Has anybody else had to deal with this? - Aggravated

Posted: Aug 06, 2013

A little over a month ago my old PC finally crashed after 10 good years.  I replaced it and had to put antivirus on it (of course).  I ended up taking my son to the ER and can't afford insurance, so I ended up paying out of pocket for his antibiotics.  (Sad that the antibiotics cost less than a month of insurance for the two of us.)  My antivirus expires the day before I get my check.  Are there any safe alternatives for one day until I get paid?

I use AVG - it's free! - nm

I have used Avast for many years and really like it -- they have a 30-day "full protection," for free and if you don't opt for that, then it just rolls to the free version. I also use SpyBot Search and Destroy and IObit System Care on my computer as well as Malwarebytes -- all of these programs are free and work great. One thing though with both SpyBot and Malwarebytes, you need to check for updates before you run the programs. Hope this helps.

Hey, don't pay for anti-virus! sm - El Kid

Hey, you don't have to pay for that. Get some of great free ones, like most do! Avast, AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials, to name a few. Great protection, etc.

Don't shell out your hard earned bucks when you don't have to. Those 3 above will take take care of all of your needs, including anti-virus, malware, spyware, etc., and all of them are free!

Please, don't pay for anti-virus when the free ones give you all the protection that you need!

Thanks. Are there.... - sm - Aggravated

...any that don't slow down programs while you're working. I had previously used Norton, AVG, and Avast on my old computer. I had to get a new antivirus because my programs kept freezing up when I was trying to work, especially during scans. I thought it was just that my old computer was worn out. I did a clean install of every program on the new computer and with each of the antivirus programs I had the same problem of the programs not running correctly. I tried pausing the scans to finish reports and then let the scan run. I even changed my scan schedules to times when I would take a break. The biggest issue I have had is when I am typing on MS Word sometimes the words are not showing up for several seconds even with a scan not running. There have been times that the text did not show up at all and I would have to type the same sentence twice. Occasionally Word will just close by itself while a scan is running. Firefox and Chrome freeze up during scans as well. The only thing that worked to keep the programs from freezing is a trick that my cousin showed me from one of her computer classes. Turn off the antivirus temporarily while working. Obviously I can't leave my antivirus off. I am currently using Vipre and have not had any issues whatsoever.

I really do appreciate the suggestions.

Use this - Steve

This is a friend of mine's help page, and it saved me several times. The anti-virus emergency programs work great (got rid of conduit virus for me).
You definitely need to know how to reboot your computer to an earlier time from safe mode if you have a serious virus problem. Interrupt the reboot with F8 to get into safe mode - that's a trick I didn't know - that works around the virus taking over.

Also, if worse comes to worse, refurbished PC's are available very cheaply on Amazon. I got my latest for less than $100; it has 20 gigs and 2 gig RAM, a Dell.

It could also be going slow because of background - programs running. Use

[ In Reply To ..]
Ccleaner, it allows you to choose which programs to start on startup and also which ones to turn off running in the background. I had trouble with Malwarebytes messing up my computer and it didn't uninstall properly causing more problems and I'll never use that again. With AVG free, Ccleaner and Spybot you'll be fine.

I will check those out. - Aggravated

I really do appreciate everyone's input. I'm not sure that the issues I am having were completely understood.

The issues I am having are also happening on a brand new computer right out of the box. I have stopped all programs that were not necessary to run the PC, my file players, and MS Word. I still had the same problem as long as the antivirus was enabled, even when it was not actively running a scan. I have done a factory reset on the new computer with clean installs from new licenses of all my programs. No files were transferred from the old computer to the new.

Antivirus programs -- how many are you running? - nn

Just a question, but I have been told by tech people that having more than one antivirus program on your computer is a big "no-no;" i.e., having both AVG and Avast installed for example. It creates conflicts that may be slowing your computer down. Only have one antivirus program installed on your computer at a time :)

Only one. - Aggravated

I had to do a factory reset to get rid of all traces of the old antivirus programs.

Microsoft has a free one. Good luck. :)

Microsoft Security Essentials - free free free

also doesn't use up a lot of juice and I have had no issues with viruses since installing it on all our computers. I don't know how the other guys compete with free.

What Is The Deal With VR?
Jun 27, 2012

Okay, guess I will show how dumb I am.  I am an MT in a in-house office for a urologist. he dictates, I listen and transcribe. i get on here and read everyone fussing about VR. I get that VR is voice recognition...but what is your job? If you are an MT, you have VR, I realize it gets it wrong sometimes but what do you do? Read it to make sure VR gets it right and then make the changes?  Just wondering.  Any reply appreciated. Thanks! ...

So What's The Deal With
Oct 27, 2013

A couple of days ago I took my mom to the ER because of sudden back pain.  We live in a town of ~20,000 and have a 100-bed hospital with a fully staffed ER.  We were the ONLY ones in the waiting room.  It took 1-1/2 hours to be seen by a triage nurse, 1 hour to be escorted to an ER room, 1 hour to be seen by a nurse (never seen by an MD), and 2 hours for a different nurse to wander distractedly into the room with discharge/followup instructions.  There were at least 20 employ ...

Help! I'm Stumped On How To Deal With This...
Oct 24, 2009

Urinalysis has been obtained today suggesting 50 to 100 WBCs, RBCs, many bacteria, with a WBC of 6.9, hemoglobin 14.3, positive nitrites and moderate leukoesterase in his urine. First, I cannot find leukoesterase in any dictionary and believe he must mean leukocyte esterase.  Can I change it?  Should I flag it if I do or is it one of those things that is obvious enough that it doesn't need to be flagged.  Second, should I punctuate it differently?  I mean the WBC and he ...

What IS The Deal With The Teamwork Graphic
Sep 29, 2013

Maybe this is just my OCD tendencies speaking, but it really irritates me how the blue bar and the green bar do not line up. For example, if I am scheduled to work until 11, then I clock out at 10:30 for a break, the green bar for "Actuals" is already showing way past the end of the blue bar for "Plan." To whoever wrote the code behind the web page, how hard could it possibly have been to program the graphics so that they line up? It's really no big deal in actuality, but for some ...
