controls in place than a lot of US companies. Your entire chart does not get sent, by the way, just a voice file for transcription, a patient name, MRN and date of service. Everything is encrypted, outgoing and incoming. No news agency will run your story unless you can support it with facts. Do some research first, please.

I do not see where you get 'negativity' out of facts, Bummer. - She is correct. sm

My suggestion is to do some research first, and keep on top of it. What if you were out there lobbying and news personnel, congressmen, or anyone you approach about it, start throwing those same facts at you? Is that all you got? wow, you're negative...bummer.
It's not about sending out letters. At some point you're going to have to sell it, and you'll get nowhere putting people down if/when you can't address the facts of your own cause and what is going on out there.
Not saying don't or you can't...just suggesting you know what you're talking about in order to make a difference.

This has been going on for years now. People know and the doctors know; it's just not something they dwell on because most are busy enough dealing with the everyday issues of life.
If you're someone that does this job for a living everyday then of course you'll think about it and want to take some kind of action, but most people don't sit around and think about who's typing their medical records on a daily basis. They may hear about it and think it's a shame, but then that's pretty much the end of it.
Just being logical that's all.

While I applaud your desire to educate others, I have to say that I've tried and, in all honesty, not many people were concerned. There is a truly paralyzing element of complacency in this country and I wish getting this out into the media would make a difference, I'm just not sure it would. I would, however, do all I can to participate with any suggestions. Much luck to you.

It will all be point and click with no dictation very soon. And I'm sure people really do not care that much about this. I'm sure they are much more worried about feeding their families with the cost of food going up.
Mainstream media is no good - it's all rigged - & blind to everything but money.

Customer service, computer techs, etc., there's so much offshoring in the world now - all to save money - we're practically an all-in-one world. It's not just our sector which is a drop in a bucket when you back up and see the whole picture.

Why you told her to give it a rest does not make sense - unless you are addressing the original poster and tagged the wrong post.

Only a small portion by editors. I think that's why MTSOs are exploring other options such as building on their software, offering coding services and other types of transcription besides medical. Nobody wants to hear it and I agree it can be depressing, but its true.
As far as medical records being done overseas, I agree with L&L - people got bigger fish to fry just trying to live.

I think most doctors do, but I know damn well most patients don't. The American Transcription Association has an article (media ready) on the subject -- Healthcare's Dirty Little Secret. I'd love to be a member again, but I digress. Here's the link.
Yes, here we go again - Perhaps you can do it yourself???

If you feel so strongly about this, why do you need to wait for others to join so they can figure it out and do the work for you?
Just contact the news media and see what they tell you: 1, that you need to do more research and, 2, that your beliefs about this are incorrect.
The truth is that you are less concerned about any HIPAA violation than you are about keeping your old job the same as it was so that you don't have to exert yourself learning anything new.
India is the least of MT's problems. They are going to be wiped out by front-end SR, too.

Think about this: If you have a Facebook account, what they know about you is scary, and they sell your information to advertisers. Hacking and ID theft are pretty common. If you shop at Amazon.com, they know who you are and all of your personal preferences. Online banking and bill paying, e-mail newsletters, our lives are out there every time we go on line. Identify theft happens, but much of it takes place in the United States. Having someone in India do your transcription is probably the least of your worries if you are trying to keep your personal information safe.

and in regards to Facebook...I just learned last night that Facebook is "forcing" their members to download an app as Facebook Messenger, in order to message anybody included in your contacts on Facebook. You MUST download this app or you will not be able to message anyone on f/b any longer. Once downloaded onto whatever device you are using, f/b then has access to everything within your phone or computer, and I mean Everything! they even have access to your camera and video equipment and it has been stated that they can photograph you in your own home and use that for their advantages, whatever that may be. They have access to ALL of your other accounts, bank, purchases, everything. They have the ability to alter and edit any of your texts messages, emails, etc. Check it out on line if you do not believe me. There is a huge lawsuit beginning to form against f/b just because of this!!! I uninstalled the app last night when I found out about it, and there is a way around not being able to see your messages on f/b any longer, and you still can message someone and receive messages from others if you know how. This is a cautionary tale... everybody needs to know about what is taking place.

The industry is morphing. Screaming FOUL and thinking it's going to make a difference is a waste of breath.
Industries change. Some die. Some go overseas. It's the MT industry now. Not a lot can be done about it and when something could have been done was about 20 years ago. AAMT sold us out when TPTB realized there was a goldmine in India and started sending their attention there.

Regarding Asking For A Raise... Jan 02, 2012So I've been working for a fantastic transciption company for over a year now. My turnaround times are always excellent (they acknowledge this to us in weekly emails), and I haven't had any complaints about my work. I'm a certified MT with four years experience, and I'm thinking about asking for a raise. They hired me at $0.08 per line. What should I ask for? And is it okay to ask after 15 months? How Much Raise To Ask For? Dec 02, 2012After being with my company for a year, I would like to ask for a raise (haha). How much would you ask for and hopefully receive? 1/4 cent? 1/2 cent? A full cent?
I think I do excellent work. I monitor the accounts even on the weekends and jump on when it's getting close to being out of turnaround, unasked. My supervisor does not have to worry about these accounts as I have proven time and again that I am "on it". Taking some stress away from her deems to be a legitimate reason ...

I am sure some are getting an increase, but I would bet it's more likely to be 5% or less.
